Severe, long term depression

Severe, long term depression

I thought I would start a thread for those of us who have severe, long term depression, such as a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

I thought we could use this space to talk about things like:

- Our day to day experience of depression.

- How depression affects our lives.

- What supports we have or think we need.

- Coping strategies and self care.

- What works for us/what doesn't work for us.

- Our attitudes towards recovery.

- A clear explanation of the Recovery Model.

- The importance of having good doctors and therapists.

- What it is like for us to deal with mental health organisations.

- What it is like for us to be consumers of the mental health system.

- The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

- A clear explanation of stigma.

- Our dreams and goals.

And generally being of support to one another.

I'm just suggesting these as ideas to start us off but of course we can talk about anything.

Re: Severe, long term depression

Hello @frog and @oceangirl and anyone else who may be following this thread.

Will you support me in fighting my depression? I really want to try and fight it. There was a time when I was managing it really well and I didn't have any symptoms of mental illness for six months. But it came back and now it is really bad. It's like I have given up on life (and myself). I don't know how to feel motivated again. I don't even remember what being motivated feels like. It is just so bad. It is overwhelming.

Tonight I called the psychiatric triage team and I'm in the process of getting a referral to PARC. But I'm not even sure if I will be able to go because my car has broken down and I haven't been able to get in touch with the lady who usually looks after my Pug.

Morning @Arizona sorry I missed you last night. How did the referral process go?

Your list is great! I need to think about making one too. I'm working today but will drop back in from time to time. Take care.

Hello @frog

I'm still waiting for the community mental health service to call me. I called them today and I'm still waiting.

Re: Severe, long term depression

I have sent an email to my therapist and asked her to call them. That might hurry things up a bit.

My depression is really bad. I have been in bed all day. As much as I want to fight my depression I can't.

Re: Severe, long term depression

I agree @oceangirl and @Arizona. It's about the small wins and seeing the good somehow. I saw something today on another social site about keeping bad moments from becoming bad days. I've started trying to look at a moment instead of auto-labeling a whole day as bad. My problem is that I have had a lot of major losses (relationship, career, loved ones, etc.), but somehow this time I have not fully given up. I'm pretty isolated though. In the past I would be catatonic or bedridden for months. I have a good doctor and team around me, but I still don't know what's going on with the world day to day from my own personal experience (and not just a tv or social media).

Re: Severe, long term depression

As I was 60 minutes into my dissertation (aka my forum post about depression) I had an epiphany. I was explaining in detail why I dislike the word 'consumers' and why it's so offensive to me. I stopped writing and caught myself wondering why I do this.

I think and say such mean things, although as politely and with as much "goodwill" as possible (at least I tell myself this). But really, this is how I am losing my career, my marriage, and pretty much everything else that matters to me. I am miserable. Deep down. And it flips like a switch. I am a horrible, horrible person. And an a-hole. I don't know what to do.

Your post re about keeping bad moments from becoming bad days helped me @ItsMeAgain

I see you as a good person doing the best that you can in the face of loss and isolation.

@Arizonaeach little step is a good one. I am going at snail's pace during lockdown. But I got up, and I'm doing small things, which actually is a big deal.
