Just getting it all off my chest

Just getting it all off my chest

I have so much swirling around in my head, I found these forums and just want to put my thoughts somewhere I guess.

I'm about a month and a half out of a long term relationship after being left behind, and it's been really rough on me. I've not been doing a good job of taking care of myself and am also now withdrawing cold turkey from my antidepressants which I'm feeling the effects of. I've been impulsively spending and engaging in reckless behaviour and I'm just doing a lot of self sabotaging and I had barely even realised it until I sat down tonight and reflected on life since the break up.

I'm a little lost, I completely stopped handing in assignments for uni this semester and have accepted failure, and I don't even think I want to go back next semester. I am considering pursuing tafe but feel like I'll just fail at that too. I've attempted so many different courses and now I'm in my mid-twenties with absolutely nothing to show for it and am unemployed.

I am dealing with a very painful type of grief too, the loss of a loved one to suicide. I lost her 18 months ago as of yesterday. It never gets any easier.

I've been out of therapy for a long time and I really do need to give it another shot, but I'm barely functioning. I keep missing my doctor's appointments and all of my commitments in general, I've no idea how I'd even manage to go to therapy consistently. When I've tried in the past I've never been able to. I just have so much pain and trauma to address and work through, and so many skills I need to learn in order to cope.

I have a few different illnesses and it's all just a lot to deal with. All the added life stressors lately have just rendered me completely useless. I feel like such a failure, and I feel such a deep sense of sadness within my soul. I just want to be better.

I am proud of myself for keeping my head above water and getting myself into a new home after having to leave the apartment I was living in with my ex. I'm proud that I'm keeping on despite things being so difficult, and I'm proud that I am still managing to find some happiness amidst the darkness, but I'm just really exhausted and most of the time I don't feel good about myself. And I don't know how to be the kind of person that I want to be.

Thanks for giving me the space to get some of my thoughts down, it helps!

@still_learning Welcome to the forums.

I’m sorry you have lossed a loved one to suicide. @Owlunar @Appleblossom , just tagging members who understand such deep and painful loss. Grief is a huge struggle, and takes time to heal, if it ever does that is.

A relationship breakup is never easy. When my marriage ended, it felt like the end of the world, even though the relationship was a difficult one. Everything changes, even the external friendships you shared as a couple.

I can understand not being able to concentrate or study, but try not to write it off completely at the moment.

Hold on to the things you are proud of, the things you are doing to keep yourself going. I’m proud of you too. I know how hard it is to find a new place to life after a breakup, starting again is never easy.

I’m glad you have found the forums. Many here understand.

Take care.💙💙

A forum tip. The @brings a dropdown , and is how we tag others into conversations.

Hi @still_learning

glad you found this place and hope you find some healing and support around.

Relationshio breakdowns are not easy, I’m a few years out from my marriage ending and it’s been really difficult. I’ll echo what @Maggie said, so much changes, including other relationships. I’m still grieving some of them.

Good on you for being able to move out and set up again, that’s an achievement. Hope you are taking the time to make it feel like home. That’s one thing that I have enjoyed.

I don’t really have much to add, but please take care of yourself and reach out for help and speak with your doctor before things spiral more.

Re: Just getting it all off my chest

Welcome to the forums @still_learning - I am very glad you found us

Losing someone to suicide is very painful - among life's worst things I truly believe - and it takes time to find a way to live with such a loss and 18 months is not long. I lost my son to suicide a long time ago and a cousin more recently and I know - it really blows the mind and I am sorry you have to go through this too

Also - you have been in a relationship that has failed recently - what a downer - and this year as been a year like no other so no wonder you feel as if you are losing the plot - life must be a day-to-day struggle for you and you do need help with this - it's not a good time to go cold-turkey on your antidepressents either - you know the circumstances and I think you need to see your doctor about this because some medication might help

It's my suggestion that you defer your studies at university for this year and pick it up when you are able - there is no shame in that - no failure - I was studying part time when my son died and I eventually graduated with honours - so it is possible - but you need a break right now I am sure

My studies kept me going - I have a degree to my name - and this knowledge - what I learned - has kept me going through difficult times and it's certainly worthwhile

I wonder how many people really feel as if they have achieved much in their lives when they are in their 20s - wow - I have done so much more since - live is worth the battle and in later years there is something worth having - right now you are in the middle of it and I know - where does the easy part being? How long does the grief last? When will I feel better? - I know - the questions are easy and the answers evasive - you are not alone - there are other people here who have survived the loss of a loved one to suicide and know the pain of it all and the why why why too - so you are not alone

Keep in touch - you have taken a big step to get here and we are glad you have

Re: Just getting it all off my chest

Hi @still_learning just wanted to let you know that I read your post.

You have a lot going on at the moment. No wonder you're exhausted.

It took me a long time to recover from the end of my marriage.

One thing about grief and loss I read that helped me is that you don't get over it, it doesn't go away, but it can change from being all consuming to something that you grow around and integrate into your life. The idea comes from Lois Tonkin.

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Re: Just getting it all off my chest

Hey there @still_learning you must be going through such a rough time at the moment and yet you are showing strength in sharing your feelings id like to make a suggestion that may sound a little strange but anyway are you possibly able to let yourself have a tempory break from studying in order to give yourself a break and possibly get some support so that you could go on a holiday for a bit maybe to help with a change of setting somewhere you could unwind and have some time for you ,possibly holiday with one or two close friends you may have that you could just spend time looking after you especially while going through so much please take care LostAngel
