Changing meds

Changing meds

Hi. I battled MDD & acute anxiety nearly all of my adult life. I've been on numerous different SSRIs, SRNIs, antipsychotics, tried rTMS & ECT. Am addicted to a benzo for my anxiety.

I am in the process of swapping out from a SRNI to a MAOI and the wash out period is hell. I really don't think I'm going to make it. This is the darkest place I have ever been.
I have no family support, honestly no friends, not able to work & are completely isolated.

i don't feel my medical team actually care much anymore, they are overwhelmed by new clients because of covid.

i hardly sleep, but the last thing in my mind before I do, is how much I want to die. It's the first thought of the day when I wake up.

what if this new medication doesn't work either??

Re: Changing meds

I feel just awful today. I'm so disappointed in myself and am beating myself up for letting my Mum down today - in a big way.

She had an endoscopy this morning. Her procedure was at the hospital where I have seen many specialists, had many tests and surgery for my gastro tract issues.

I was supposed to pick her up after her procedure.

However, when she text this morning to see if I was still ok to pick her up and mentioned that if not, she had arranged for a friend of hers to do so as backup - I took the easy way out and let her friend pick her up. I gave her a call and we talked quickly, then I burst into tears and I admited that I was nervous about going to the hospital.

My mum has been the only support I've had over the past horrible two + years of being so very unwell mentally and the ONE time she needs my help, I let her down because I was too anxious and just couldn't. To the already long list of faults I have (that I didn't use to), I can now add 'unreliable' to the list.

I'm trying to figure out in my mind what it was that I was so anxious about.

That it was the hospital I used to frequent a lot myself? - I don't think so, because they helped me there.

That I haven't been out of the house for over a week, and actually driving somewhere, finding a carpark, navigating my way to the 'day surgery' area (which has moved from where it was when I attended) or going to pick up my Mum who needed to have something checked out, and it could be bad? - Maybe. The last time I visited someone in hospital was my Dad, and he came home a few days later to die at home. But, I have been in hospital myself since then - the mental ward of a hospital last year, two times for treatment that didn't work.

That this bloody illness has taken over my life so much so, that I can't now even be relied upon to help my Mum when I'm the only family she has locally (my sister is interstate) - Most likely.

I am weak, unreliable, selfish and a disappointment. I hate myself even more now.

Thankfully, Mum is ok. She has a hernia - treatable with medication. Her friend picked her up and she made it home safely and is now having a snooze after being up so early. She insists that it was no problem that I didn't pick her up and her friend did, but I know she'd be disappointed that I couldn't do it. Disappointed for both of us.

If I were my old self, I would have insisted I stay over at her place last night, drove her in this morning, gone and had breakfast and coffee, while waiting for her. Then drive her home and looked after her this afternoon and tonight.

But, instead I chickened out and have spent the morning crying and beating myself up. More guilt to deal with. I hate being who I am now, what a pathetic person I have become - I don't know how to get any better, I'm just getting worse. I should have pushed myself today to go. I probably would have done fine. I would have had my anti-anxiety pills on hand if needed.

Regret, regret, regret, guilt, guilt, guilt, shame, shame, shame, shame......

Thanks for reading. I don't expect any responses, I needed to get it out. I hope you all don't think too much less of me - you should though.

@WIP I would just give you a hug right now, I’m sure your mum would too.

All you reasonable reasons for not picking your mum up are valid. You are not well yourself. Unfortunately, we are our own worst critic.

Be gentle with yourself........please. Sending buckets of ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

Re: Changing meds

I am sorry you feel that way about yourself @WIP and that your illness keeps dragging you down but isn’t it good that your Mum’s friend was able to pick her up?

Try and see the positive rather than beating yourself up.

Hugs and more hugs

Re: Changing meds

Oh my dear @WIP ... you are so very hard on yourself, arent you? It isnt going to help you, or anyone else, to be so self critical. As for why you did not feel able to pick your mum up .... I think any one of those reasons could be the culprit. Perhaps that is something for you to work on in future?

As for anxiety ... yeah well ... its like a mind block sometimes. If it gets hold of you ... you probably dont even need to have a plausible reason as to why it hits. Anxiety breeds off its own self I find.

You may be hating yourself right now for what you see as weakness, unreliability and being a disappointment to your Mum. But I am sure your Mum does not see you that way at all. And I dont either. I see you are being very brave and insightful in attempting to interpret your reaction to not feeling able to collect your Mum from the hospital. It means you are thinking, reacting and trying to solve issues. Next time will be better. And I am sure there will be future occasions where your Mum will need you, and you will be able to stand up and be the loving support she knows you to be.

Try to put those feelings of regret, guilt and shame aside WIP ... it is definitely not warranted. And I certainly do not think any less of you for your inability (on this one occasion) to assist your Mum. Sending love and some self soothing your way.

Re: Changing meds

My darling friend L,

This is a quick reply I'm sorry but I do hope you hear it.

As a Mum the love we have for our child/Ren no matter the age never fades. I have in your words been let down a trillion times and yet I love both my boys unconditionally and couldn't even tell you one time that I have been "let down" because I let it go, I can't remember. They are human, they have reasons and it's ok. I'm sure your mum is the same. In face I know she would be, she's raised a beautiful, sensitive, resilient, strong daughter.

I'm glad she's ok. Please forgive yourself and let it go hunny. You deserve that. MI sucks, it's invisible. Sufferers are expected to function normally to the outside world. Truth is it's not possible. Not because of selfish reasons, because of the illness. If it was the flu people would understand and say can I help, you should be in bed, perhaps even bring a meal over. I hope that all makes sense. I love you. Tomorrow is another day. Go hug little Levi sweets xxx

Hi @Eve7

You're so very sweet, thank you.

I'm alright so far today. Just back from taking little Levi for a walk. It feels quite muggy out there.

How are you settling back being at home? I hope you are travelling along ok.
