The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hello @NatureLover @Oaktree I hope you're going well. I have the impression we're all hoping to move forward but finding it a bit hard at the moment.

Me, I'm bogged down at the moment. My place is a mess. My offsite storage is no longer viable and that stuff is practically stranded. And I'm tired of living alone. I've slid into depression and I need to find the reset button.

I'd like to think I can be reinspired.

@Oaktree on another thread you said you'd like to reimagine your bedroom as a sanctuary. Do you have a vision @NatureLover ? I don't at the moment but I'd like to find a home for more of my books.

Oh @TAB I'm so glad you've found a house. Is the work in WA or SA? Hope it helps set you up, you'll be needing new stuff.

@Dimity I find papers hard to deal with, so well done on culling those files 🙂

So sorry to hear all of this 🫂

Re finding the reset button, can you walk through your house with a notepad and pen, and write down what you would take with you if you had to leave the house with an hour's notice, like with a bushfire approaching or something? Then you can ignore that stuff, and work on the rest? Please ignore if not helpful. I haven't actually done this myself but I think of it a lot, and of what I would keep.

Luckily @Dimity @Oaktree my bedroom is already my sanctuary and rarely gets messy as I need it to stay functional, especially the bed as I spend a lot of time lying down. A vision...umm...maybe to get rid of the narrow hazardous pathways through the lounge-room and kitchen. I accept them as normal but I would like to see them as abnormal.

Hi @NatureLover @Dimity @TAB @Appleblossom @Former-Member

My bedroom needs a lot of work! There is stuff all over the floor. A basket of clothes that never moves, blankets for winter that need washing and other assorted items. I really need to sort it out as Hubby might be coming up for knee replacement surgery soon? Who knows- he has a specialist appointment at the end of this month so we will know more then. So it will be important that he has a clear path into bed. I might need to change the orientation of the bed to help him be able to access it easier. So many things to think about.

Re: The magic of tidying

You can come and clean my house @Oaktree! Anyway will get around to it, just focussing on other things for now such as sticking to my immediate goals. Today got to blanch some leftover vegies in my crisper for freezing. I went out the back yesterday and the garden needs weeding. Maybe just do a small thing each day. That is what I am doing. Breaking it down into manageable tasks makes it less overwhelming! 🙂

No chance!

I rarely clean in my own house.

I need to improve regarding this though.

I need to stop being so lazy.

There is so much that needs doing yet no motivation. Wish I could be like Tyme and suddenly get rid of everything. I have a life of stuff here. Portfolios from the kids from primary school that I can’t part with. I am hoping that the kids will want them eventually. Stuff that my husband inherited from his parents that we are keeping to pass on to our kids. So many books. Baskets and baskets of clean laundry with nowhere to store it all. It’s all pretty overwhelming! I can see the floor in the activity and dining rooms so I know that I am not a hoarder. My sister in law is a hoarder and you can’t even see her floor. I just have a problem with clutter and housework. I need some sort of magic pill to give me the motivation to get on top of things. My walls also need a good wash. So much to do, so little will to do it!

Ok you have stirred me into action. I have moved the washing basket into the spare room, put the blankets on the floor into the washing pile. Picked up the assortment of bags. Put some rubbish in the bin and taken it out to the big bin. Going to vacuum then take a break and think about it some more. This is the most I have done in ages. Talked to hubby about moving the bed around as well.

I vacuumed the bit of bedroom floor I could see. Need to unclutter the rest of the room.
