Fear

Fear

Last fortnight we spoke about anger. We used the emotion wheel to help us explore how we feel anger, spoke about how anger shows up in our lives, and some of the ways that we cope when anger surfaces.

This fortnight, we are continuing the discussion of emotions by exploring our next emotion; fear. This is the orange section of the wheel:

Fear has an important role to play in keeping us safe and well. It’s an emotion that brings a strong bodily reaction and helps us to navigate many different situations in our lives. When we think about fear, ways we might describe the feeling of fear include “I feel scared”, “I feel anxious”, “I am overwhelmed” “I feel stressed” “I feel threatened” .

It’s our body’s inbuilt emotional barometer of how safe we feel.

Feeling fear

This emotion might be felt in different ways to other emotions, such as anger, and can impact many different systems in our body. Fear also might be associated with different behaviours. For example: when we feel fear, our body undergoes stress and we might feel our heart rate increase, our breathing change, or other bodily changes:

When we can identify how fear shows up for us, and some of the signs we might be experiencing fear, we can take steps to manage the emotion and our responses.

This discussion will talk about themes such as fear and stress, and topics that could be upsetting or triggering for those reading along. There are questions we have planned ahead of time to keep this conversation safe and constructive, but if at any time you feel distressed, you are welcome to reach out to our peer support or counselling services for additional support.

Thank you all for the courage and vulnerability to share those feelings. I tend to feel anxious, insecure, weak and exposed when I am experiencing fear too.

Re: Fear

Sorry but not sure I understand the question @cloudcore -

where in our body do we feel fear?

Do we give an example of a time when we feared of something???

not sure

Re: Fear

Hi @BlueBay , yes the question is referring to times or situations in your life when you have experienced or responded with fear.

For me, I have lived with anxiety for many years and so I have to sat in a space of fear often. Specifically, fear can show up for me when I feel like my relationships, personal or professional, are changing or breaking down.

What about for you?

Re: Fear

Fear of having a medical emergency or dying in my bed at night. No one will know as I am totally alone and isolated. Anyhow, that's life, just got to accept my fate.

Re: Fear

im not sure that there is any part of my life where there isnt fear. im afraid of the things i see and feel and the memories that i have of the past which constantly come into mind. im always anxious in relationships and social situations. shows up in no confidencein self or anything i have to do and in my avoidance and procrastination of things.

Question 2:

How does fear show up in your life?

For me, fear can show up as frustration, avoidance, anxiety, rapid speech, racing heart, a feeling as though blood has drained from my body head-down.

So when this happens, I practise B-R-E-A-T-H-I-N-G to slow things down. It's taken me many years to even contemplate using this technique. Now, it's about pracitising it when I'm well so that it works when i'm not well.
