Re: Why isn't prevalence of depression dropping

@Appleblossom. A very interesting chat about Mental Health. But I found it rather ..... the same..... experts talking about what is needed ..... no politicians or general public screaming to get the funding.
We can't take finding away from those already sick. But shit, maybe there needs to be a huge funding shift to get every child taught how to be resilient. How to cope with stress.
Then there also needs to be extra funding for those on the edge. Mums who are depressed - but expect they should be. People who don't believe in it "I just need to get on with it'. People whose family do not want treatment. People scared of the stigma. People who worry they will loose their job, family, partner.
I can't see a government going to the spending lengths needed to fix this crisis.
And then they didn't discuss another reason more people may be getting sick. FEAR. We have a financial crisis, jobs are disappearing, crimes against women, migrabts taking our jobs, trrrorism, etc etc.
There is just so much negative, demoralising news everywhere. Kids / teenagers are listening to this. It's a self feeding circle.
Wow. I obviously had to get that off my chest.

Xxxx!

It doesn't go down, because the system of health care still emphasises that the patient is responsible for their betterment at end of day. A society that stigmatises and margianalises us is not being held accountable.

Money is sunk into awareness campaigns aimed at sufferers, as though we don't know we're suffering. Money isn't invested in telling society, schools, employers, doctors, that they are systemically part of the problem and they need to stop passing the buck back to us.

Re: Why isn't prevalence of depression dropping

Personally I believe the 'increase ' may be a result of more people becoming aware that the are ir maybe depressed or anxious leading to more people taking the plunge and seeking help. As society becomes more aware of and marginally feeling less stigma about relatively common conditions they find the courage to face the fear of seeking assistance. This in and of itself can create a situation where conditions that were previously hidden are now appearing to have become more prevalent.

Certainly the global economy and unrest, the ever present terrorism is providing understandable triggers for development of anxiety and depression.

As mentioned by Tony Jorm mentioned the need to help people young and old develop skill sets that promote resilience will help in part to reduce the impact of the tough times our world is facing. Having the tools at hand to allow people to bounce back is one way to possibly lessen the severity of mental health issues. No it is not a cure all but I believe it is something that can make some differences in a positive and non intrusive way.

Re: Why isn't prevalence of depression dropping

Emotional intelligence has been devalued for too long too. I worry so much that the long-term effects of discipline for sake of discipline is having. Especially as society gets more enclosed, thanks to its misguided fears (not allowing people to mingle with other people, in particular children).
My girls rarely get a chance to socialise with peers outside of formally arranged and directed activities. And my eldest is now 3 and a half. You go to a playground and are lucky to find parents that will allow kids to play with other kids, even there. It concerns me greatly.

Ah hah @Sehnsucht
I've had the same problem this afternoon and this evening. It hasn't been a problem previously. Gives me a message about Java Script but nothing has been changed today.
Go figure. It is annoying though.

@Appleblossom @Kurra @Sehnsucht. It's an interesting topic. Maybe one that the Government and Medical Professionals need to discuss more

Re: Why isn't prevalence of depression dropping

Thank you for your interest and comments. @utopia @Kurra and @Sehnsucht

Yes, I know for many the issues are the same.

Yes social general unrest, relational breakdown, general stress and the pressures and pace of life seem to add to the problem.

I also think that a lot of people experiencing MH issues are MORE responsible (in the sense of experiencing and trying to manage consequences) than many individuals at large in our communities.

So it fitted a sad ironic streak in me to post this article in a discussion called "Something's not Right." The older I get the more I believe that the issues are a 2-way street. It is not just the individuals labelled that have "the problem" but society needs to carry more responsibility.

It is not just about throwing more money at the system. It is how it is spent and targeted.

Re: Why isn't prevalence of depression dropping

You're right @Appleblossom. I think this is an issue that relates strongly to our sense of community and society as a whole. When society places more emphasis on economics than social well being, an increase in mental health is sure to follow
