Re: I want to know who you are

Funny this is something I revisit constantly. I have these vague childhood memories I cling to of who I Was! but now I've been living with chronic illness and still I'm only young-it has robbed me of my identity & I find myself asking this same question. Frustrated in life... SOMETHING isn't right. The future? Hope? God? Money is slim but also not an issue as such...my friendships are steady but I don't feel I'm servicing them enough. Family - I miss them. Quality time! That's more to the point. I'm creative - as a musician I'm not getting much time for this.., and it's eating me. Do you have a hobbie or passion?

Re: I want to know who you are

Hi @Samxox

Who am I? I am my unique characteristics - something we all share.

I am my core values and my choices. My passions, my strengths and my weaknesses. I am what I choose to think upon and do; what I offer/give to others, myself and the community at large. I become truly me when I tap into what I am here for and pursue it without giving up or only looking for self gratification. I did this after coming through some dark and empty life stages questioning exactly what you are and growing in compassion. I found me through the latter as this guided me to growing within becoming a better person.

I loose myself when worries, grief, anxiety, stresses and self doubt overwhelm and I don't try my best. I need to take a bigger leap of faith then to keep moving forward.

But simply I am.

Re: I want to know who you are

@Samxox. This is what my psychologist is asking me now & I don't know. Before my workplace injury - I knew what I liked doing - I enjoyed growing fruit and vegetables. I was planning on getting chickens. I was looking forward to decorating my house. But then I got stuck in stress and depression and anxiety. I really have lost myself.
I used to love the job I did, I took pride in it. I can't do that sort of work again.
So I'm on a big learning curve with my psychologist along for the ride.
I hope you find what you are missing.

You may be a little lost but you've not lost out entirely. I'm soooo sooooo sorry you're having to deal with this. I personally relate to almost all that you said. As nutso as this sounds -I started doing positive affirmations and self talk. Say it out loud cos you can fool your own subconscious mind. Even if you feel crappy- "I'm going to have a good day today" aaaaah "I'm feeling motivated" (don't say NOT) "I can do this" "I've got this" "what a stunning day" and soon enough you experience these micro bursts of energy and comfort even. They get better as you act in accord and begin achieving little things. It's just personally what's helped me immensely - please don't take this as imposed views. I hope your day is exceptional in some way 😄 and I feel for you. Keep strong! This too CAN pass

Haha hi I Am ... RG here... Well with all your unique complexities ... And perhaps what you perceive to be inadequacies- I think you're wonderful. Amazing human creation... You are wonderfully made. We may face problems even constantly - but you can overcome then. These issues are often magnified by our own minds eye... But you keep moving forward cos YOU are You exist and I love the way you expressed that. Today (thanks to you) I AM going to draw on Just that!

Re: I want to know who you are

It is something I've been thinking about for a long time. It is one of the big questions we face in our lives.

WHO AM I?

I have often defined myself by roles I've played - daughter, sister, loving girlfriend, wife, mother, lover, my career choice, crafter etc. I realised several years ago that they are things I do not who I am.

I am changing. I am stubborn. I am loving. I am impatient. I am positive. I am grateful. I am lonely. I am many qualities and they shift as things around me change and I adapt. I learn new skills and let go others. I develop new qualities in myself and let go others. At the end of the day I AM. At that is the best any of us can be! It is hard to get to the bottom of just exactly who I am but I am working on it and myself as best I can. One day I will truly know and accept who I am - good and bad!

I wish you well on your journey!

Re: I want to know who you are

What an insightful post. @Selene

People thought "the soul" had a quintessential quality ... that defined us .. apart from the things we do ...

My daughter took me to see the movie "21 grams" ...

I think there is an emotional charge we carry around with us ... that may often reflect some aspects of us and our experience .. but that we are all at least a little bit broken .. and a little bit good.

Re: I want to know who you are

I survived a very abusive relationship and escaped 4 years ago but I still struggle to find my identity. I truly understand to some degree what you are feeling, I know no one ever feels the exact same so I'll just say i understand to a degree. 🙂 I went to uni and am about to start my final year doing a counselling bachelor and I still feel like I can't do it because I know in my heart i won't be able to help others if I can't even help myself, but I keep pushing forward because I want to be able to say 'I got a bachelor'.

I've done soo many courses ranging from positive parenting to positive thinking and planning for life etc and I'm still as low as.m I have ever been.

I have volunteered at a few different organisations to get that apparent feeling of 'giving back'.

I eat raw food mostly with the occasional chicken and fish and I exercise daily, sleep pretty well and am healthy in general but my mental illness makes me feel I am constantly sick.

I hope I find out who I am supposed to be one day.

Re: I want to know who you are

@Appleblossom, thank you for your lovely remark about my post.

I haven't seen the movie 21 grams but I will find it and watch it.

The movie Seven Pounds is in a slightly similar vein and I found it moving.

I agree with your last sentence very much..... I am a little broken and a little battered and a little good and stronger than I sometimes realise.
