Online Event // Setting Boundaries as a Carer - with ARAFMI // Weds Aug 26th, 7-8.30pm AEST

Boundary setting is an important, albeit difficult, part of self-care when a loved one is living with complex mental health challenge. This may be harder and more complex for some than others. By setting boundaries, you are taking responsibility for how others treat you and your own needs seriously.

Join us for a 1.5 hour text-based chat with our special guests ARAFMI as we share ideas as to how we can set boundaries and look after our own mental health whilst caring for loved ones. This all happens on the night, right here in this thread!

Want to receive an email reminder on the night? Hit the 'Support' button below.

I'm new here - what is this?

The event runs from 7pm - 8.30pm AEST on the 26th of August. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Our text based event takes place right here! As it is text based, no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

@Centro, have you heard of Dr Xavier Amador's book called "I'm not sick, I don't need help?" That and his LEAP Institute could have some useful info for you on how to help your loved one.

good point @Dama the pandemic does seem to be creating a lot more virtual opportunities. I'd recommend everyone check out the Arafmi website to see what online supports are available as well. Our SANE Forums blog also has a few good articles on both lived experience and carer resources.

I have recently learned a concept of "Dignity of Risk". Dignity of risk is the idea that self-determination and the right to take reasonable risks are essential for dignity and self esteem and so should not be impeded by excessively-cautious caregivers, concerned about their duty of care. This has opened a whole new understanding of how the individuals learn rather than being taught (by us).

Thank you everyone for your insights so far, we have two questions to go!

@luckymeaunty @Shaz51 @Bron @FindingStrength @Dama and others 🙂

The next is a super important reflection as carers...

How can you reconnect with your loved ones away from caring duties? What are some things you can do with the person you care for that is separate to their treatment or recovery? 🤔

Re: Online Event // Setting Boundaries as a Carer - with ARAFMI // Weds Aug 26th, 7-8.30pm AEST

That connection, away from mental illness, is the thing that our loved ones want the most – to be seen first as a normal person. It conveys to the person that they are not their illness, and that they are important to family and friends who love and believe in them. The connection is in our attitude and in everyday things like playing board games, doing the dishes together, reminiscing about good times; having conversations …

VERY hard to do. Ms Teen has lots of social anxiety, prefers to play on xbox etc, preference for her friends (normal part of the teen period) & quite different lifestyle choices.

I have tried playing Mario Cart with her in the evenings, going out for lunch (pre covid), beach outings, op shopping, movies.....

Try to think of things she might like to do, but honestly she doesn't seem to be interested. I'm hoping to get agreement for some family therapy to work on our relationship so that we can feel more comfortable with each other.
