The end of my career, of life as I need it

The end of my career, of life as I need it

Hello,

I've come for support (and comfort) from others who lost what they worked & thought they'd lived for. I worked, hard and with many sacrifices, for the career I had, and I'm not saying people don't work hard, I just worked hard on my own career. And ahoet years after I got to one of my major milestones (not the first one) I ever dreamed to strive for, I got ill, and eventually lost my job and went into 'nothingness'. Even years after, I miss it, I miss my job, I miss the people I worked with, I miss the job I did. This job was my life. It's what I studied for, it's what I put endless (and happy) hours into and I just loved my job. I really loved my job. I really loved my career. I loved the projects I did, my workmates and clients, my time in or out of the office, I just loved my job. And I lost it. And I lost it for a reason, because my brain doesn't work how it used to anymore. It's some years ago now, but it's still the same jearning for a job and matesship and passion I lived for since my teens. Even if it seems completely self indulgent, I say it here, I will never be able to use my (formerly) brilliant mind to work at these (for me) amazing developments again and will never be able to connect to the multitude of brilliant minds again, because I can't sustain and control my mind and it makes me so entirely sad because this was such an integral part of myself. I don't think it's only the status etc that I miss but it's me, I breathed and lived this job, yes I had and have value outside my career but it's like a racehorses who lost both legs and who can't even be in the stable or train with the other race horses. I just REALLY miss my job 😞

Is there anyone else out there who just misses their job, not just for money in their pocket, but because that's an integral part of who they are?

Hey @BlueBay,

I've also had experiences leaving workplaces and jobs I loved when it wasn't my choice. It's tough, and that's ok. It's also ok, and important, to let yourself feel all of that and to let it out.

In the experiences I've had, what I didn't realise when I lost the jobs I loved (which, at the time, felt pretty devastating) is that there was something really cool waiting for me a little way down the track. Maybe there'll be something waiting around the corner for you too. I hope so. ❤️

I don't know about that @TideisTurning something out there waiting for me - i really don't know anymore. losing the last job was very devastating. it really hurt. i have not heard from my friend who works there, not even to see how i am. some friend she is!!

for me i am grieving the loss of - a job, money, friendships, chatting to customers, a direction in life, something to do on some days, getting dressed up and make up on. Now there is nothing, i am home everyday. it's the same crap just a different day.

sorry, i am feeling really low today, i do appreciate your response.

I know how you feel, I have been stood down from my job at Sydney Airport in June, probably no work until December ! Not good stuck here at home day after day, not good for mental health.

Hi @petrichor
I can understand your pain in this. I am not someone who has lost a job but I have certainly made decisions that have lead to me being long term unemployed and this has impacted my mental health. I'm a single mum and carer and for one reason or another haven't been able to find employment. I miss my old career, the people especially and lucky enough to still be in contact with some of them. I am a person who loves to work and have experienced some regret in leaving my job. But I know at the time it was the best decision I could have made and have learnt to reflect on the broader perspective that I am not just my job or what I did for a career but so much more (ie a mother, a carer, a friend) and these are my jobs now. And yes the money coming in is a pittance but on the up side I have plenty of time. I know no matter what life changes and shifts and it will continue to. Is there another job you could do that would be less demanding mentally but still allow you to have the social aspects? Anyway I hope this has been helpful.
