A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

As a young child and into my teens, I have vivid memories of a violent and abusive father. Dad was essentially a good man and worked hard to provide the necessities for his young family. He was also a very proud man, and it was hard to make ends meet as a lowly paid manual worker. He was by nature a quiet, shy and gentle man with a lovely dry sense of humour. But alcohol turned him into a violent abusive drunk, with a quick and volatile temper. Mum would tell me and my siblings to go to our room whenever this happened. I know she tried her best to shield us from the violence as much as she could. But it's hard to miss the shouting and the smashing of items as arguments raged. Our tiny 4-roomed home allowed no escape from what was going on. We all knew not to comment afterwards on Mum's frequent and obvious injuries.

As a pre-teen, I experienced the heartbreak of losing a much loved uncle via a tragic shooting accident. Soon after, I lost a school friend to drowning in a farm dam, and a fellow classmate to an accident in a grain silo.

In my senior high school years, my best friend died in a car accident, 2 additional classmates died in separate car accidents the following year. All this while still at school.

When I started going out on dates (as a young and naive 19yo) the first boy I ever went out with was critically injured in a random attack in a hotel. The second man I dated, died in a work accident while carting hay. My next boyfriend lasted a little longer, I dated him for a year before he too died - in another car accident. I was devastated.

When I was in my late 20's, my Mums youngest brother died at the hands of his then girlfriend. When in my early 30's, my Dads youngest brother (and my favourite uncle), committed suicide.

It was in Feb 1996, when in my mid 30's, that I was beaten and sexually assaulted in my own home, by a former friend and someone I had once trusted. This caused major trauma and it took a very long time for me to recover from, both physically and emotionally. I could not escape the fear of it happening again, nor the horror of it all. Feeling vulnerable and unsafe, I desperately needed to escape to hide, so I sold my home a few months later and moved. Still trying to escape I sold and moved again, this time to another state. I could not allow this person to find me again. The mental trauma of this violent rape continues to affect me badly every year.

A couple of years after the assault, I entered into what turned out to be an abusive and highly volatile relationship. I married someone just like my Dad. My husband is essentially a good man, but has a traumatic past himself, and is an alcoholic and a narcissist. I guess that old saying, that you end up marrying someone just like your Dad, is true.

In my early 40's my remaining best friend from high school died on the operating table during what should have been a very simple routine minor procedure. I'm godmother to her children. She had fled a violent marriage when her kids were young, and had essentially been in hiding since that time.

Around the same time, the husband of a workmate of mine died in a freakish workplace accident. My 24yo nephew was seriously injured in a mining accident which resulted in permanent injuries to both legs which will limit him for life.

Our neighbour from the adjoining farm to ours, committed suicide during the hardship of a prolonged drought in the mid 2000's. Our two families had been quite close, and this hit the very small rural community very hard.

I was in my 50's when my youngest brother was seriously injured in a fatal car accident. He was very lucky to survive and, five years on, he continues to have serious ongoing physical and mental health challenges. Tragically his young daughter died in the accident. This major loss affected my whole family very badly, and marked the rapid decline of my Mums health. The loss of her only granddaughter, whom she was very close to, broke her heart. My beloved Mum died just over 12 months ago.

After so many of my friends and family died or were permanently injured in freakish circumstances, I started isolating myself to a large degree - cutting myself off from any remaining friends. In my 20's and 30's I never went on dates - no more boyfriends for me. Therefore no more losses? I never permitted myself to get close to any new friends. I figured I was cursed somehow and caused all these tragic things to happen to so many around me. It seemed I wasn't safe to be around. As tragedies continued to happen throughout my life, it served to reinforce that thinking.

Working life ... I experienced a workplace accident when in my late 30's which resulted in permanent physical impairment and ongoing chronic pain. In my 50's I was targeted by my workplace manager after calling out a case of workplace bullying against a fellow worker. I became the target of sustained harassment and bullying as a result. It became more than I could handle, so I resigned.

Given my physical limitations and ongoing pain levels, I sought and found part time work. I worked with a lovely bunch of people and thoroughly enjoyed the work for about 6 years in total. Unfortunately I was forced to leave work a few years ago due to carer responsibilities. Leaving work and being stuck at home every day was a major adjustment for me. I miss the mental stimulation of work and the interaction with former workmates. As I do not have friends, my workmates was all I really had.

My husband suffered permanent brain damage as a result of life saving medical treatment he received two years ago. He has Stage IV terminal cancer, a degenerative neurological disorder, a serious auto immune disorder and several MH disorders. Caring for him is now my full time job.

Last summer's bushfires raged all around us, and we were on evacuation alert numerous times. In the end, we were one of the lucky ones. But tragically, 4 lives were lost in our local area.

