Not sleeping at night

Not sleeping at night

Does anyone who suffers from anxiety tend to have anxiety attacks at night? I'm not thinking of anything or stressing out. But it seems to only happen when I try to go to sleep its left me exhausted 😞 any tips or tricks would be awesome.

Hi Flower 88, Food wise, try eating as natural a foods as possible (if your not already doing so), no coffee after lunch time as it gets the heart going. try doing some relaxing exercises, breathing exercises before going to bed ( google relaxation techniques for stress relief) keep away from electrical devices at least 1 hour before going to bed. Remember relaxing is not watching tv per say but doing some quiet that keeps you in the here and now and think happy thoughts. achcohol can keep you from having a good night sleep too. you will know when you feel uneasy and try these things through the week and it may help you. Have a chat to your doctor too he/she may have some good Ideas.

Hi @Flower88,

Thanks for your post!

Anxiety can affect sleep in a lot of different ways, even if you might not be worrying or stressing about anything specifically, you can still be "wound up" (so to speak) in other ways, for example, you might have a lot of muscle tension, or feel on edge and restless. As @Dogman suggested, there are some really good strategies to deal with these kinds of symptoms, such as breathing techniques, or progressive muscle relaxation. I've provided a couple of links below to some resources you might find helpful.

Panic Stations

Calming Technique

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Sleep Hygiene

Insomnia and Your Thinking

Making sure you get regular exercise can also really help with sleep. Getting your energy out during the day often means it's not hanging around at night when you are trying wind down and sleep!

Have a go with a few different strategies and see what works for you. If you're finding that things aren't improving after trying some of these, it could be worth having a chat to your doctor or a psychologist to see if they can help.

All the best,
supernova.

Re: Not sleeping at night

I have a night time ritual - I do it 9:30 every night. I use to have a camomile or passion fruit tea with honey .... But EVEN BETTER is the ancient Ayurvedic remedy of Golden Milk
1/2 Tspn tumeric and Half of cinnamon , 1/4 of cardamom and ginger. A good grind of black pepper, a Tspn of coconut oil and a heaped Tspn of honey. Into a cup of milk (I ise almond & macadamia it's less Cals - but you can use any milk.dronk this 1hour before you intend to sleep. You may need to persist to begin with but this drink is amazing.
