Something’s not right

Am I the one in the wrong?

Am I the one in the wrong?

For several years now, I've been volunteering as Secretary for a local organisation. The old committee members have from the very beginning attended every meeting to point out mistakes, shortcomings, and failings that they perceive I or another member has committed. However, this group is simply an information only type of organisation and it isn't really one where we are expected to know every person in the neighbourhood by name, know when they pass away, etc. But these old committee members keep making out as if I have failed in some way. One lady thought she had cancer and didn't want to go out doing the annual collection. This lady didn't say anything about her illness to the committee or to me. The only thing she said was that she was too busy. Well, we are all busy people and we still go out and slog through the neighbourhood asking for donations. This lady got so upset that at the next meeting she and her husband thought it appropriate to humiliate me, my husband and the committee because we publicly apologised for not knowing she was sick. They were also denigrating the fact that we wrote a year-to-date activities page to say what was done and who helped. They accused us of not being fair by not naming everyone who volunteers. But truth be told we named everyone who volunteered for those activities. If she wanted her name in lights, then maybe she should have volunteered. Later I was talking with a Police Officer and she came up crying and told me that I should know her better and made a total and complete fool of me, right there for no reason.

Much later I had to call her for something and we got into a conversation about that day. She swears I don't understand her but she knows me better than I know myself apparently. She told me that I was arrogant, thought only of myself, and wanted to be in the lime light all by myself. I informed her that she had me all wrong, that all I ever wanted was to volunteer and do whatever I could for the neighbourhood. To this day she still maintains that I am the one in the wrong and acts as if I am cold and heartless even after finding out that her "Cancer" was benign and therefore not really a problem after all. This old committee member group of bullies just won't move on. They seem to think that they were the best there was ever going to be and with every success we have, they are there to point out our mistakes, failings, etc. In all truth, these failings and mistakes they point out aren't actually mistakes and failings at all. These people perceived the local organisation to be more than what it actually was ever meant to be. We have just brought it back to what the mission statement says it's supposed to be and they don't like the changes.

So am I a cold-hearted bitch or is this lady off her rocker?

Hi @Busylady01

Wow, sounds like you have gone through quite a lot lately! I can imagine you would be feeling pretty overwhelmed by all thats happened. I'm curious, how does all of this make you feel? What impact does it have on you?

Hope your well,

Zahlia

This all makes me feel unliked and unappreciated. I know these people are just jealous of successes and forward progress, but it still makes me dread meetings. I've never once had a loud outburst at them like they have me. I never once told them they were failures. But that's what I get from them and unless they move out of the neighbourhood or pass away, they aren't likely to stop any time soon.

Hi @Busylady01

Volunteering can be an immensely rewarding experience however it appears your contribution is not appreciated appropriately. I would recommend that you look for somewhere else where you can make a contribution thst is rewarding for you and appreciated by those you are assisting. As a volunteer you can walk away at any time knowing that you have done your best.

@Busylady01 You dont sound coldhearted at all.

I have noticed older women can be precious about all sorts of things that dont mean much to me .. like their age, their health, which bits of their health are appropriate to speak about and which hush-hush. I think you could be fair to think of her as a difficult old lady.

If you want to stay and can get behind the mission statement, stick with polite, no nonsense, brisk attitude and dont internalise community politics .. get cannier about it.

I was actually glad a few years ago when there were a few more laws passed about community associations. It frightened me at first as I am afraid of legalities I dont understand, but I think it was put in place to try and ensure more accountability in our pluralist society.

I spoke about it in my church .. trying to clarify expectations and roles .. eg we have honarary, paid and unpaid members ...

I was very distressed in this church because of bully power games but also felt no place left on the planet to go ... and there were a few good people, so I stayed.

I had really weird VALIDATING WooWoo experiences. The Holy Spirit or God .. I dont know ...

