The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Hi @Dimity , well done on working through papers. I find papers the hardest.

This sounds like a good result.

I feel for you. I hope your sleep improves... 🤞

I guess I must be making progress as I have some empty boxes. I'll reuse them for sorting and other things.

Just saw this...yes, empty boxes are progress 🙂

I collect them for Opp Shop stuff and for hiding things in the shed at rental inspection time.

I hope your paper sorting is going along OK...

Re: The magic of tidying

Yes I'm still on the papers @NatureLover . The piles don't look much different but I've shredded a lot. I need to find my magnifiers so I can read old letters. I'd love to re-establish a reading habit too so I can face my unread books.

I came across old legal correspondence last week that may have contributed to my health scare (assuming it was stress-related). I couldn't deal with it... I'll have to come back to it. I think the next few weeks will be difficult as I'm facing a self-imposed deadline to get on top of things and resolve a family situation and make a decision. My psychologist is overseas and my psychiatrist hasn't acknowledged or responded to my calls, I guess he concluded everything was under control.

I'll try to sort more stuff for the op shop this week.

Papers can be confronting. I'm sorry to hear some of them might have contributed to your health scare 😞 @Dimity

I think it's fine to put some stuff in the Too Hard Basket for later.

When is your psychologist back?

That sounds stressful...how best can I support you?

Re: The magic of tidying

Hello @NatureLover . My psychologist is away for about 4 weeks but I'll be catching up with my gp and psychiatrist in the next week or two.

Thanks, I'm just appreciating your interest and ongoing support... it's making it easier to persevere with the daily grind, which is what counts at the moment as that's where I have more control.

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity I'm glad your GP and psychiatrist are available in the next couple of weeks.

I agree, having someone checking in with you daily is comforting.

How are the difficult papers going?

Re: The magic of tidying

Thanks for asking about the papers @NatureLover it made me get a folder out of the box and shred some. I think I'll be able to move forward on them again now.

I'll have a look at another box or two of books. It would be good to be able to fill another box for the opshop, as then I'd have enough to justify another trip.

I'd like to get into the garden again soon. It will be something to look forward to in a couple of days.
