Hi Klutz
I've had bipolar symptoms since age 13, probably even earlier. My grandma had psychotic depression. One of her sisters had schizophrenia and the other died in an asylum aged 26. My Mum had anxiety all her life. I'm now 67 years old and wasn't formally diagnosed with Bipolar 1 until 2011, despite having, often manic and hypomanic symptoms (only became totally psychotic once). I've had episodes of severe depression and panic attacks caused by anxiety, even as recently as 2022. Basically, my entire life has been swinging from ups to downs (mainly ups). I've fought medication many times in my manic/hypomanic states and refusing to take it has landed me in deep depression, not to mention embarrassing situations and financial difficulty. It's only last year (2022) that I've accepted that, even at this age, that medication is a necessary part of life. I must admit that this is the first Christmas I've been stable, which is great, because historically this is when I become manic. I have 3 wonderful sons and a beautiful and supportive family, with 4 adorable grandchildren plus some amazing friends. Ironically, my one constant, the activity that never fails to bring me joy, is my love for Tai Chi, which I've been learning and teaching for over 27 years. I recommend trying it as an alternative therapy for the mind, body and spirit. I know it's not for everyone but certainly worth trying. Wishing you all the best and hope you feel more stable soon.
