Depression or Circumstances?

Depression or Circumstances?

I always find it hard to tell if it is my illness or my circumstances that make me upset. I have had a lot going on lately particularly with stress at work and conflict with my partner. Does anyone have any ideas on how to differentiate if the circumstances need changing eg partner or job, or if it is just the illness?

Re: Depression or Circumstances?

Dear Nikolai. One of the hardest things we try to do is separate our emotions. I suggest you make up a two lists. Give one the title: Partner. The second one call it: Depression. With the first list, write down everything about your partner that affects your mood, happiness, anger/frustration, sadness, impatience etc. Remember, you are responsible for your mood, not your partner, but his actions affects your mood. Next list, write down if you can, when you're depressed, why you feel depressed. Is it your job that makes you down, does it seem more so when you have conflict at home. If you try to discuss conflict at work, with your partner, how does he react? Does he listen, offer you a shoulder, or does he 'roll his eyes' and say 'here we go again'. If this happens, have a think about your options. Options are difficult choices, but remember, these are just thoughts. Depression seems to take over our minds when other problems invade. If we have conflict at home or work the depression seems to 'feed' on our conflict making it seem worse. You may find a change of job is the right move. Whatever you decide about your home life is something only you can decide.

Thank you so much @pip that is a really helpful response! I'm definitely going to start my lists and taking note of what affects me. I really appreciate your help.

Re: Depression or Circumstances?

I can really relate to this question, @Nikolai. I've had an especially tough 6 months, and so it seems logical that my depression would get worse over that time. So do I just wait it out and see if my health gets better as circumstances ease? Or should I continue to look into additional treatment, because a) life is regularly hard and b) the things I've experienced aren't nearly as tough as those that a lot of others go through (for instance, I haven't lost any limbs, or been made homeless), and people cope with those things all the time?

Getting perspective from people outside me has been somewhat helpful. They remind me that anyone who has experienced what I've experienced in the last 6 months would be struggling, even if they didn't suffer from clinical depression. But then I just keep thinking about all the people who have had much more terrible things happen to them, but carry on. I feel like the degree of my debilitation is not commensurate with what's been going on for me.
