Re: R u a Hoarder to?

Hi @BlueBells , thank you so much for your response to my clicking the "support button", after 7 years! I was disappointed to find this thread was from 2016, as I would love to chat to some other hoarders.

I did lol. About 7 years ago and I haven't made a lot of progress . Working on it though.

Hoarding is so difficult to tackle 😢 and there don't seem to be many other people on the forums here with it. I've been here 3+ years.

It sounds as though you have worked on the "incoming" and have had some success - well done. I recently stopped - well, slowed - the "incoming" too.

Am here if you'd like to chat about it 🙂

Hi @NatureLover

Thank you for the lovely response. To be honest, it's quite possible most people fit into it somewhere, I do think many hide, ignore, or just are not aware of it. Please don't think that is criticising, it's from what I am learning.

Simple things, like having six months supply of several items in the cupboard, only to have some go way beyond 'best use' date. This often occurs when spotted on special and the brain wasn't quick enough to say "hey, there are already four in the cupboard!"

I'm more than happy to chat about it.

Hi @BlueBells , thanks for your reply 🙂

I didn't think that was criticising at all.

I also buy mulitples! And there is not much storage in this small unit, so the groceries end up staying in their bags on the floor, where I trip over them 😣 I also have food obsessions, so I change instantly to another food, only to have mulitples of the previous food going out of date. My psychologist has me donating the excess food every now and then to the local food bank.

Do you have friends / family / professional support for your hoarding?

Re: R u a Hoarder to?

Good morning @NatureLover

Support! Well, over the years I've found mouse plagues help. Much of the stuff they get into is immediately throw. Admittedly one loses quite a bit of "would have kept" but overall, certainly clears a bit of clutter lol

Around 20 years ago there was a site mentioned in the local church paper. Get Organized Now . American, so z instead of s . Search that and you will find that come up.

Some years later they mentioned De Clutter Fast by Mimi Tanner. Search that and I'm sure yo will find that one very helpful. There is a once off cost for this, well, was when I got it years back, but this one might be very good for you.

I've got a bit to get done today, will chat later.

Have a great day

Hi @BlueBells , I was actually asking whether you have any support! Do you have a psychologist, or family or friends that are understanding enough to help with your hoarding?

I have one friend who is very understanding, and comes round when I am unable to cope. She sits there and gives feedback when I ask for it, and doesn't try to take over and make decisions for me. She's great.

Today I'd like to tackle the small kitchen bench, and / or try to find a handyman, as my last one retired.

Good luck today with your tasks...

P.S. I'm usually only around in the early mornings, as my psychologist has me limiting my time on the forums since I burnt out in 2020.

Hi @NatureLover

Support. (hate when type heaps and hit wrong key and it wipes).

Most help is those sites, I've not found counsellors that help much with cutter/hoarding

I only have found one friend like yours, but he lives hours away, and I only met him a few years ago. It's exactly what I would dearly love to have though, exactly what I need..

Got lots on today and fibro biting.

Catch you later Hugs oxox

Re: R u a Hoarder to?

Hi @BlueBells , what's "fibro biting"?

I gave my psychologist the workbook 'Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving and Hoarding' by Tolin, Frost and Steketee. She has been helping me for years with the hoarding and we have had good success.

I was able to overcome the acquiring of new things, it was just the getting rid of that was hard. But I even managed that. Then last September (a year ago) I started acquiring again...then about 2 months ago I was able to stop again. But it means that I now have 40 boxes in my neighbour's shed to dispose of and I can't face them at the moment 😢

I didn't achieve any sorting out yesterday, so am going to try again today.

What are your aims for tackling your hoard?

Re: R u a Hoarder to?

Hi @NatureLover

Fibromyalgia. It's an interesting thing. Not a disease, but certainly a dis - ease lol. It can have its own little 'cloud of depression' as I call it. Born of frustration of not being able to do things, to think straight, to find energy, to find motivation.

It comes and goes, good days, bad days, unpredictable at best. I am learning how to work with it, but still gets me down at times.

Hoarding. Not sure if I am actually an hoarder, but certainly way too much clutter and very hard to "let stuff go". Certainly not the American ones, where one walks on top of stuff and house has become unsanitary.

Have you seen the Australian one Space Invaders ? That's more me, just way too much "stuff". I do like the therapists on the yanky and pommy ones though, they explain very well, but I think the Aussie ones just not to that point, so they don't delve as deeply.

How to tackle. I have to. I don't know how to, as I "need" someone to "walk with me" as you have with your friend. As you know, that person needs to be special, they need to be trustworthy, non-critical, supportive. You understand what I mean.

Re: R u a Hoarder to?

So sorry that you have fibromyalgia, @BlueBells 😢

My house isn't like on the show 'Hoarders' either, but there are narrow goat paths in the kitchen and lounge-room, and sometimes it's hard to access the kitchen sink, and the stove and kitchen benches are covered with stuff so I can't cook.

I don't have a TV by choice, so didn't know there was an Australian show called Space Invaders.

Yes, the person who helps has to be all those things. I've had helpers mock me in the past and say things like, "Why are you keeping THAT?!" I hope you can find someone. If not, then I can help virtually if you like, by being a tidying buddy. I know it helps me if I can report in to someone what I've achieved / not achieved.

Re: R u a Hoarder to?

Hi @NatureLover

I'm happy t work with you, I've often hoped to find someone, but not that many actually understand. "Helpful" comments can actually be quite hurtful or even put one back a bit. Our minds are great at twisting things.

I have a friend who may be a bit like you. Your kitchen sounds like hers.

She seems to have what I class rubbish all over the place amongst other stuff. I mean, empty boxes and bags, that type of rubbish. I asked if she'd like me to put them in the bin for her, but she prefers to do that herself. She also says it's hard because the council bin is outside. I've no idea if she has a bin indoors.

I've got small cardboard or plastic boxes on the top cupboard and things like cup-a-soups, noodles etc in boxes with labels on them. I've found I'm doing less over buying of foods that way as all like things are in one place. My friend told me she's doing that and finding it is helping her to stop over buying as well.

This small window makes it hard to read over what I have written, I hope it makes sense.

Take care..Hugs.