And now of course, we are all living through the COVID situation. I have been unable to visit elderly and frail family members due to border closures and travel restrictions. With restrictions and impositions on our normal everyday life changing seemingly every day, life is such a rollercoaster. COVID is making us change our lives every single day, and I do not adjust well to major change.

I know I should switch off the news and not look at sad and traumatic news, but I seem drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I feel I need to know what's happening at all times. And yet I find myself more and more upset by the growing death tolls, lost livelihoods and global virus tallies. I do not think life will ever be the same again. How can it?

I don't know if you become immune to trauma and tragedy, or if trauma builds until it eventually breaks you. There's been times in the past that I've felt almost numb to it all. But more recently, I seem to be breaking and feeling even more alone and without hope of things ever turning around for the better. I just feel that I have no hope left in me.

Re: A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

I'm sorry everyone for not posting an update here since Tuesday. Thanks for saying you miss me @Anastasia ... although I have been around other threads, just not here lately. @Peri ... please do not worry, I will be okay.

As usual, thanks so much to everyone who has posted such lovely messages and provided me with much needed support since my last update, both here and on other threads. Not sure what I would do without you all. I wish I could express just what your support means to me, but its a little hard to describe. Just know you are each invaluable to me, precious in your own right ... and I am so very grateful to have met you all.

So ... another update.

It really shook me that my psych cancelled my appointment on Wednesday, I had so much I needed to run by her. I needed her input to help set my mind at rest that I was doing the right thing. It wasnt my psychs fault of course ... her Dad had died, and she was spending time with her Mum. So she took last week and this coming week off work. As she should. It was just really bad timing for me, and selfishly ... I felt it very badly. I sent her a quick email to express my sympathy over the death of her Dad from pancreatic cancer. She responded ... thanked me, and wanted to know how I was doing. She apologised for needing to cancel at late notice, but said she would be available to chat via email if I wanted to. I responded back to say that it was nice of her, and left it at that. I cannot bother her during this sad time in her life, and when she is spending time with her Mum.

I ended up seeing my breastcare nurse again on Friday. For a couple of reasons. She has been wanting me to see my psych too, so I could go through my issues around the hormone suppressing cancer treatment. To help me change my mindset around it all, and to help make an informed decision. When the nurse checked in with me on Wednesday and asked how I was going, I broke down in tears when I told her my psych had needed to cancel. She asked me to come in and see her, and also to see the social worker in the cancer centre where they are both located. So I went and saw them both on Friday.

Glad I saw the BC nurse because I said that part of the wound on my breast was not healing properly and was a bit inflamed and prickly. When she checked, she said there was a stitch sticking out of the end of the incision. So she had to get all her gear to get the pesky thing out. Given that all the stitches are internal and disolvable, this bit was never going to go away on its own because it was not inside the body to break down. It now feels so much better and is healing better now too. I have even been able to start massaging the scar tissue, something I should have been doing for about 3 weeks now, but couldn't.

While with the bc nurse, she fitted me for a Berlei post-surgery bra, part of a Berlei gift pack that breast cancer patients get post surgery. It can also be worn during radiation therapy. Yay! Oh .. and its soooo comfortable ... at last a bra I can actually wear for longer than 15 mins! It comes with little pockets where you put 'fillers' into in order to make the operated-on side, match the normal side. Sadly, the more the breast heals and the inflamation subsides ... the worse it looks. I've lost about a quarter of the original tissue mass, and its very noticable. At least it is to me. And it has a big trough running from upper left side of breast through to just under the nipple. Its ugly, revolting, and disfiguring. I expected this, but after the operation it didnt look too bad. So I held hope that it wouldnt be as obvious as I expected it to be. But yeah ... its now every bit as bad as I expected, in fact probably worse. Its a trough plus warping. Yuk. Its likely to get worse too with radiation therapy, which shrinks and distorts it even further. Oh well, at least the bra pads things out to look 'outwardly' normal. Well .. it makes me look even at any rate. But there is a lot of filler in there to make it look that way. I will eventually get a permanent protheses, but its too early yet because of ongoing healing, radiation and other changes.

I then saw the social worker. She is a qualified psychologist by trade, but had a late switch to social work, where she still uses the skills, plus others as well. She was very sweet and very understanding. She listened to me. She sympathised about my cancelled psych appointment. She wanted to know what concerned me most about the hormone suppressing therapy. So we went through a lot of things together. In the end she said its okay to say no to the treatment, and agrees with my concerns over it, and the risks involved for me personally. So I guess I feel less like I'm being bulldozed into just accepting it. Perhaps she knew what she was doing in that regard?

