Topic Tuesday // Alcohol // Tuesday 23rd November, 7:00- 8:30PM AEDT

Hi SANE Community,

This fortnight we will be having a discussion about alcohol with our special guest Hello Sunday Morning

Why Alcohol?

We are noticing here on the SANE forums there is a continuing theme around alcohol use, with many of our valued members expressing their concern around their use of alcohol as well as a desire to perhaps cut down or stop completely, but not knowing how to do that.

This week we have partnered with our friends at Hello Sunday morning to discuss strategies to cut down and manage alcohol use in a hope to have a better understanding of our relationship with alcohol and how to be the one in control, rather than letting alcohol control us.

Who is Hello Sunday Morning?

Hello Sunday Morning is a health service with an aim to “change the world’s relationship with alcohol, One Sunday at a time!” 1 in 20 Australians see drinking as a problem and that’s why Hello Sunday Morning is supporting people through the development of their ‘daybreak app’ who want to abstain, cut back or establish a better relationship with alcohol.

This will be an open discussion with a representative of the Hello Sunday Morning team so our users can ask questions and hopefully find some support if they are looking to change their relationship with alcohol. As always, peer support workers will be in the background to share their experience and ensure everyone is safe and supported. This is a space for us all to share and learn from each other, please remember to be respectful, safe and anonymous.

Please join us here on Tuesday the 23rd of November 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEST to follow this conversation.

Hi @HenryX
It sounds as though you have a solution that works for you - It is great that you can drink with friends once a month and abstain the rest of the time.

My family experience was father in military relatively heavy drinker most of life, mother also till total abstinence for most of remainder of life, probably similar reasons to my own - too many possible problems. I am certainly at a level between cautious and fearful of possible consequences for me. Used to work as waiter in pubs when younger so often saw consequences of over indulgence

@HenryX
Yes - Alcohol can have a huge impact on peoples lives - and I imagine working as a waiter in pubs in your younger days would have given you perspective of the issues that over indulgence can bring

@Paperdaisy

Christmas and the new year can be a challenging time for many people who already have or are wanting to change their relationship with alcohol. Some tips coming into the silly season include:

  • Have a schedule and plan.
  • Make sure you have time for self-care.

  • Have some delicious alcohol-free drinks available at home.

  • Remind friends and family of your goals for them to support you.

There are some helpful tips in this blog article from Hello Sunday Morning about some strategies to use at Christmas time.

Don't want to monopolise the conversation but also see evidence in my own children, mid-life of a keeness for alcohol that could cause problems. Possibly genetic or socialised influences, though even with what I have already said, I would find it difficult to offer an idea of which may be dominant.

@HenryX Growing up I also witnessed both my parents experencing addiction issues. This was a motivation to choose my own recovery journey once I too began using substances to deal with my feelings. I am very grateful for this now.

@Paperdaisy

We are very excited to continue our day to day support of our community and are building new tools and features which also focus on co-occurring conditions. Research indicates to us that over 50% of people have co-occurring issues, for example alcohol addiction and mental health. Keep an eye on our website for the latest developments .
