Topic Tuesday // Men's Mental Health and Peer Support // Tues 9th March, 7:00-8:30PM AEDT

Hello SANE forum members and readers 👋

This month we will be having two Topic Tuesday events!

On the 9th of March, 7:00-8:30pm AEDT we will be welcoming The Banksia Project as our special guest to talk about Men's Mental Health and their Peer Support Service.

Men's Mental Health and the work of The Banksia Project

The Banksia Project offer a preventative program to support the mental health and wellbeing of men across Australia. Their peer based services allow men to support each other, no matter where you are at in your recovery or wellbeing journey. From getting through the tough times, to building connection and community, The Banksia Project's Growth Rooms allow a space for mates to support mates in local communities and nationally.

This Topic Tuesday event will discuss Men's Mental Health, the role of mates supporting mates, and explore the opportunities for support through The Banksia Project's Growth Room Programs.

Here is a little bit about The Banksia Project and how they support men across Australia:

I'm new here - what is this?

The event runs from 7:00pm-8:30pm AEDT and is a live, facilitated Q&A style discussion with a special guest. Each month we focus on a different topic with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator, and joined by a Peer Support Worker.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Our text-based event takes place right here! As it is text-based, no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the newest comments (it doesn't automatically update). The refresh button looks like this: Keep an eye out for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop for the event for overall ease of use .

Throughout the session, the facilitator will post questions for the guest to answer, and you can provide your answer too. To contribute to the event, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong, and everyone is welcome to get involved!

If you can't make it to the live event, but are still interested in the topic, you can always read back through this discussion at a later time.

What time does this event start in my timezone?

  • AEDT - 7:00pm
  • AEST - 6:00pm
  • ACDT - 6:30pm
  • ACST - 5:30pm
  • WST - 4:00pm

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Topic Tuesday discussions can cover some heavy topics. If you are feeling distress during this live discussion, there are support options available to you. You can start a new discussion on the forums and talk to other members, contact the SANE Help Centre on 1800 18 7263, or find crisis support options here.

I can defintiely relate to this! Being a peer support worker gave me such a strong sense of meaning and purpose, and hearing others stories gave me so many strategies I could bring into my life too.

It sounds like this is exactly what the Banksia Project does; empowers peers to support each other, but also provide the skills and training for men who want to take that next step to be a support to their communities. A lot like our amazing forums community!

@BanksiaProject
That is true, if mens partners are supportive and encourage them to seek support it can be helpful too

@BanksiaProject You’ve mentioned that from your living and working experiences that you have been involved in designing services around the challenges of men, would you be able to elaborate a bit more on what some of the challenges that the Banksia Projects helps to address/provide support for?

Thanks for the question @Daisydreamer.

Firstly, we are dedicated to ensuring that our Growth Rooms do not represent a 'one size fits all' model. Whilst we have a framework, some safety measures and guidance for Participants and Facilitators, our programs are designed so that individuals from all walks of life can take the learnings and apply them to their own circumstances.

We do however see some common themes amongst men who are struggling that we try to address:

- Lack of mental health literacy - we provide educational modules (designed by clinicians) to pass on effective skills around mental health and wellbeing. A "Gym for the Mind" - places to get mentally fit and resilient, ideally before crisis.

- Social Isolation - Our Growth Rooms help men 'find their tribe'. A team of men who are supporting them authentically, for who they truly are, through life's ups and downs.

- Lack of authenticity - Growth Rooms are spaces for men to express whatever they are feeling without judgement. We want them to be able to be honest and open, without fear of judgement.

- Practice!! We want men to practice all of these things; skills, supporting others, authenticity and self-awareness.

Sorry for the long-winded response, but you asked!

You're so right @outlander !

Partners, friends, family members, colleagues, community! We can all play a role - we don't need to be the solution, but if we can get them to the appropriate professional solution, we have supported them in the best way possible!

@BanksiaProject “Gym for the mind” is a good way to think about early intervention and prevention services! And I love the 'Find your tribe' approach- connection and community are such important foundations for wellbeing.

Something we hear a lot is loneliness, and feeling like there isn't a place to belong- I love that The Banksia Project promotes connection.

Question 4: How is the Banksia Project different from other services?

Question 4: How is the Banksia Project different from other services?

Our services provide an open, judgement-free, safe environment for men to come together as often as they need to face life’s challenges. We work in the early intervention stage of mental health, so this means we can work together with men on anything they may face on a day to day basis.

We also ensure our programs are delivered by local community members. When we launch our programs in new communities (ie. Rural locations), we aren't looking to just 'provide a service'. We're looking to train the community members and guide them so that they can support each other. This really contributes to our peer-led, peer-run model. It is relevant, sensitive and appropriate!
