Hospital

Hospital

Hello all,

If anyone had told me a year ago, I would be in a mental hospital now, I would have laughed out loud. I always had everything under control - how could anyone think differently.

Here I am, through my first week in hospital. It is a nice private hospital and I cannot complain. I've gotten used to the rules and routines and try to learn and relax.

I don't have many visitors, because I haven't told many people where I am. Sometimes I wonder if it would be better to let everyone come, let them see it's not a loony bin, not one flew over the cookoos nest... There is so much stigma attached, I would actually have a chance to make a difference.

But to whose expense? Have you talked about your mental illness? I would really like to make the world a better place and remove stigma, but on the other hand I don't think I am strong enough to pull through with it.

Re: Hospital

Hi @Former-Member

The trouble is that the stigma is in other people's minds and there is nothing at all we can do about that

If you want to ask someone to visit check first - with yourself - if you are okay with this

Those of us who have been in private clinics know it is a safe place to heal - and that's pretty much what happens - we find out what's wrong and get it attended to - just as it is done in a surgical hospital or acute medical

You are sounding better - and you are not in a mental hospital - which to me sounds like a contradiction in terms - and you will feel better

Re: Hospital

@Former-Member. I've never kept my depression a secret and after my workplace injury , I have also explained my anxiety and ptsd and how it affects me. Friends needed to know abouut my panic attacks and what can trigger them. My last panic attack was in Feb/Mar this year and i was at my best friends house with some of her extended family. I had the sensation of not being able to breath -this is where I struggle the most. My friend was inside. We were outside and hef family rushed around me trying to help but making things worse. My friend came out - told everyone to go and sit down and then directed me - without touching me to a private part of the garden. All the while whispering 'breath, that's it, just breath. This will pass. I'm here. Breath.'
She had listened when previously I had discussed what to do if ......
There are some people like my friend and my son who recognise that I know what works best for me.
Some people could not cope watching someone have an attack or they will interfere and try and takd over.
When I was thinking about going to The Melbourne Clinic , my best friend looked up the website. She took an interest. Those are the people who will visit you in hospital & bring their kids. They know it is simply a hospital.
There are other people who don't want to know about MI. They may have memories of a relative who was removed from home years ago and never mentioned again. They may never be able to learn.
Invite those who will be good for you.

Again, I choose who to tell.

@Former-Member
You are sounding like you're getting there. It takes time effort and patience.
@Decadian I agree with what you say that flower needs to check with herself first whether she wants visitors or not.
@utopia you are so lucky to have good friends.

Re: Hospital

Hi @utopia@BlueBay@Former-Member

@utopia's idea of telling her friend what to do if..................is excellent - anyone can have a panic attack - if someone hasn't they just need to wait - whether or not they ever mention it is up to them but I am sure it's impossible to get through life without feeling pressure getting out of control from time to time

Of course - some panic attacks are worse than others

It's a long time since I was in The Melbourne Clinic but I was a frequent flyer back in the dark days - and it's a clinic - a place where people go to get the appropriate treatment - and it was not at all a scary place - I was surprised the first time I went there - rooms with tables and chairs - really comfortable - plenty of room - I was surprised - I think it was pretty new then

I am going to have to have a look on the internet to see what it is like now - so many years have passed

And also - as @utopia says - we can choose how much we tell other people - and it is a terrible sorrow that people regard what is termed MI (what I prefer to called Mental Discomfort) in a Jekyll and Hyde format - a madman making himself worse - or Victor Frankenstein creating a monster - or other literature

Certainly there are some conditions - pyschosis and schizophenia that are a lot more serious - and maybe require different situation for treatment - that are harder for people to understand - I don't understand them -

But most people go to clinics for treatment that is part of an on-going process of improving the state of their lives after various kinds of emotional trauma

I am glad @BlueBay and @Former-Member that you are both having this treatment right now and of course you will be up and down and all over the place. Imagine if you'd had surgery - you would be in hospital on a drip and having injections and getting your BP taken every so often but a machine that squishes your arm - and then - dressing on where ever - and maybe confined to bed with the sides up -

No one would think that was strange - after all - the treatment is appropriate

So this is what's happening - you have all the treatment for how far along in your journey you are

And I wish both of you a good sleep and a peaceful night and I am glad both of you are where you can talk to the staff when you need to

Re: Hospital

Hi @Former-Member @Decadian @BlueBay. Yes I'm very lucky to have my best friend. And I also have other friends that wanted to visit me in hospital but I said no. Too far for them to travel. So we kept in ph contact. I have other friends who don't understand at all. "What are you still on WorkCover. But I saw you at the market. Smiling". I love that comment. I try not to judge their comments. They are who they are & they're unlikely to change. They are friends for other reasons.
I hope hospital is starting to feel like a safe place to let your guards down.
I think @Former-Member & @BlueBay that you are both amazing women. Putting your health first. Seeking extra help when needed.
I hope your journey becomes easier over time

Re: Hospital

Hi All,

It's great to read about your own experiences and your view of the world. So if I'm not in a mental hospital @Decadian... I just looked it up on the Internet, they just say clinic. Anyway the people that have visited and the photos I have sent to my family show them it is a nice and homely place, it is safe and there is a lot of staff to look after us.

I am actually losing my own stigma about mental illness, I have met (in person) people with bipolar 1 and I don't know what other problems, but all of us have good and bad days. There are no severe cases here, there is no lock up unit. The first step in healing is probably accepting the illness and removing the stigma in my own head.

i hope you all have a good day!

Re: Hospital

Hi @Former-Member

I am interested in your comments too - and the Melbourne Clinic is a place for people to go when their life becomes too much for them - and it is society's illess that the people with PTSD, anxiety, depression and other similar disorders have this stigma attached

After WW1 the medical profession began to view what is now knows as PTSD as shell-shock. In this day and age it is no surprise that men suffer when they have been to war - and it is in watching programmes such as M A S H that through the comedy we can see the darker side of war briefly - but also now we know more about what happens to people after a prolonged period of stress - and are treated likewise

And you write that the first step in healig is probably accepting the illness and removing the stigma in your own head - probably true - I did that a long time ago - and when I remember that time in my past it was hard to get through the darkenss to the light - and for encouragement - I did.

The weather is getting me down - but this is the way it has always been - I have Seasonal Affective Disorder in a big way right now - but if honesty prevails - so do a lot of people

I hope you feel better soon - and you are allowed to smile even when on work cover

Re: Hospital

Thinking of you all. Hope you're having a nice weekend.

Have some home leave today and tomorrow - it's nice to be home but I am tired from a really tough afternoon yesterday and prob suffer from some of the after effects of the meds I had to take. Somehow seems surreal that I have to be dropped off again later today. Good thing is there is nothing I have to do at home apart from relax and enjoy.

Hugs to all x
