Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums. I suppose the appeal for me is that this is anonymous and I can reach out to others in similar situations. So I'll share wirh you my recent struggles with Depression which almost cost me my life. Ten weeks ago my life changed forever when I saw no other option but to drive my car into a tree at 100KMH. I sustained multiple injuries including broken ribs, lacerations to my liver, splean and two broken legs. To be honest it's a miracle I'm still alive - I'm so very grareful. I spent 8 long weeks in hospital and rehab. Thankfully I'm on the road to recovery now and my outlook on life remains positive. I'll admit it wasn't easy to get to this point, but I've made it. I would love to hear your stories and just chat.
@Graeful190. So sorry to hear your depression drove you to attempt. Pleased you are still with us. You must have been feeling very 'dark and alone'. There are so many lost, lonely souls out there who contemplate ending. It always breaks my heart when I hear about these people who are so sad that they attempt. I've 'been there' and to be honest, I will never attempt again. I don't know why you felt so compelled, as though that was all that was left, but I'm so pleased you have shared what you did. Like you, I'm grateful I survived - although at the time, I wasn't. When we attempt and survive, it's like we know we have to live, and enjoy life. When the 'blackness' surrounds, it is hard to see the 'sun' but it is there. It's always there, sometimes we just have to search a bit harder.

Re: Reaching out
Hi @Grateful90, and welcome to the SANE Forums 🙂
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience, it sounds like it has been a really tough journey for you. Seeing how positive you are about the future is such a beautiful and inspiring thing to hear. I'm sure it will give many members on this Forum hope, as many are currently struggling or have loved ones who are. I'm so glad you are around to share your journey with us.
Please feel free to join in on some of the other conversations on the Forums.. In particular the Night Shift thread is pretty popular, as is the Friday Feast (even if it's not technically Friday!).
One other thing, if you haven't seen it yet (they are pretty hidden on the Forums so I wouldn't be surprised!) we have Forum Guidelines to give you an idea of what is allowed/expected by each member on the Forums. When you have time please take a look!

Re: Reaching out
@Grateful90. I'm so glad your attempt wasn't successful and tgat you are here today to tell your story. You're an inspiration. I too have depression and earlier this year had SI (suicidal ideation). I didn't attempt. The thoughts scared me so much, I requested to go to hospital. Best decision ever. Fekt very safe there. Learnt some coping techniques that helped. I have now reached a great point in my therapy with my psychologist where I am truly getting better and can see a bright future ahead for me. I still take the medication I was put on in hospital, where I was allocated a brilliant and supportive psychiatrist. So yes, there is life after a suicide attempt or SI. Life can and does get better. We are both lucky to have had hospitalisation and good therapists to work with. Well done you.

Re: Reaching out
Hi @pip,
Most definitely, that was the darkest time of my life. I hadn't been sleeping well for about two weeks and I just couldn't cope any longer. It seemed at the time to be my only option. The depression completely took over and I felt I had no place to turn. I can relate completely, the first two weeks after my attempt I wished I wasn't there. It wasn't until the medications started to work that things started to improve. I'm glad I found this forum, it's a great way to share with others who have had similar experiences.

Hi @utopia
Thank you. I am so very blessed that I made it - it could have been so much worse. I'm glad you were able to get the help before reaching crisis point. I ended up recieving most of my treatment in a rehab faciltity which I will be forever grateful for.

Re: Reaching out
@Grateful90. With me the worst part was the knowledge that I felt so completely alone, unloved, unwanted. I presume you felt the same. While I was in hospital, I also suffered 'restless leg syndrome'. I was in incredible pain, no AD's or anything. I remember begging the nurse on 'suicide watch' to let me die. I'm so grateful he ignored, and let me talk. I somehow found the strength, once I was released to tell my ex I'd had enough, and if he continued allowing the abuse from his parents to continue, I would walk. His father informed me I should see my local minister, return to AD's, which have since ceased, and just stop being silly. I walked away from ex last year, have a totally new life. The best thing I ever did was to take back my life. I have since vowed and declared to myself I would never punish me again. My ex FIL used to delight in telling me that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. My ex FIL is an absolute pig, he's conceited and chauvinistic. My ex MIL is narc, negative and extremely nasty, ex hubby has inherited father and mothers qualities. Ex is not narc, but he is extremely negative, and conceited. Boy am I glad to be out of that crap. Ex used to love telling me what a lovely, nice-natured man he was. My answer, if you're so nice and lovely to be around, others will comment, you don't have to. Talk about 'I love me'.

Re: Reaching out
Hi @Grateful90
It was over 18 months ago for me now. I didnt even realise it had been that long until i just sat here thinking about it. Things still difficlut but i'm better at reaching out for help before i get to that really awful place. And it was about that time that i realised that i actually could depend on certain people to really be there (mainly my psych and 2 friends). At times though when i get low it so hard to believe that anyone really is there, my mind likes to tell me fibs that i'm completely alone.
My kids are also my life, and i won't do anything that would leave them living with someone who is just.. not capable of raising kids. So now i have a support worker and see my psychologist regularly.
hows your weekend been? its raining and cold here!
