Welcome and getting started

I think life would be easier to just give up trying

I think life would be easier to just give up trying

I really try to help myself, to work hard at getting well mentally. Like a lot of people on here I have been getting really down and not able to pull myself together so my and husband and I went away for a week camping as this usually helps to lift me. I made an appointment to see my GP for when I got back. All the benefit of that week away just disappeared in a moment of seeing the Dr. I wanted to ask if there was anyone she could refere me to to help me to stop my severe panic attacks and disassociation as this is really affecting my life and that of my husband as he is the one left to deal with me afterwards. The reply was a straight no, no other words no suggestions nothing. I then said I would like to come off the AD as I was on a low dose already and felt they were making me more depressed as I wasn't able to get on top of things like I could before. But I was unsure if I was doing it the right way. I am getting stomach cramps and palpitations taking them only on alternating days. Her reply was that she's happy for me to stop straight away but I can continue for a week doing it my way, but I will just have to put up with the side effects. She was happy to give me a script for sedatives to help when I have panic attacks, of which I already have. Because of her bedside manner so to speak, I asked her if she preferred for me to see someone else and that I had chosen her because it said she had a special interest in mental health. I have never been abrupt, disrespectful etc she apologised, but by this stage I was very upset. She did take me into urgent care so I could laydown until the numbness went and could walk which was nice.
I now realise that there is no help available for me. It is really hard to accept this. But I have no options. I feel so worthless and very empty atm. I just didn't feel ready to give up.

Yikes - that's not good - I always thought it was a GPs job to refer you to therapists for assistance with things like panic attacks and disassociation - maybe it would be a good idea to see someone else - it can't do any harm and might help a lot

But - it is not good to just give up - that will get you nowhere. It might be really hard to go from day to day and I understand this but giving up? No. I can't agree with that

It's a long time since I went through depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief etc and I have found life to be so much better - I am glad I went through all the therapy I had. So I think - really do think - it would be better to see another GP at least for the referral.

I do wish you the best

You are not upsetting us hon, you are just expressing your thoughts and feelings @Former-Member and that is fine to do. I hope getting it out helps a little.

I was shocked when I read about that @Former-Member

Personally I think it's responsible to ask for help and not always easy - well done for asking

And I am glad you don't give up easily - I don't either

So sorry to read of your situation @Former-Member. I am going through the same thing. I don't know what the answer is. I know we have to have as much insight into our situation and care as possible - but there is always a need for theirs, isn't there?

Your doctor is falling far short of what is required. She upset you to that extent then sent you to urgent care to recover? Words fail. I have experienced similar myself.

If only their 'bedside manner' was equal to ours. Thinking of you. I can only send my best wishes - and wish that it was enough. Take care. And don't give up. Ever.

P.S. You're not upsetting anyone. Many of us are walking the same path and are happy to walk with you. It's just not good enough.

@Historylover @Snowie @Owlunar @Arizona thank you for your supports, sorry I didn't make much sense with the I don't give up easily.....but what I meant to follow it with was to say is I AM giving up. That's what a glass of wine does when you don't drink that often! I just don't understand how people can be so cold towards a person who is asking for help. I just can't do it anymore. Believe me I really have tried. 💞

Wow @Former-Member - I mean no wonder you feel like giving up, that is really awful. Our MH system and medical system really, really need to be more integrated, because it sounds like you need more expert and compassionate mental health care. Perhaps your GP simply went "Well you're not about to die and I can't see your illness so I can't help you..." which is unfortunately a pretty common attitude.

You're not alone in these experiences, and I really hope you can find some MH support that is actually what you need. It can be a bit of trial and error sometimes. If you haven't already, you could always have a chat to one of the lovely counsellors in the SANE Help Centre?

In regards to panic attacks in particular, you may also wish to look into the Anxiety Recovery Centre of Victoria (they have information and resources as well as a helpline which operates nationally).

I hope you are able to get some rest and respite from all you're dealing with. We're here beside you in the meantime.
