We would like to invite members from both Lived Experience and Friends, Family and Carers Forums to join our Topic Tuesday this month!

We are very excited to have two special guest artists from the DAX Centre coming to our Topic Tuesday this month. We will be discussing a range of topics on all things art and creative expression, as well as covering some tips on how we can apply creative expression to our daily lives! ✨

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 8:30pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

What time does this event start in my timezone?

  • AEST- 7pm
  • ACDT- 6:30pm
  • ACST- 5:30pm
  • WST- 4pm

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Probably where I am the most creative is in the garden, designing our new gardens each time we have moved has brought me joy. It is good for my mental health as it gets me out the house and improves our environment and I can share excess plants and produce. Renovating and decorating our home also gives opportunity for creativity.

Thank you everyone for sharing the different ways you engage in creative expression!

So great to hear how engaging in these processes have helped you and/or your loved ones "to find the light in darkness", as @Maggie has said so well 🌻

What are some of the challenges you have faced when starting the process of expressing your creativity?

@Former-Member I find light in colour. Creating shades and mixing them. That bring light in my darkness.

@Former-Member Motivation, it’s hard to push through something. And frustration when it doesn’t turn out well.

@Judi9877 yes! I love abstract for the same reason - the freedom! There is no rules, right or wrong.. just the freedom to allow the materials to be a conduit for your expression. There is something so liberating about making intuitive decisions without fear or judgment.. to allow that space for ourselves.. it's a really special thing

I think that the greatest challenge we all have to giving creative expression to the spirit is getting over the critical mind that judges, wants to do things well and doesn’t want to fail.

How many times have you heard your mind and body shrink away with fear/anxiety from the opportunity to be creative because of these expectations that we have to be ‘good’ and skilful?

When we can get to a place in a life when we can appreciate ourselves as utterly unique, fallible and forever learning, do we then give ourselves the freedom to turn off the critical mind that inhibits you from being you, as you are, to create something deeply personal.

We as humans, who got this far in evolution by creating, learning by experimentation and curiosity, must know that none of us became good at anything without trial and error and practice. You see babies learning this way.

There is nothing more beautiful than someone just being their self in creation, but it takes suspending judgement and witnessing with a loving gaze to see it.
