The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Dimity thanks for your post. Just thought I’d clarify as I’ve not created the right picture of what was happening. My flat mate is a beautiful creature and my best friend. I was just being slack…so got a very gentle and probably well-earned smack. Sorry this wasn’t clearer…

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Dimity how are you going with tidying ?

Hello all, @Delicatessen @Shaz51 @TAB @RedHorse

I have a sad situation at home, my home is messy, and I don't have furniture really, it doesn't make sense wher everything is set up, and I don't have storage. I moved in pre covid and it isn't the right space for me, currently trying to move. But kinda OT being committed tot he space I've lived like a tourist in my own home. I didn't set it up nor feel settled.

I like marie kondo a lot but feel challenged as well by the concept.

I more don't know where to put stuff, that gives me anxiety.

Rings a bell a bit. I never really set my place up any different to how it was when moved there. Ok was part furnished . Anyway all moot now as got given notice to move out lol @EternalFlower

It's hard for me to settle in to some rentals, I feel transient

Re: The magic of tidying

So much happening for you @TAB I hope you're managing to keep on top of it all. Hope you're keeping well in yourself. The rental situation seems pretty fraught on the east coast, I hope it's better for you in the west.

Nice to see you @EternalFlower. My place is still messy and cluttered with stuff I've accumulated over 35 years. I've been inching through old paperwork but not making much impact - progress is slow. At least I'm putting out a full recycling bin and I've also been shredding stuff.

It can't be easy to feel transient and unsettled between rentals. I've lived in rentals too, the shortest for 9 months. I don't really feel at home here, home to me means relationships as much as a sense of place, and I don't feel like I belong anywhere.

Hearing you re not re feeling not belonging @Dimity

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi all

Does anyone else have trouble with storage?

I know maire kondo famously said "storage experts are hoarders" and tried to shift the focus away from buying more storage crap, to throwing stuff away

I really have no storage though

Just one cupboard with hanging rails, my space has no drawers.

It ends up with more crop being thrown around and shoved in weird spaces

So I wander if more storage spaces could help me @Dimity @TAB @Delicatessen @RedHorse @Shaz51
