Too Afraid to Leave the House

Too Afraid to Leave the House

I've been dealing with BPD for several years, but lately it's flared up and been really bad. I've been having suicidal thoughts AND I just got dumped by my long-term SO and for some reason all of a sudden I'm too afraid to leave the house? This has never been an issue before and it's affecting my work life as well as the fact that I was supposed to have a psychologist appointment today which I cancelled because the thought of leaving the house made me sick. I can't tell if I'm too afraid to see him or what, as this is totally new to me. Please help?

Hi @helpmeifyoucan

I’m really sorry to hear that things are so difficult for you at the moment. Breaking up with your long term partner is a huge deal... no wonder you're feeling so overwhelmed. When you've been with someone for a long time, it can feel bizarre and really isolating to suddenly not be in that relationship anymore. Can I ask, did the break up take you by surprise or have you known it was on the horison for a while?

Having suicidal thoughts can be really scary and overwhelming, so it’s really important to speak with someone. You have shown great courage in reaching out for help & I encourage you to keep doing that 🙂 If you continue to feel really low today, you can contact one of the following services for more support. You don’t deserve to go through this alone.

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat
Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling

You could also ring your psychologist and speak with them over the phone if you don't have it in you to go to your appointment today. Sometimes just talking things over on the phone can really help. Perhaps you could book in to see them tomorrow or the next day, whenever you're feeling more up to it.

If you can't leave the house today, that's okay. Maybe you just need a day to take stock and rest? Perhaps you could use the rest of the day to do something loving and nurturing and just take care of yourself today. When I'm having a low day, I like to have a hot shower, get into bed, and fall asleep watching youtube videos 🙂 How about you?

I know you're feeling really alone right now, as I said that's understandable. But remember you're not alone - we are here for you as a community. You're welcome to keep hanging out on here for some more comfort and distraction if that's helpful. Take care.

Hey Mosaic, thanks for taking the time to respond. This breakup kind of came out of nowhere, and I still don't entirely feel like I know why. I think everything has just hit me with really bad timing and all.

Re: Too Afraid to Leave the House

Hey @Former-Member thanks for checking in. I'm feeling a little better, and was actually able to go back to work today (!!!). I'm still feeling like everything is a bit too much, but I did have a few friends of mine actually come and check if I was ok, and they have been reaching out trying to help me as much as they can. I'm confident that I can get through this, and am even meeting with my former SO tomorrow for lunch to try and get a bit of closure to feel kind of ok again.
