A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

As a young child and into my teens, I have vivid memories of a violent and abusive father. Dad was essentially a good man and worked hard to provide the necessities for his young family. He was also a very proud man, and it was hard to make ends meet as a lowly paid manual worker. He was by nature a quiet, shy and gentle man with a lovely dry sense of humour. But alcohol turned him into a violent abusive drunk, with a quick and volatile temper. Mum would tell me and my siblings to go to our room whenever this happened. I know she tried her best to shield us from the violence as much as she could. But it's hard to miss the shouting and the smashing of items as arguments raged. Our tiny 4-roomed home allowed no escape from what was going on. We all knew not to comment afterwards on Mum's frequent and obvious injuries.

As a pre-teen, I experienced the heartbreak of losing a much loved uncle via a tragic shooting accident. Soon after, I lost a school friend to drowning in a farm dam, and a fellow classmate to an accident in a grain silo.

In my senior high school years, my best friend died in a car accident, 2 additional classmates died in separate car accidents the following year. All this while still at school.

When I started going out on dates (as a young and naive 19yo) the first boy I ever went out with was critically injured in a random attack in a hotel. The second man I dated, died in a work accident while carting hay. My next boyfriend lasted a little longer, I dated him for a year before he too died - in another car accident. I was devastated.

When I was in my late 20's, my Mums youngest brother died at the hands of his then girlfriend. When in my early 30's, my Dads youngest brother (and my favourite uncle), committed suicide.

It was in Feb 1996, when in my mid 30's, that I was beaten and sexually assaulted in my own home, by a former friend and someone I had once trusted. This caused major trauma and it took a very long time for me to recover from, both physically and emotionally. I could not escape the fear of it happening again, nor the horror of it all. Feeling vulnerable and unsafe, I desperately needed to escape to hide, so I sold my home a few months later and moved. Still trying to escape I sold and moved again, this time to another state. I could not allow this person to find me again. The mental trauma of this violent rape continues to affect me badly every year.

A couple of years after the assault, I entered into what turned out to be an abusive and highly volatile relationship. I married someone just like my Dad. My husband is essentially a good man, but has a traumatic past himself, and is an alcoholic and a narcissist. I guess that old saying, that you end up marrying someone just like your Dad, is true.

In my early 40's my remaining best friend from high school died on the operating table during what should have been a very simple routine minor procedure. I'm godmother to her children. She had fled a violent marriage when her kids were young, and had essentially been in hiding since that time.

Around the same time, the husband of a workmate of mine died in a freakish workplace accident. My 24yo nephew was seriously injured in a mining accident which resulted in permanent injuries to both legs which will limit him for life.

Our neighbour from the adjoining farm to ours, committed suicide during the hardship of a prolonged drought in the mid 2000's. Our two families had been quite close, and this hit the very small rural community very hard.

I was in my 50's when my youngest brother was seriously injured in a fatal car accident. He was very lucky to survive and, five years on, he continues to have serious ongoing physical and mental health challenges. Tragically his young daughter died in the accident. This major loss affected my whole family very badly, and marked the rapid decline of my Mums health. The loss of her only granddaughter, whom she was very close to, broke her heart. My beloved Mum died just over 12 months ago.

After so many of my friends and family died or were permanently injured in freakish circumstances, I started isolating myself to a large degree - cutting myself off from any remaining friends. In my 20's and 30's I never went on dates - no more boyfriends for me. Therefore no more losses? I never permitted myself to get close to any new friends. I figured I was cursed somehow and caused all these tragic things to happen to so many around me. It seemed I wasn't safe to be around. As tragedies continued to happen throughout my life, it served to reinforce that thinking.

Working life ... I experienced a workplace accident when in my late 30's which resulted in permanent physical impairment and ongoing chronic pain. In my 50's I was targeted by my workplace manager after calling out a case of workplace bullying against a fellow worker. I became the target of sustained harassment and bullying as a result. It became more than I could handle, so I resigned.

