Diabetes and mental health

Diabetes and mental health

Mental illness is enough to cope with on its own,

so being told you have diabetes as well can feel overwhelming at first.

It’s important to remember, then, that there are things you can do yourself to manage the condition well, and that there are trained people who can help you do this – for example, by recommending eating and lifestyle changes.

hello everyone

I have diabetes 2 which a new doctor said out of the blue " do you know you have Diabetes "

Getting used to a diagnosis of diabetes can take a while, and just as there is stigma around mental illness, so there can be stigma around Type 2 Diabetes.
You may feel that some people think it’s your fault that you developed diabetes, that it was caused by eating too much and not exercising. However, diabetes is more common among people living with a mental illness.

Antipsychotic medications can lead to major weight gain, for example, while Depression and Anxiety can make it more difficult to exercise regularly and eat healthily because of the effects on motivation.
It is important for you, your family and friends to find out what you can about diabetes, to understand what support is available, and what you can do to help yourself.

love to hear from members who have diabetes

thank you @Dimity yes, i can't believe in a place like Australia people are allowed to have broken bones for so long without treatment. the pain she is in is really awful, they are giving her very little pain meds.

im ok, im struggling to keep my partners mood up, im monitoring my sleeping and trying to keep myself from having another breakdown.

Hugs @Jacques . I hope your partner gets her surgery without further delay. 2 of my family have had untreated broken bones too, it seems very wrong.

Re: Diabetes and mental health

All the very best for your test results on Friday @Shaz51 🙂🌺💜

I hope Mr Shaz can get some help from his team regarding the bad dreams, too 💜🌺

All the best with the sleep study; feel free to tag if there’s any questions that you can’t find the answers for - I still pretty much recall the setups and monitoring, as well as the technical equipment used for sleep studies (have been out of the business for a while, but should be able to help if you need🙌🏻☺️).
take care and I hope your day goes well! 🌺💜🙂

Hi @Shaz51 I hope everything went OK with getting your results and seeing the dietician.

Hello @Dimity

Most of the results are high

But the doctor is happy as the insulin injections has brought my total sugar levels down and it has not affected the kidney

Kidney level is stable at 19 %

Re: Diabetes and mental health

Hi @Shaz51

Sugars down - good

Kidney function stable - good

Other measures high - not so good

Did the dietician have any useful advice? I find the check on muscle/fat/bone percentage helpful.

Re: Diabetes and mental health

Hello @Shaz51 here is my diabetic pancake recipe

INGREDIENTS

* 1 cup almond flour (low carb)

* 1 teaspoon baking powder

* 1 capful vanilla essence

* 1 tablespoon monkfruit sugar (diabetic friendly sugar)

* Enough almond milk or water to make a paste

* 1 egg (I'm now looking into using linseed meal instead of an egg as a binder as I have thyroid issues)

* 1 tablespoon coconut oil

METHOD

I just put everything into a large pyrex glass jug and mix until there are no lumps and let it stand for several minutes.

Just pour the required amount into a frypan and flip them when each side is done

I pour over Lankanto brand maple flavoured syrup which won't spike sugar levels in diabetics. You can buy from any supermarket or Amazon. Its vegan and gluten free so no animal byproducts like glycerine from animals

Can serve with frozen raspberries or blueberries with nuts if you like that option for added crunch
