Every year on my brothers birthday I remember what he did that night. That week.

It was suppose to be a magical time. A time to celebrate the birth of my baby brother. Of new life. Of our family expanding. Growing. But instead I remember. I remember what that grown man did to this little girl.

As we sing the song and the candles are blown out my body forces me to remember what I don’t want to remember.

I remember his large hairy body against mine.

I’d only ever felt it before through layers of clothes as he hugged me.

Now his naked body pushed against my innocent flesh.

But I’m not that innocent am I.

I am already tarnished

Already used and abused

Taken advantage of

I was only 12

and he was my step dad

His dead now. Thank god. But do you know what it’s like to see the monster in the eyes of someone you want to love? That every time you see them you are reminded of him.
