The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

I am suffering from cbf too @TAB but I have to get the house ready for the weekend. I have the kids and their partners coming over for dinner on Sunday. We are having chicken tacos.

I have spent too long doing absolutely nothing.

Re: The magic of tidying

You did a good job @Oaktree . If I wash the walls of my bathroom or toilet I'll have to try to do the skylight shafts - not easy.

Washing is an achievement too @TAB . I did a load too and a massive wash-up. And I have to mop up after the cat most days, poor old boy has a few problems.

I need to get motivated again.

I found the Fab Five helpful...

  • Five focussed minutes
  • Floor
  • Flat surfaces
  • Force it to fit (in 1 of 3 categories: trash, has a home, doesn't have a home)
  • Finish

@Dimity

I need to get motivated quickly, I have a cleaner coming on Monday afternoon and I need to find flat surfaces for her to clean.

Thanks for the list of 5 things.

@Oaktree The 5 minute thing worked for me last night, it helped me tackle the bedroom. Tackle the floor first, it looks better and gives space to vacuum.

I got out the ironing board a couple of days ago, I have a pile of ironing waiting to be done. Maybe tomorrow!

Good job for last night @Dimity

Good luck for the ironing tomorrow. I believe in you. Don’t procrastinate just do it!

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Dimity

How did you go with the ironing?

I am about to set my timer for 15 minutes and start tidying up. It’s amazing how much you can get done in as little as 15 minutes