The SW was also very helpful around applying for travel and accommodation subsidies for when I have to travel for my upcoming radiation therapy. So I have started that process. She also recommended I apply through MyAgedCare for future help with hubby. As she said ... its never too soon, because most people are left waiting for a very long time. So dont wait until you need it ... do it now. Makes sense I guess. I will look into it when I find time.

So it was quite a productive day on Friday. And I came away feeling more comfortable (comfy bra, prickly stitch out) and feeling under less pressure to just accept this drug therapy without question. Yeah ... I still have not made my final decision. But I can make my mind up later if I choose, and can change my mind at any time.

Tomorrow I have my radiation therapy planning session. Appointment is 11am, so I will need to leave home at 9.30am to get there in time. The appointment will be an hour and a half long, so they tell me. They will be doing a CT Scan with IV contrast. And also doing some permanent tattoos in order to line up properly for future radiation zaps. Not keen on tattoos for myself, and have never had one. Although I quite like small tasteful tatts on others. Mine will not be tasteful ... just black dots I gather .. but at least they will be small.

I got into trouble a few days ago from hubby .. I inadvertently admitted that chemo was recommended, but I rejected it. He is angry with me for not doing everything to ensure best possible cancer result. What will he do if I eventually reject the drug therapy as well? Is it a form of self harm, I wonder, to reject treatments you know will increase your chances of survival? I'm a bit confused around that whole issue. To me, its more about quality of life .. even if it ends up being shorter. Sometimes less is more.

Feeling very tired now ... and not looking forward to tomorrow. Also concerned that this recent COVID outbreak in Sydney may prevent my proposed trip South to see my Dad in early January. Hoping not.

Thank you for sharing so openly and honestly @Emelia8

I wish you didn’t have to travel any part of this journey and even though you have been amazing so far I don’t underestimate the enormity of the decisions you need to make.

At least with breast ca there is wonderful support in this country with breast care nurses, social workers etc all there to assist.

Please be assured I will be thinking of you tomorrow and only a tag away all day.

❤️💚❤️

Re: A Life of Trauma and Tragedy (Possibly Triggering Content)

It's so hard going through this cancer journey isn't it @Emelia8? And I although I don't have cancer anymore, I'm still going through ongoing issues related to the original problem. I can't say I know how you feel, but I can say I understand. People would kindly say to me 'but you look fine with clothes on'. But they don't see what we see every day when we get undressed. My latest surgery has left ugly, wrinkled wounds/scars, my left is now considerably smaller than my right, and my whole body is out of proportion and I don't feel or look right in any clothes.

But I'm so glad you've accessed the nurses, and they've been incredibly helpful and supportive. Comfort is such a big factor. I still have sutures still in, and between them, the dressing and my fragile skin healing, I'm so uncomfortable, itchy and often warm to hot. I'm not tolerating the West Australian heat when it tips over 30.

You're managing everything really well, even if you think you are not. You're thinking through your options, considering if they're right for you. Those are huge things to consider. Is opting out of treatments self harm or self sabotage? I don't know. But I also like to think it's about what we feel we can tolerate. I have thought a lot like you in the initial stages of my diagnosis. I can't say I agree with your husband being angry. I perhaps thought he might of understood. It must be hard if you feel he doesn't support you. It makes your journey rather lonely.

I too hope you get to see your father. But the situation in NSW is very concerning. And I'm glad that our state is taking a tough stance to try to protect us. Not everyone agrees with that, but I like having my life back to as normal as possible. Unfortunately though, the downside of all that is has made many people complacent and forgetful about hygiene standards.

I did write a lengthy update on my thread on Friday, but it got lost somewhere in cyber space. Perhaps I'll write again later today. I'm struggling myself with many things lately.

I'm often thinking of you @Emelia8, even if I'm not here for a while. Take care hun 💕💕💕💕💕💕😊😊

@Emelia8 thanks for your update hun. I am glad you saw the BC and SW on Friday. Hopefully they helped and were able to put your mind at eease with some of the things going on.

@Emelia8, you've come a long way since last update, well done. I'm so glad the social worker was there for you Friday, at short notice, and she was good. And glad you have such a caring Breast care nurse. - plus gifted with a "Berlei" bra! 😲 whooHoo - that's style, and it's comfe! 😁👍 with packing pouches to normalise your shape. I never knew, this is good.
Its a difficult one - ifcto refuse chemo, but it is YOUR decision to make. I don't know what is do. Keep seeking, it will come to you.
Anyway, just had huge storm here, really noisy, flash flooding in street,
Poor furbaby gets scared & needy. Quiet now so might go have late dinner.
Take care Em💞