Given my physical limitations and ongoing pain levels, I sought and found part time work. I worked with a lovely bunch of people and thoroughly enjoyed the work for about 6 years in total. Unfortunately I was forced to leave work a few years ago due to carer responsibilities. Leaving work and being stuck at home every day was a major adjustment for me. I miss the mental stimulation of work and the interaction with former workmates. As I do not have friends, my workmates was all I really had.

My husband suffered permanent brain damage as a result of life saving medical treatment he received two years ago. He has Stage IV terminal cancer, a degenerative neurological disorder, a serious auto immune disorder and several MH disorders. Caring for him is now my full time job.

Last summer's bushfires raged all around us, and we were on evacuation alert numerous times. In the end, we were one of the lucky ones. But tragically, 4 lives were lost in our local area.

And now of course, we are all living through the COVID situation. I have been unable to visit elderly and frail family members due to border closures and travel restrictions. With restrictions and impositions on our normal everyday life changing seemingly every day, life is such a rollercoaster. COVID is making us change our lives every single day, and I do not adjust well to major change.

I know I should switch off the news and not look at sad and traumatic news, but I seem drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I feel I need to know what's happening at all times. And yet I find myself more and more upset by the growing death tolls, lost livelihoods and global virus tallies. I do not think life will ever be the same again. How can it?

I don't know if you become immune to trauma and tragedy, or if trauma builds until it eventually breaks you. There's been times in the past that I've felt almost numb to it all. But more recently, I seem to be breaking and feeling even more alone and without hope of things ever turning around for the better. I just feel that I have no hope left in me.

Re: A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

Hi @Former-Member and thank you for the lovely good afternoon pic you posted here yesterday. Loved it.

Yep, my little Holly's wounds appear to be healing up pretty well, and she is not in anywhere near as much discomfort as what she was. Reminds me that I need to phone and make an appointment for her to see the vet on Friday.

My own surgical wounds had healed up well, but the radiation has stirred things up again unfortunately. In fact its sore all over now, not just the scar line. The whole breast is very tender and sore, from inflamation. And the skin reaction from the radiation ... yes the nurses were right ... it is getting redder, itchier and more blotchy. But it will settle over the next week or two. And I have been using the special ointment as advised. Hopefully it will prevent it getting too much worse and will also stop any infection. Yes ... I am maintaining a good amount of fluid intake. Very important, as you quite rightly point out.

Looks like you are planning on leaving Brizzy today to start your return road trip journey. Glad you have had a couple of nice days with your Son. Are you catching up with your friend today before heading off? Safe travels.

Dear @BlueBay

Yes thats right, I am slowly ticking a few boxes that I need to. A good feeling to know I am actually accomplishing something. Holly seems pretty much her normal self now, which is great. I have my work cut out keeping her from doing more than she should. So thats a good sign.

Very true BB, talking to my Dad each day is precious. I expect @Anastasia would agree with that, after having had time away last week with her Dad. I'm really sorry BB that your mother manages to prevent any meaningful interaction or visits between you and your Dad. Its very sad.

My Dad had an apt yesterday with a surgeon, who was to remove a nasty skin cancer from my Dads forehead. He was a farm worker most of his life, and so was out in the hot sun (unprotected) every day. And he has fairly fair skin. So he has dreadful skin as a result, many skin cancers removed over the years. He has a couple more now which are causing lots of difficulties. The surgeon was to remove them yesterday. But she said it will need a skin graft. So it didnt happen. Instead he is booked into the hospital for the surgery and graft to happen there. Although it was marked as urgent, it could be 3 months before he gets it done. He is very disappointed, and very unhappy about having to go to hospital. He has had grafts before, which took really well. So hopefully this one will too, once it happens.

@Anastasia ... Hi there. I'm okay, just feeling very flat, tired and irritated. Hubby had an appointment at his GP this morning at 9am, but when we got down there they said it would be at least an hour and a half wait. Some emergency or something apparently. Too long to wait around, so we came back home. About to head back in now though. Would have been nice to know before we went in. Could have been a less rushed start to the day. Oh well, hopefully we wont need to wait too long this time. Are you working from home today, or back to the office? I hope work yesterday was not too much of a shock to the system after your week off. How is your boy and your son?

