Re: Major depression....

Hi there, I have been where you are, so hard, so alone, so hurtfull, so endless..... I don't know your surcumstances that lead to where you are at the moment, I don't need to know as the end result is the same. The mental hospital: knock down the stigma they say, yer lets all be happy and actepting about it, wrong, this is a nice notion but you are branded by many, some very close to you weather you like it or not. Who understands, havn't found any one yet. The wife and kids gone: it seems almost like a death in the family but you are not allowed to grieve as they, or the notion of them comes into your life now and then. You didn't stop loving them, yet you are the one paying pay the price. You are wondering whatyour kids are going to think about you, you fear what is being told to them about you, if it is correct or not. You have lost controll of your life, the direction of your life, the meaning of your life and the purpose of your life as all of this has been ripped away from you.

You have one huge adavantage, your kids are young and I would assume you are still in the first third or you life expectency, this gives you time to "trade out of, work around, plot a course". Youneed to remember that a farther is not a father because he was there for a short time, moreso a father is a father beause he takes the time time over many years to develope the relationship he would like to have with his children when they are adults. Start looking at life in blocks rather than day by day, yep easy to write, hard to implement it. Once you realise that the most important thing here is your kids and not the woman you probably still love you can see a path to follow while your kids gro up. Eventually, i would suspect some sort of visitation will be worked out wither by you both or a court, either way, this must happen for the benifit of your kids, not you or the mother. This is QUALITY time to be used to form a open acepting and understanding relationship between you and your daughters, BE HONEST to them. Remember this is a many year project whit each meeting contrubiting a tiny amount to the end result. Stick to it mate, over time all wounds will heal as the rawness of it all settles down. This may take years but while it is taking place, work on your relationship with your daughters so when they are able to fdrive, you will be their forst port of call. Everything you do for here on is to benifit you and your daughters. Look at the big picture (future) and let it consume the little picture (now). How to do all of this with the f****** depression is no easy feat and the only thing I can say is believe in yourself, slef talk is great. Tell yourself that you are going to make a great dad, you are goong to produce great adult children. After you tell yourself this, you will skoff at the notion and will do for some time, keep at it and you will overt time see that this is correct. Your daughters love you, I will repeat thet, your daughters love and always will. They will acept you always and the scurge of depression that haunghts you, because that IS you, the you they love. The big picture.......

Re: Major depression....

@Mozoman. I'm sorry for the pain you are going through. You say you are going to see your gp. That's good. Are you also seeing a counselor / psychologist as well. I find it helps to talk things through and he also helps me focus on the positives in my life.
Have you looked into some mens support groups - specifically separated fathers.
Have you spoken to a legal representative regarding access to your children. Dads are important in a child's life. And having depression or another MI does not stop your right to being a parent. There are a lot of parents on this site.
Speak to a lawyer. Talk to your gp / therapist. Try and keep in contact with your kids- until shared access can be arranged. Even if you have to write them a letter. And finally, don't give up. Keep trying as hard as you can. You are a dad. You are important!

Re: Major depression....

@Aspro thank you, your post made a lot of sense and one thing i have started doing is writing them each a letter once a week - email is not the same. I hope they get excited when they see them. For whatever reason, it makes me feel happy when i pop those envelopes in the postal box

It is hard and weekends are the worst, but i keep making sure im busy, and a favourite quote of mine by my guitar hero is "we move forward by coming from"

I have that up on my wall and look and read it each morning

Re: Major depression....

@utopia thank you again, i have since posting this been speaking to a lawyer i know, and after spending two weeks in the mental ward (i was the only one there voluntarily) he has said he will take care of the fAmily court issue as she cannot rerfuse mediation. So i am in his capable hands and have woken up this morning with a slight ( and underline the word slight several dozen times) spring in my step

I need to see my gp again on monday and organise a mental health plan as this constant stress is not helping. The bright part of this morning is whilst the aggrieved ( i cant even say her name anymore) thinks she has the upper hand, eventually this game of chess she is playing will go against her

There - ive ranted enough

Re: Major depression....

Hi @Mozoman I am sorry to hear it's been so long without seeing your family, it sounds like you're having a rough trot to say the least. As a woman who works in mental health I have noticed the one thing that will bring even the toughest guys to tears is the love they have for their kids. It's kind of beautiful actually. I'm sure not being able to see your girls right now is undoubtedly heart-wrenching. I like what @Aspro said about it being sort of like grieving a death. I wonder does that resonate with you too? I think it's important to acknowledge the 'loss', and allow yourself to experience the grief of it all, in your own way. Do you have any pictures of your kids that you can pull out and look at when you're really missing them?

MensLine Australia has professional counsellors available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing confidential and anonymous information and support for all relationship issues. If you're feeling low you can always give them a ring on 1300 78 99 78 or chat online through their online counselling service.

But like you said, you keep trying - good on you. Even though you're feeling so lost, just keep putting one foot in front of another. Do what you have to do, leaning into the support you need for yourself right now is the pathway back to your children. Take care of yourself.

Re: Major depression....

@Former-Member thank you - your post makes a lot if sense and im thankful.

My pyscologist is slowly working theough my issues, and as a very important quote says.... We move forward by coming from....

Deep down i know i will get to spend time with my girls, who are 9 and 7, but it is so very hard - i dread weekends but one step at a time

She cant keep them from me forever, particularly given i never did anything to them, and i just need to keep that thought in my mind, as hard as that is

And i thought id share something.... If made me smile just before.... My eldest daughter is home sick and put up the Scottish flag on their cubby house..... Just for you daddy....we are scots! Now we are from Scottish heritAge and ahe knew id love to see it up.

Thought id just share that

Re: Major depression....

Mozoman, You are absolutely correct in what you say about your children, this is a temporary separation and so many good times are yet to happen between the three of you. The quote from your psychologist is stark and so to the point, obviously very professional. Your choice of direction is commendable and you should be proud of yourself.....
