Welcome and getting started

Feeling guilty about regressing

Feeling guilty about regressing

I've got PTSD and depression with anxiety. After years of hard work I've gone backwards. My Go took me off my antidepressants and thought that we'd try using this new drug ( which after a week of nothing started me on half a tablet today!). Less than the minimum dose.

I'm tired and in pain and can't be bothered with anything and to make matters worse I'm in the psychological science and counseling area. I cannot even use positive card's, meditation not a thing is working for me I just can't take anything in. I've had to take time off until the end of May so that I can go into hospital and have TMS treatment hopefully they'll have a bed next week. I'm exhausted I'm getting flashbacks and nightmares and feel so guilty I should know better than this. I wish that I could go to sleep and wind down. I am past my past and yet I'm having nightmares and flashbacks. I don't know if this makes a lot of sense or if it just sounds like a blur of incoherent nonsense but I'm feeling guilty for being unwell after all this time. I'm not looking for sympathy just wondering if you have gone through this at some point

@Bow could not agree more, but we can at least try I guess 🤷.

You have a whole community here.

Hugs.

I am so glad I found this website.

Re: Feeling guilty about regressing

Hello again @MichMichelle

You may not recall, but we 'met' on my thread yesterday, where you had very kindly posted. 😊

I'm really pleased to see that you have opened a support thread of your own here .. well done. And thank you very much for sharing just a small part of your own story.

As you already know, I too have PTSD along with severe anxiety and intermittent depression. I have taken medications in the past, but am currently not on anything on a regular basis. Although I do take medication to help with ptsd-related nightmares, as and when needed during triggering times.

I'm sorry that after years of hard work, you now find yourself going backwards when your GP took you off the ADs you were on, and now trying you on something else. Can I ask what prompted this change? Did you find that the ADs you were on before were no longer working as well as they used to? I guess I'm wondering why your GP would make this change at all .. was it simply for the sake of change? Or was the other ADs having an effect on other possible health issues?

It must be very upsetting to be in this situation where you have needed to take time off work for up to 3 months. I'm hoping you are able to get into a hospital bed next week, in order for TMS treatment to commence. I know from personal experience just how exhausting nightmares and flashbacks are, and I really feel for you.

Yes, I want to reassure you that what you said in your opening post, makes perfect sense. And I too often feel guilty, useless and pathetic every time I go backwards. For me, I have been very unwell for 25 years .. and yes I tell myself I should be over it by now. I tell myself to just suck it up and not be such a wimp. But sadly it really doesnt help. I'm hoping that for you .. the TMS and an increased AD dosage will do the trick for you .. and get you back on track.

And as a final comment ... well done you, for being in the psychological science and counselling area of employment. It must be very fullfilling to know that you make a difference in other peoples lives.

Hi @MichMichelle how are you going?

Hi @Emelia8 lovely to read your kind words.

Hi @Former-Member that hug gif is so wonderful.

Hi @Bow I agree self-kindness more complex than just knowing it may help us.

Hi @Owlunar have to quote again that part of your post that said:

"I have read and think it's true that although we seem to slip backwards at times we never really go back to where we were at the beginning of our journey. We are always learning something during the hard-work times and the easier times...".

That spoke to me.

Re: Feeling guilty about regressing

Thank you for your help and support hopefully I'll be able to get a bed in hospital this week. I also have horrific pain from injuries sustained and operations so it's good to hear from you and hear that you're struggling to. Get well soon x

Hi there @Emelia8,

Welcome to the thread.

I am so sorry; to you and everyone diagnosed with PTSD, and for all of the agony it causes.

Do not ever think that you "should just be over it", because the truth is "it" happened, "it" will stay with you in your memories, and this is the mind's way of living with "it". You are doing great everyday that you are alive and surviving your illnesses and disorders.

All the best.
