Movies about Dissociative Indentity Disorder

Hoping others can introduce me to other movies they have seen on DIDs (or Multiple Personality Disorder as it was once termed) and by discussing our thoughts on these movies we can come to a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

"The Three Faces of Eve" 1957 was an early movie with Joanne Woodward based on a true story and she did a brilliant performance. It also shows the understanding in psychiatry at that time and I had to wonder at the reason given for this woman's dissociation...but that's my thoughts given my own understanding. It also made me think of the effect social repression has on the human psyche and just how much of this woman's 'disorder' was due to the image women had to uphold in order to be treated with respect as a 'good woman'...nowadays we all joke about the 3 aspects of womanhood within just one woman?

"All Around Town" was based on a fictional book by Mary Higgins Clark and had the lot....reason, trigger, treatment and solution. Very much inline with my understanding of DIDs but of course in real life a solution coming from appropriate treatment in the way that occurred in the movie is pretty rare! Have also found DIDs can occur not just to the traumatic experience but the social or parental reaction to the person. A young child who is unable to express themselves to their parents or have the trauma 'verified' and hence that part of them accepted is forced to hide that part of themself.

Should haved checked on Utube to see if these movies are available.....wll do so now for links.

We have DID as well. Unfortunately the last psychologist we saw ended up taking advantage of the young parts and re sexually abused them 😤😖😔

Movies are tricky and there isn't much point making one that really depicts what it's like living with hellish illness. The most realistic is United States of Tara. The only thing that's manly dramatised more is that when Tara loses time her parts are really distinguished and they change clothes. Normally those with DID you cant tell they switch as it's more subtle. Only 6% of those Dx (diagnosed) with DID are like Tara and even Sybil -

We are soo sorry that psychologist took advantage of your young ones, that must be hard for you to reconnect with anyone let alone psychs. Over the years we tend to do things together. My little ones like tea parties, the lads like motor bikes and football. One has done a small cross stitch. I spend most of my time alone. The world is a scary place for us. Going to a Drs app is a night mare. Days before we are is such a mess we count the hours till the app, then pace the floor hours before. Even making a phone call is a major event. We are terrified of rejection, as it has happened throughout life. We are enjoying this site, finding understanding and support.

One is incredibly vulnerable when seeking help Lily.....especially with those who hold some form of power over your life:((..Psychiatrists seem to take the most money. I haven't found one yet who was of any help but have only come across two..Both male and both about power and ego with little interest in doing their job adequately...perhaps the study entailed isn't adequate or the time spent in therapy, the intervals and availability, financial requirements...various reasons I guess...I know had to seek and find the help I needed through sheer determination and desperation! Not everyone can be the mix of trust and professional intimacy required.....and individual personalities do count....many abusers lure one into that same circle of requirements and hard to know the difference..where are our warning signals when we need them?

Have also found with the emphasis now on mental health that way too many young consider they have some form of mental disorder when infact most of their fears are normal anxieties experienced by everyone. Of course one feels anxious about exams or new social engagements, etc....that is life! I often wonder about my children and grandchildren and just how my mind, and therefore life, has affected theirs..

My rational analytical self dominates until the others explode out of hiding in order to express their needs....

Have come into the forum often and just sat staring blankly at the screen, unable to write anything!
Feel like I'm hiding in the shadows peeking out at life and unable to move for fear.....of what?...of whom?
....others?...myself?....the power of authorities?...this open forum?

Having read your comments here have felt a connection with similarities of experiences and thoughts and it's brought about many thoughts and episodes of the past flashing through the kaleiscope of my mental universe.

At a loss to know what comes next in my present life...at the moment I simply feel numb..

Thanks for that Briar.....wondered why your posts were coming up blank.....I saw this forum as a study by a university and students, perhaps even professionals, so entered on that premise....discussing common features and experiences in life and in therapy - I see as a benefit to those reading, no matter what their reasons....there is so much more to learn about the human mind and if those wishing to help or be employed in the future, or are employed in that field now..then so be it.....perhaps keeping our posts up on that basis is the way to go eh?

I think I went numb because i felt like getting far more personal and that should perhaps be a signal to NOT post.....simply chatting with others with similar experiences and hearing their stories on life and therapy and social attitudes gives me added strength....and helps!

I think i would actually feel better if some watcher wanting to learn about DIDs started posting thoughts or questions:).....You say you are a Senior Contributor......how did that come about and what connection does that give you with the facilitators of this forum?

Cheers....looking forward to further conversation about DIDs and this forum and it's uses

p.s. just what experiences have you had on this forum that made you have this uncertainty over safety Briar?

Re: Movies about Dissociative Indentity Disorder

Being such an analysist I have come to the conclusion that DIDS occurs when a young mind is adapting to their world and only after repeated patterns of the traumatised self are being denied....in order to continue existing in their environment of dependency that aspect to themselves becomes automatically hidden .....the major caregivers either cannot or refuse to know or face the reality of the child's experiences (normal loving parents), or horrifically want the denial to occur (abusive caregivers perpetuating the trauma)

The Three Faces of Eve movie just didn't ring true for me....to have that one traumatic experience of being forced to look at a dead relative and kiss it.....leading to distinct 3 separate identities?.....how and why?...doesn't make sense....

Re: Movies about Dissociative Indentity Disorder

@DoneInDialogue, sorry for the slow reply. I haven't been around here much but things are good and stable right now so I'm going to try to tentatively delve back in.

I think the 'senior contributor' is just a measure of how many posts you've made.

There wasn't anything that happened in particular, that made us feel unsafe. I guess it was just, as you mentioned, the feeling that we'd shared too much personal information for a public forum. People who knew us could have identified us - and that would be a problem both in terms of my professional life and particular people who still want to harm us. I guess you just need to be careful.

I haven't seen Three Faces of Eve but the idea that one experience or even one repeated experience would give someone DID doesn't seem consistent with what I've read or heard. It's definitely not been our experience.
