Topic Tuesday // Art & Creativity // Tues 9th November, 7:00-8:30PM AEDT

Hi SANE Community,

This fortnight we will be having a discussion about art and creativity with our peer support worker, @Former-Member ! 🎨

Why Art & Creativity?

The role of art in our lives is often questioned because at the surface it can appear to be a frivolous and meaningless activity. However (while that may be true for some!), art can also encourage us to look beyond survival and lead us to create for the sake of expression and meaning- connecting us with others.

Art can communicate information, legitimise our thoughts and emotions, make a social statement, ground us and be enjoyed for aesthetic beauty. Studies have even shown that taking part in creative art activities can have a positive effect on our mental health and wellbeing.

This will be an open discussion around our motivations for engaging creatively, our experiences with art, and how we can apply it in our lives to foster better wellbeing and relationships. Remember, you don’t have to think of yourself as a creative person, or be good at art, to benefit from art and creativity. Nor do you have to know much about art to join this conversation! This is a space for us all to share and learn from each other. 😊

Please join us here on Tuesday the 9th of November 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEST to follow this conversation.

@BPDSurvivor same I am finding that within myself, for me I think its because I've spent so long looking after others that i have to justify doing art for myself rather than just go do it. E.g. woohoo kids are at school I'll write/draw up that dream I had. Walk in door and see floor needs vacuuming, dishes need doing, blah blah blah. Thought to self as filling sink I'll do it later and later never happens.

Refugee of the heart, I love that @Former-Member

I love that you jotted it down, a constant evolving work in progress.

I can't exercise at the moment due to surgery so I'm saying out loud to you all that in my lunch break as an alternative I will spend 15 minutes focusing on my art...this will serve many purposes. 15 minutes will fly bit it will chip away and give me some time out of my own head, much needed "therapy" at present

What do you know about art therapy? Do you have any experiences with art therapy?

I have been seeing an art therapist for two years as an NDIS support. Art Therapy is definitely a lot more diverse than what you see on tv. Art therapy is way more than just painting/colouring.

Art Therapy for me is kind of like a way of processing the trauma held in my body by using my body. One time, for example, I made a piece of clay and when asked what I was making I didn’t know. I then realised it kind of looked like a baby. My Art Therapist then supported me to talk to the clay like it was me when I was little.

This really allowed me to be compassionate to myself like never before. I still keep ‘the baby’ in my bedside drawer and sometimes just get it out to hold it and look after it. So my point is, Art therapy can include all sorts of things!

Have any of you every tried Art Therapy or would like to give it a go?

Sounds great @nony ! For us, it sonds like we just have to do it.

As for art therapy, I've engaged in DBT art therapy. It was interesting, but not sure i'd do it again. Sometimes, art stresses me out when it doesn't turn out the way i envisaged.
