Topic Tuesday // Trauma and Recovery// Blue Knot Foundation // Tues 23rd February 2021, 8:00-9:00PM AEDT

Hello to our wonderful Lived Experience forum members and readers 👋

This month we are excited to welcome the President of the Blue Knot Foundation, Cathy Kezelman, as our special guest for Topic Tuesday Live Chat Event on the topic of Trauma. Blue Knot are national leaders in supporting and empowering people who are recovering and healing after complex trauma.

Topic Tuesday will look a bit different this month as we are hosting two discussions back-to-back on the forums with the Blue Knot Foundation.

How will it work?

🔹 From 7:00-8:00pm AEDT, we will start the discussion in the Friends, Family and Carers forum talking on the topic of Understanding Trauma and Supporting Loved Ones (use this link to join the discussion!).

🔹
From 8:00-9:00pm AEDT the conversation will continue here in the Lived Experience Forum talking about Trauma and Recovery.

Trauma and Recovery

Recovery and healing after complex trauma is a personal journey and looks different for each person. The SANE forums community holds a space where many stories of trauma and recovery are shared, including the journeys of each person who is coping with the impact of trauma. This discussion will focus on the impact of trauma for survivors, recovery after trauma, finding trauma informed support services.

Earlier this month we put out a call for questions on the topic of trauma contributing to the planning of this event. We want to extend a huge thank you to the many members who posted questions for this live event- we have done our best to combine key themes and questions! 💙

Please join us here on Tuesday the 23rd of February 2021 from 8:00pm-9:00pm AEDT to follow this conversation.

I'm new here - what is this?

The event runs from 7:00 - 8.00pm AEDT on the 23rd of February in the Friends, Family and Carers forum, and then continues here in the Lived Experience Forum from 8:00 - 9:00pm AEDT. You are welcome to join for one or both of these discussions. Each month we focus on a different topic with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator, and joined by a Peer Support Worker.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Our text-based event takes place right here! As it is text-based, no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the newest comments (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye out for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post. We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop for the event for overall ease of use .

Throughout the session, the facilitator will post questions for the guest to answer, and you can provide your answer too. Usually the questions will ask for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the event, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong, and everyone is welcome to get involved!

My siblings & my mother have maintained contact with my cousin who SA's me (as a child) @Bunniekins @Cathyblueknot @Daisydreamer @Former-Member Despite my having told each of them.

I never forgot.

I just never told anyone until my mid-40's.

My brothers & Mum have tried to force me to have contact with this cousin, who SA's me.

After I told them all - recently in fact.

The only person who fully believed & supported me (when I told him) was my Dad - He died, 5 years ago.

@Cathyblueknot this next question is something we have heard a few times in the last 2 hours.

Question 5: How do you start to live your life beyond trauma? And how can we manage the ongoing impact of trauma if it comes up again in future?

Again, I want to extend this question to all those following along as well.

It is not necessarily about never experiencing triggers but knowing that when they occur, that this is an experience from the past playing out. It is about using whatever tools you have acquired to calm your nervous system back down, tell yourself that you are safe in the present and that this is a memory from the past. You know what it is and can manage it. It is not about denying the trauma but about living a life worth living with its history.

It is about moving on from the dominance of the past, living as well as possible in the present and being able to envisage a future.

Question 5: How do you start to live your life beyond trauma? And how can we manage the ongoing impact of trauma if it comes up again in future?

Some people may experience post-traumatic growth- a positive type of transformative change after surviving trauma. This is something I’ve experienced myself and it can be deeply fulfilling and moving. I was exposed to unhealthy and abusive relationship dynamics for a lot of my life, and seeing that– and the hurt it caused– made me actively value the opposite in relationships: respect, kindness, and care. As a result I’ve come to form positive relationships and friendships, with zero tolerance for abuse. It’s made me emotional when partners have said they’ve felt safe with me, or when we resolve a conflict though a respectful discussion– it makes me realise I’ve manage to break an intergenerational cycle of abuse.

I wonder how anyone else has managed to live a fulfilling life after trauma, if you've gotten there yet?

That feeling of being "stuck" is important @Bunniekins and @chibam. It sounds like you have been able to relate to each other's experience here

Well, connecting with people - & developing healthy relationships, is very important to recovering from trauma.

Grounding techniques & seeking support (feeling heard) - Is helpful in managing the ongoing impact of trauma.

@Cathyblueknot @Daisydreamer I know probably too big a question but

How do you know then when something is a trigger and not just over reacting or something present so that you can tell yourself it's in the past. Especially if you don't remember much, have that amnesia you mentioned.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Trauma and Recovery// Blue Knot Foundation // Tues 23rd February 2021, 8:00-9:00PM AEDT

@Daisydreamer @Cathyblueknot

I really need to ask this, but am wary of doing so. If needed, delete my question.

What if you really AREN"T safe in the now? What if you are from a DV background (or similar) where the person who harmed you has/ continues to threaten you, and or, your children, with further harm?

When you aren't safe anywhere where someone's innocuous words can let the other person (in a position of power to find you) know where you migth be?

Serious question with serious potential consequences.

but kept getting rejected by my dad as he lived in the same town

it was not until 14 years ago when he passed away that i was free
