Somatization

Somatization

I have had somatizations diagnosed before (this is were stress comes out in a physical pain form) in my mouth and eye. I am working with a psychologist and these pain symptoms have gone but now I have unexplained bladder pain. I am so over pain in my life and need to feel myself again.

Has anyone else had experiences in a somatization and how did you get over it?

Re: Somatization

@Isabella1. I've not heard of your condition before, but I do know a little about Fibro Myalgia. My mum has been diagnosed over 20 years. Some days / weeks the pain is worse. Sometimes it's the fatigue that's worse. Other times it's the depression that's worse. & of course - stress just makes everything worse.
Hopefully you will find others on this forum whocalso have or know those who have somatizations & can help.
Maybe also speaking with a support group that deals in pain (fibro myalgia, arthritis etc) might also be a good place to look.
What strategies are you using to reduce stress & /or your reaction to stress? Are you working with a therapist?

Re: Somatization

As I understand it "somatization" is just a big word for things like ..."written in the body".

My main disability is physical ... herniated cervical discs ... it is standard knowledge that stress causes neck problems ... so in a way that is a somatization.

If a stressor is around for long enough .. no matter the source .. it will leave a trace in/on the body ... we may not know about it immediately ... but that is my understanding of multi-cellular organisms and the physiology of stress ... read up about the cortisol response.

Glad you have started posting.

Hope you get some relief

Hi @Isabella1,

Unexplained pain can be really difficult to deal with and treat. I heard this segment on the radio yesterday about people who experience pain that is also unexplained, and because of it is hard to treat. It can be even more trying dealing with doctors. How have you found working with your doctors around pain management?

Re: Somatization

I am working with my doctors - they are very understanding. I am doing "worry time" and relaxation tapes and I'm suppose to be walking but that can be very uncomfortable.