Eg the monastery brought in a top 'management consultant' to sort out the politics in the choir about 2009 and I knew her parents and cousins from when I was a child in the 70s. Her dad owned a petrol station where my little brother worked ... which in these days would be child exploitation .. but he was glad of the job and experience etc etc. I was offsider to her cousin for the 5 most stable years of my childhood.

It was weird as I was grounded in similar values to her and knew all about her ... though only knew of her indirectly ... it was not in the name that I realised it as she had married ... it was in her facial features ... so I gently enquired if she knew any B**** and she laughed and it was her family. The rest of the choir was a bit frightened by her involvement and upset by our familiarity but I could not help that ... their problems ... their guilts ...she was very professsh ... no harm done. Havent seen her since ... just old school contacts that come and go.

So my advice .. stick it out if it gives you meaning and you can cope ... if it is too unrelenting ... go elsewhere .. but the issue may reoccur in another organisation with different faces and names.

Good Luck

@busylady101. I think you were very rude and condescending to this lady. And I don't think you want to hear it. It is none of your business whether she has cancer or not or if she is just busy. Who do you think you are to insinuate that she had no problems because the cancer was benign. Seriously.

Re: Am I the one in the wrong?

@busylady101 & anyone else I may have offended. I am in the wrong because I judged you. And I don't have the right to do that - I do not know your hole story. And we don't do judgement on this site with anyone.
I appologise

Re: Am I the one in the wrong?

@Busylady01The "Off her rocker" comment is a bit harsh and I tried to suggest a gentler way without actually calling you out. It adds to stigma without adding to understanding.

Sometimes I speak in such a way ... as it is very much part of the Aussie patois ... previously I was a bit detached from my Aussie side as dad had died and had no relations, BUT mostly I do it referring to MYSELF ... or about affectionate things ... at least in my mind and heart ... like science boffins as science nuts etc. Not malicious or trivialising of MI issues ... but trying to lighten up things occasionally. Anyway that is my intention .. not sure if I succeed.

That is the reality that we make mistakes ... in society ...we cant know the background of everyone we meet. IMPOSSIBLE .. so we have to keep open and compassionate ear and heart ... in my book.

My personal presumptions were about how easy everyone else had it ... til I had to look at deep pain and suffering of individuals who had stable backgrounds and money and family ... I still have my biases ... but I have tried to adjust my thinking attitudes to be more inclusive ... up the ladder.

Re: Am I the one in the wrong?

I'm thinking you didn't understand the whole message or that I didn't fully express myself. The lady in question has been a right pain in my backside for the past two years. Every now and again she would throw a spanner in the works and say she was busy and couldn't do something the group really needed. So I would give up yet another weekend doing it in her stead. One day the annual collection was taking place and we all had our streets to do and she calls up and says she busy, no other explanation. Just like all the times before. Now this lady told the local Councillor and he sent flowers apparently, a couple of other neighbours etc. At the next meeting, this lady was thoroughly upset with me because I didn't volunteer yet again to do the work she had agreed to do and publically condemned me for not knowing that her comment 'busy' meant she had cancer. Now if she had of told me the same as she had told others, I would have bent over backward to help her, but she didn't.

I understand that I should not have mentioned the fact that she was later found to be benign or the question of whether I was in the wrong or her off her rocker and I apologise for that. I'm new to this forum and am learning what can and cannot be said.

There are group hitch-hikers ... who dont actually pull their weight ..

Groups are really difficult and often stretch our reserves of patience. If her behaviour is that bad and you want to persist with the work ... it will probably become obvious to the others over time .. and the hold of the old guard will probably diminish.

What if you play the what if game? What if this lady is threatened by your energy and the only way she can keep a hold is to sap your energy. What if your super human self could say Lady I need your help you have been involved in this much longer than me. You have more experience, why dont we work together. And mean it. Dont rely on her. Dont expect anything from her. Have a backup plan or person to step in when u know now that she is very likely to let you down. What if some of the old ways did work. What if the new stuff is the fertiliser that the oldstuff needs to grow. What if
