Parentalness

Parentalness

The truth is when my ex left, it wasn't just me that got left behind, she left our son too. He stays with me pretty much full time. 2days/1night away and a few extra hours one morning during the week. There wasn't a conversation exactly about this arrangement, it just kind of made sense at the time since I work from home I guess. And of course I love that he's with me, no doubt about that.

I've been reluctant to admit this is the situation. I'm not really sure why. No that's a lie. Because I'm ashamed of the way I am. I'm not a healthy person, some days I can't do more than sit on the couch. And the truth is, my son see's me like this, and it's very hard to admit because I'm so ashamed of myself for it. I try so hard to be the best I can be for him, but it's not easy. I don't have any support, it's just him and me. He's a good kid, the absolute best, it's just tiring. And I never have time to do any work, or if I do have time I'm too fu*king exhausted. I don't like doing work when my boy is with me, but that doesn't leave a huge window of opportunity to get anything done now really.

I've asked my ex to take on more time with our son, but she won't. I'm ok with it in the sense that I know she's not very mentally stable herself and not able to provide what I can for our son. But fu*k me, I'm so fu*king tired. I really wish I had just a little extra help. I'm not coping well trying to balance everything. Even when my son isn't with me, I'm too exhausted or depressed to get work done. Nothing is getting done.

I don't have a lot of money coming in, it's enough, but not much. Have had to dip into savings here and there. So I need to find a way to get work done somehow. I have said to my boy that sometimes I've gotta do some work but i just feel so guilty doing that.

I've been drinking too much. And I've started earlier than I should. Used to be able to hold off til after my son is in bed. Not now. And I know I shouldn't and i feel terrible admitting it here and i feel terrible every time i do drink. I don't want to turn into this person. I don't want to let my son down. I just can't cope with it all. I need something to help get me through. It's terrible. I'm terrible. I'm struggling so badly with everything. I'm trying to protect my boy from it, so he doesn't see it. But he sees it. I hate myself for that.

He doesn't deserve any of this shit. He's the best fu*king kid in the world. I'm so ashamed of myself for not being better and stronger for him. And I feel ashamed of myself for even asking my ex to do more. Because i am so lucky he is here with me most of the time. Incredibly lucky. I shouldn't complain. But I'm struggling with it.

When he is here with me, it helps to keep me sane. It keeps me alive, it keeps my mind focused, it reminds me why I need to get better. But when he is here I'm also longing for time to myself so i can just fall apart and not have to hide anything for a little while. Then he goes with my ex and I lose all sense. I get so fu*ked up when I'm alone getting lost in all my shit. And when I'm alone I don't want to go back to being a parent. I just want to be selfish and drown in all of my misery. Then he comes back to me and I'm relieved to see him, I feel so much joy and happiness and it all comes back to me. Being without him, being alone with my thoughts is very hard. When he's not here it gets very bad for me. I don't get any work done, I just get fu*ked up. I'm not used to having so much time alone with my thoughts. It's really hard. It's not a good place to be in. Nothing is making sense to me anymore.

I also haven't wanted to elaborate on here that my son is with me more than my ex because I don't want any praise for that. I don't want anyone giving me a pat on the back for doing what all parents should do--be there for their kid.

Anyway. It's out there now.

Re: Parentalness

@saltandpepper what a difficult situation you're in 😞

I don't know if your savings will stretch to it, but could you hire a regular babysitter to take your son out for several afternoons a week? The feeling that you need some relief from the pressure comes through strongly.

Sending virtual hugs...

Re: Parentalness

Theoretically yes @NatureLover I could go down the babysitter route. But in practice, I don't think past trauma is going to allow it. It's why I have turned my work and everything on its head so he wouldn't have to go into daycare or anything. I realise thats perhaps not very rational, but I can't do it to him

I'm not sure I understand, @saltandpepper ...are you thinking that a babysitter might traumatise him?

Re: Parentalness

@NatureLover I want to explain but it's not easy. Just that when I was a kid and left in the "care" of others I had things happen to me. Things that are with me today and infect every aspect of my life. I can't bear the thought of anything like that happening to my boy.

Re: Parentalness

I thought it might be something along those lines, @saltandpepper 😞 and I'm sorry to hear about your past trauma while in the care of others. 😞

You are being a protective parent.

I just hope that you can also find a way to build some times of relief from the constant pressure into your life somehow.

Virtual hugs.

Re: Parentalness

hello son @saltandpepper

how old is your son again ??, sorry if you have told me

sometimes it is hard to find that balance between it all

I know you love him and he loves being with you which is soo awesome

Re: Parentalness

Yeah @NatureLover you've prompted me to think about what other options I have. He responds really well to me so if I sit him down and talk it out we might be able to come to a new routine I guess where I get some time during the day to work. As much as I didn't want to do that, think its just no longer sustainable. I can't do it all. Never been capable of doing it all so not sure why I've been busting my guts to do that now with less help. That was dumb.

Yeah, it's not easy navigating it all. I find myself thinking on it a lot more as my son ages. I am terrified of letting him go off to school. Ruled out any school that has a religion component since that's all wrapped in my issues. Still terrified of letting him go though no matter where it is.

@Shaz51 hey mum how are ya? My boy is 4 now. And yeah I'm pretty lucky, he seems to think I'm alright for company and we get on really well 🙂

Re: Parentalness

yes @saltandpepper

ahhhh yes a 4 year old is exciting, tiring, enjoyable age

yes not to far off schooling there son , knowing which school to pick can be stressful and you have to be comfortable as well

what may have happened to us does not not mean it will happen to our children

then there is home schooling and has his mum said anything about schooling xx

Re: Parentalness

@Shaz51 Yeah it's going to be good and bad re school I think. Good because I might get back on track with work but probably going to tale a while to ease the nerves around it all.

Nope the ball is pretty much in my court with decision making I think @Shaz51. Which is not really any different to when we were together. She has her own set of issues so yeah, think all the heavy lifting re our son will fall to me

Would never want to deprive him of being around kids in school, plus I'm way too stupid to home school haha but i want him to go to school and make friends and all that, I still want him doing things despite my anxiety around it all. I know those are just my issues, and I feel like perhaps because of the things I went through I'm a bit more aware than my parents ever were. Hypervigilance for the win :ok_hand:

Re: Parentalness

Today was a better day. Think making this post has helped me to see things a bit clearer, helped me to be accountable I guess. Actually got some shit done today. Groceries, cleaning, work, cooking and plenty of play time with the little man. And to top it all off, I challenged myself to hold off drinking until after my son had gone to bed. Just cracking open the first can now. Can't really believe I managed it considering I've been itching to have one since 3pm.

Today has been a better day.
