Welcome and getting started

One step forward.....

One step forward.....

Hello everyone. How is Sunday going for you? I had my stove and oven installed today and have had the opportunity to run it for a while. All the kitchen finishing off is still to do, but I will be able to cook again and eat healthily. It was really affecting my health. Almost 6 weeks without a kitchen. All of my cupboard contents have to be rearranged now, and knowing where to put everything in the most workable way is still taxing my imagination. The refrigerator is still in the living room and I still go to the bathroom to boil the kettle and wash up - by habit. Can't wait for it all to be done but still so much to do. At least the basic kitchen work has been done - it's functional - and my handyman can only come for certain jobs during lockdown. Probably weeks more of it.

So you'd think I'd be feeling rather better than I do, but I've been thinking of how things will be when the job is done. As it is, he, they come and go and it is really taxing to have to find things to occupy myself in the limited, spare space available while trying to maintain just a little privacy. However when completed I will be completely on my own again. Don't know how I will be able to handle any more of that.

I enrolled in an online course because for me that is my best option, but I am anticipating that the technology part will be my undoing despite my eagerness to start. I have been using computers for probably decades but my skills have only advanced as far as my needs have required. First day may find me battling to find the way to start and becoming quickly disillusioned. Living alone and not having anyone to ask for help is so difficult. They have a helpline but a request I made two days ago hasn't been responded to yet. On first day, they will probably be inundated.

I'm feeling very low today and just needed to reach out to find some support from my online friends. Sending best wishes to all. Hope the prospect of Spring around the corner is mood lifting for everyone.

Re: One step forward.....

So happy for you to have old friends move close by @Eve7. Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend.

I've been nibbling on strawberries myself today - a bargain at Aldi, have managed to reduce my biscuit intake, and avoided the confectionary aisle completely while shopping. And I bought ingredients to make muesli. Hope my intentions are enacted. Thinking healthily again.

I love to sit at a nice table too. Even a table for one.

I haven't kept up with the latest lockdown news here. Seems out of control in NSW.

Hoping you have a good day back at work tomorrow and sending best wishes 🌺

Hi @Historylover ,

Your new kitchen etc sounds awesome! I've realised that owning a home isn't just about owning it. There's forever something to do - whether it be renovating, painting, fixing, gardening... list goes on.

@Historylover , i too live alone. But I think I've chosen to because in a way, I do enjoy it. How do you find it?

I went for a good walk in the sunshine today. That was very pleasant. At least I have a touch with the 'living' as I walk past people and say hi. That's as much socialisation as we can have at the moment in lockdown.

Today, I also had a good homemade main meal of rissoles and veges. I've just had a hot chocolate and am winding down for the night.

The moon is beautiful tonight.

Hope you feel better soon.

Re: One step forward.....

Living alone,@Appleblossom, means that I am always having to find different ways to use the same ingredients so that they don't go to waste, and I get a variety of meals from them. Sometimes, though, anything will do. As long as it's wholesome.

It may have been you, then, who had described your to-do list of renovations recently - including the hand-basin in the bathtub, as I recall. It's all a matter of priorities in all things, isn't it? And we can become so used to it all so easily! It can become a way of life - unless your floor space is as seriously diminished as mine is. Wait until it's time to paint and lay the carpet - and moving all the furniture from room to room. Hope it all looks nice when it's finished. It should. And it will all be so clean! I'll never have the luxury of a dishwasher here - wouldn't fit anyway - and I have never had one in my own homes either. They weren't seen as so necessary then. I have no difficulty washing dishes anyway. Always nice to see the kitchen back in order afterwards.

Yes @Appleblossom, it's wonderful to see so many replies. I'm very grateful for them. I've never gone to bed and left dishes on the sink. I hope tonight won't change my clean record. Cheers.

Thank you @Historylover

I bought my strawberries at Aldi too but usually I get them at the markets.

I was living alone too but S1 is here for a while after an accident that left him needing his mother’s care. Then eldest gd moved in and my quiet home is busy once again.

Are you feeling any better this evening? It’s been nice to chat with you.

Re: One step forward.....

I don't own this unit @BPDSurvivor but the responsibility of just keeping it spick and span makes me feel I do. It will, even more so, when I am able to add my finishing touches to the refurbishment and make it feel more personal. I bought some new furniture recently, and it certainly felt good to see how much difference just a few changes can make.

Living alone is something of a mixed bag. No-one to ask for help is one handicap - or open a jar, or share a car with. On the whole though I have made the best of it. There are no moments of friction, a fraction of the workload and I can please myself about everything, at all times, try things not agreeable to others and develop different directions, interests, likes and dislikes.

I went for a walk too. It was very nice. I try to most days, but some days my feet need a break.

And WOW! The moon is incredible tonight! So bright!

Goodnight @BPDSurvivor. Sleep well. I'll be doing the same soon.

It's been lovely to chat with you too, @Eve7. And with everyone else as well. I think I'll have to stop and do my dishes soon - then to bed. It's been a big day, and all of this irregularity and constant searching for things has left me feeling thoroughly exhausted, and just wishing it was done so I could sit back and revel in it! Next thing will be Spring cleaning so I'm not too worried about it at the moment.

I'm feeling better for the company, yes @Eve7. I just wish my circumstances weren't as they are and that someone had a magic wand I could use to make my situation better. I hope I haven't missed anyone's post to reply to. Goodnight all and thank you.

Re: One step forward.....

Ha ha @Historylover Good on You!

I never had that goal about not leaving clean dishes. I see it as a continual cycle and had too many other things to do raising 3 kids etc.

Yes the basin is still in the bath. This mini reno is reno Numero Two. Numero Uno was in late 80s early 90s with said kids. It is probably why I am laid back as we renovated for about 8 years. As in we did all the work etc etc, so it was not just a matter of putting up with inconvenience. Yeah ripping off old smelly, overbearing wallpaper, ripping up rotten carpets.... oh those were the days indeed!

I have lived alone a few times for a few years. Has its ups and downs. Hope you like the course.

Take Care

Re: One step forward.....

Hi @Historylover I hope Monday is a good day as y for you.

It's lovely to hear the progress on your reno. The stove is a milestone. It sounds as though the cabinets are finished too?

Good luck with the online course. I've had mixed success with Zoom on my tablet and need to set up my new laptop. The IT people at your institution might have a FAQ page to help you get started til you can get individual help.

Hoping you're feeling better

Re: One step forward.....

Oh, @Appleblossom! Getting up to dirty dishes is so much worse in the morning! And then you have the breakfast dishes as well! Aaargh!

Renovating is a lot of hard work, but it is so rewarding when you get to look at the progress and the improvements in each area. Our last house was renovated from the stumps up, but it turned out well. And such a lot of fun - landscaping, choosing colours, curtains etc.

It's just a short course to re-familiarize re tertiary learning strategies. I was going to enrol for a proper course but decided to start slowly. It's been a long time since I did formal study. I'd like to do another course to follow on, but I doubt I will be able to manage it online. I'm not optimistic re my chances of finishing this one but I'll try. I really think the online aspect may stymie me.

Anyway, Monday is here and we move on. Sending best wishes.
