Hey @Shaz51
The only thing I've found to stop and/or reverse the weight gain is a strict diet and exercise. The diet plays the biggest role but the exercise and fresh air are good for the sole.
I'm on a old type psych med that is notorious for weight gain, but when I eat strict and exercise daily I lose weight.
There's a lot of ways to tidy up the diet.
Main things I keep a watch on his processed foods, and high carb foods. So think of cutting out junk food, excess sugar, grains (bread, pastas, etc). Eat lean meats, chicken breast, lean mince. You can eat as many veggies & salad stuff cause they are low cal high nutrients. Stay away from high cal, low nutrition foods, which is essentially processed stuff.
Also try and cut back on dairy, cheeses, butters etc they are loaded in cals. And forget about "diet foods" they are loaded with sugar. For me sugar is bad for my bipolar, it makes my swings much much worse because my blood sugar levels are constantly spiking and dropping.
when I eat clean I feel so much better. My meds work better (lower dosages) and over all I just feel a lot healthier.
It's okay to splurge on a cheat meal once a week where Mr Shaz can eat whatever he wants, but you have to be strict about it. I have b*nge eating disorder so the cheat meal turns into months of poor food choices for me. So I try and keep things strict all the time. It is HARD WORK, but it is worth it. Something you can look at is the Paleo Diet. I've found I do better and my bipolar does better on this than anything. And you don't have to count cals, because you are eating nutritious foods they fill you up without the added weight gain.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions just sing out. I'm a bit manic still so my answer might be a bit disjointed.
luv n hugs xx
