Newbie

Hi, I am new to this group and this is the first time ever that I have actually admitted to myself that I have depression so nobody in my life is aware of my daily struggles. So not sure how this will go for me but I am actually tired of feeling awful everyday. I have heard this is a really good site and the people are really nice so here I am.

Re: Newbie

Hi there @Snow !

First of all, I would like to give you a big warm wlecome to the SANE forums. I hope you find some comfort in connecting with our members.

Wow, how does it feel to finally admit to yuorself that you suffer depression? It's such a courageous thing to do, especially to people you don't know. So if this is the first time you have admitted it, I'm guessing you have never seen a professional before? Like a psychologist?

What's your move from here? What would you like to happen?

You might like to check out some other posts by members with depression- this one is about a member struggling like you, and this one talks about different ways you can help your depression

Looking forward to hearing more about you Snow,

Zahlia

Re: Newbie

Hi and thank you for your warm welcome. I have always worked in the community sector and have been the person who assists people with the difficult stuff so I have always kept how I am feeling to myself because its just not a good look for someone you are trying to help. It just adds to their burden. I have been to counsellors but always about something specific, break up of a marriage, bullying at work. Its not until recently that I realised that those situations were connected by the common thread of depression and when I remember stuff through my childhood it just makes sense. Lately things have been going OK but I just feel bad for no reason. Little things are sending into a downward spiral and for the first time I cry all the time. It is my time to try to tackle this black dog head on.

Hi @Snow

It seems like you have had a recent realisation of your depression and where it has stemmed from?

What do you think you will do to tackle it head on?

Maybe a few of our members who have battled depression can contribute @M12 @Former-Member @BlueBay

Hi @Snow

I love your angel profile pic. 🙂

Welcome to the forums. I'm both happy and sad for you.. On the one hand you've had a realisation about how things are for you that is not so nice, but it also means that you can start working on getting better... Do you think you will get back in touch with one of your counsellors?

This is a great community of people who are kind and supportive of each other, so I'm really glad that you've found this site.

I have major depression that goes up and down with lifes road bumps and road blocks... Sounds like you've been through quite a bit in life also.

Really hope that being here helps and that you get the chance to look around, there are a range of different types of threads from deep and meaningful, questions and chit chat places like the Night Shift.

Re: Newbie

Hi, and thanks for your kind words. Where I live there are no counsellors so I would have to travel 3 hours. I have thought about how I can access one but it isn't that easy on a practical level. It's the ups and downs I find hard but lately the downs are getting longer and I am finding it harder to want to dig myself out of it. What do you do when you are down? It takes a lot of energy doesn't it?

Re: Newbie

Hi @Snow

Sorry that you're so far from that kind of support and help. I was living an hour away from a major town but after a hospital stay I made the decision to move so that I could access support more easily and so could my lil boy who has some special needs.

But even with support i find things lay me low too often. I have started getting out more and exercising with our new dog. (he's also helping me feel a bit safer at home). I'm trying to eat better, though thats a battle, just time wise it's hard. I'm also doing MoodGym, which is an online course of CBT. trying to learn to challenge unhelpful thinking, but finding that really hard at the moment. I also use Lifeline chat sometimes. i'm no good on the phone. I hug my kids, play with them. Try to distract myself and stay in the moment as much as possible. I struggle with dissociation so staying in the present is really important.

Re: Newbie

Hi, I think I might take my dog for a walk tomorrow. She will absolutely love it. Maybe that is where I will start. My diet is really bad atm and I do need to change that. It is hard to want to do anything though. Next week I may check around and see if there is a good GP in town it seems like that might be a good place to start. I have not wanted to go there but I think it makes sense if I want to shake all the horrid stuff. I do find it difficult to stay in the present. Thanks for sharing. Snow

Re: Newbie

Hi @Snow. I'm so impressed that you have admitted here for the first time that you have depression. Well done. That's a great first step.
It must have been so hard keeping that to yourself. I find support by my immediate family and friends to be a significant help for me. I hope over time, you will be able to share your story with those closest to you.
I have depression and anxiety that I'm currently working on with my psychiatrist, my gp & my psychologist. I had PTSD also from my workplace, but have had successful treatment wiyh that. I'm getting closer to feeling back to how I used to be. I have more good days than bad now. It's still a roller coaster at times, but I'm managing those down / negative days using the therapy I have been taught.
I'm lucky to have a great psychologist in my town. My psychiatrist is 2 hours away - so we SKYPE our sessions. I wonder if that may be an option for you with a psychologist.
Talk to your gp & ask for a referral. See if anyone does offer SKYPE sessions.
I'm so glad you found the courage to write on this forum. And I'm sure you will be successful with your treatment.
Coping strategies: walking - even if just a few minutes
keeping my hands busy eg: knitting, other craft, art, puzzles etc - slowly you notice you are focusing on what you're doing & not on your negative self talk.
breathing exercises - just focusing on breathing in & out
relaxation exercises & mindfulness exercises downloaded from the Internet
talking to people on this site or others who don't judge.
I hope this helps @Snow & I wish you all the best

Hi @utopia, thank you for such kind and gentle words and super practical ideas too. I never thought of Skyping, that would be brilliant. Since posting yesterday I have had a real flood of tears probably because I am finally moving not retaining my feelings

. My friend was right this is an amazing safe place and having read through many other posts I know this is a good place for me. Thank you for caring you have no idea how much that means to me. Thank. 🙂