Dear @WIP

Thanks for your message the other day here. I have been thinking of you too, and little Levi. Holly and I have been having lots of loving cuddles, although with all her stitches its a tricky thing to do. Carefully does it.

I'm thinking of you today as you process the issue around your new psychiatrist not being able to take you on as a patient. I find it unfathomable that its happened like that. You didnt say, but was she able to offer an alternative pdoc, or suggest that she can see you for a short term while you await another pdoc? Would your psych be able to help?

Re: A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

Oh Em, I am so sorry to learn of your Dad. I would imaging that you all would be very concerned waiting three months!!! I hope something gives to enable it to happen for him sooner (fingers crossed)

I'm not surprised you are feeling very flat, tired and irritated. That is frustrating especially when a simple phone call should have been made to save you the trip. Grrrr. You have just reminded me to call mine, thank you! Good luck this time, I suspect perhaps you are back on your way. Hoping you are in and out and get what you need (again, fingers crossed)

Yes I am working from home today, I did this as I needed to be here for my boy. Today my anxiety is through the roof and I am not being very productive. Praying my boy is ok and gets through his day as my inner sixth sense is telling me that it won't go to plan. I have more work than I can poke a stick at and all I want to do is throw the towel in and get my boy better but I know it's time and I can't not work indefinately.

Love you @Emelia8

Re: A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

Hi @Anastasia ... glad you are able to work from home today. Takes a bit of pressure off you I hope. Any news on how your Boy is doing so far? It would be such a relief if everything goes to plan. Sorry to hear about the huge amount of work you have at hand, but hopefully you can get through a fair chunk of it from home and without interruptions. I expect it may seem like a quick and easy solution to chuck the towell in at work, and concentrate purely on getting your Boy better and in a more stable place than he currently is. But it would only be a short term solution to one problem only, but would open up additional long term problems for you in the process.

Thankfully the GP was on time for the second attempt ... and we were not kept too long this time. All done now, and got the necessary scripts, referrals and blood test authorities in hand. So thats hubby sorted for a little while.

Yes Dad has had a problem with this particular cluster of skin cancers for a year or more. His GP has burned or frozen them off numerous times, but they keep coming back bigger and more problematic each time. Clearly they are deeply imbedded and have their little feelers in there. And being on his forehead, just above his eye, it is constantly getting knocked and that makes it really sore for him. So I too hope he can get in to have it out, sooner than the mentioned 12 weeks. My fingers are crossed also.

So ... did you call your GP, and do you have the results from your heart tests from some 10 days ago? Hope you can get your anxiety at a reduced level in order to make some progress on your work commitments. Love you more.

Hello dear @Emelia8

it appears notifications have not been working so apologies I'm only getting back yo you now 😞

My boy just called and so far so good. I did tell him I am right there with him as far as anxiety goes and I too would appreciate a magic pill right about now... he laughed and hopefully it made him feel a little better 🙂

You are right as far as chucking in the towel, I am very lucky to have this opportunity so would be crazy to walk away under the circumstances, just have to keep pushing forward and I am making some dents in the workload.

your Dad xox

Yay, so please to hear the GP was on time for the second attempt and you now hubby is sorted for a little while 🙂 Hopefully he is happy that the dates are in the diary for what he needs 🙂

"So ... did you call your GP" Yes I did, he said there is nothing to worry about and his assumption around a blockage was based on the high levels of choloesterol which are unusually high without a blockage and he has put it down to the good old genetics. So all good news for now and I will do some research around trying to lower it to avoid meds in the future. 🙂

I am aware your dreaded date is approaching Em, is there anything we can do here to help to protect and prepare you. I just want to wrap you up in cotton wool/bubble wrap and whisk you away to somewhere divine. Perhaps we can all don our wings and flutter around for the fews days before and explore? Please have a think around what support we can provide cause I sure as heck want to I just am at a loss as to how to best support you. You are truly a gift and I treasure you so much.

Love you more xox
