Topic Tuesday // Healthy Relationships in Lockdown // Tues 31st August, 7:00-8:30PM AEST

Hi SANE community,

This fortnight we will be having a discussion on healthy relationships, but specifically in the context of lockdowns, which affect many of us across Australia today. Our guest speaker, a relationship counsellor, will be here to speak on boundaries, communication skills and conflict resolution to guide those of you who may be struggling to sustain harmony and connection with family, partners or roommates when stuck in the home.

The last two years have been really tough with a novel virus circulating the world, and extended and frequent lockdowns being snapped in place. Mental health organisations, like SANE, Lifeline and 1800 RESPECT have shown that lockdowns have caused significant hardship and stress on individuals whether that be financially, physically or emotionally, and the effects of that hardship and stress are becoming more apparent in the home and in relationships.

This Topic Tuesday will hold space for us to discuss boundaries and ways to communicate with those in our lives to mend and/or maintain a healthy relationship dynamic when we’re stuck sharing the same space. It may be an important and valuable topic for those who have experienced, might be experiencing or could experience a relationship breakdown in lockdown.

Please join us here on Tuesday the 31st of August 2021 from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEST to follow this conversation.

We recognise that situations at home and in relationships are at various stages, and we welcome everyone to bring their experiences to this space. If you are experiencing a situation at home puts your safety at risk, please contact emergency services or contact 1800 RESPECT for referrals and additional support. This discussion will more generally discuss ideas around boundaries and relationship communication skills, however we will also provide information on resources that may be available to you.

Hi @Daisydreamer thanks for the tag - I am not in lockdown over here in the West presently but will follow along regardless. Here's hoping that the lockdowns will be over soon as they are very bad for the communities mental health

I think with relationships in lockdown its very tricky because its such a separating time. I had a great weekend with calls to friends but theres lots of people its hard to have a conversation with now.

Question 2: Creating and sustaining healthy relationships often involve having boundaries. What are boundaries, and how do they help? What are some examples of healthy and unhealthy boundaries?

Question 2: Creating and sustaining healthy relationships often involve having boundaries. What are boundaries, and how do they help?

Boundaries act like a fence around us to keep us safe. It also shows others whether their boundaries are in relation to us. Everyone’s boundaries will be different based on personal preference, upbringing, trauma, and past relationships.

Since lockdown and a lot of people working from home or being stuck at home with their loved ones, means that some of these boundaries have become blurred. For example: working from home means that you see your partner or loved ones more than what you normally would. This can lead to conflict that we would not otherwise have. Working from the office meant physical separation and often means that the other we or the other person was not available during that time. While we are home together, we naturally may associate their physical presence with them being available.

Physical proximity might lead to assumptions that the other person is available mentally and emotionally during the day or our partner might assume the same from us.

We determine our own boundaries whether they are considered healthy or unhealthy, at some point in our lives these specific boundaries served or still serve a purpose to help us feel safe physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

To determine boundaries, we need to consider our Personal Boundaries by asking a few questions:

  • Where do I begin and end?
  • Where do my responsibility begin and where does it end?
  • What are my needs?
  • What are my values?
