My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I'm going to apologise in advance that this post will probably go in circles as that is how I often think😬.

I have thought quite deeply about posting this for a long time. One of the reasons for doing so is for any others who may be feeling so alone with this too. There seems very little support and information for it. I had desperately tried when first diagnosed to look for support but there is very little around specific to DPD.

Currently this label causes so much shame but it's not really just the label. I think because I always saw myself as a strong fairly independent person the reality that I matched many of these traits has shamed me to my core. My current diagnosis from a few psychiatrists is DPD with BPD traits, anxiety, dythsmia and probable adult ADD. My current therapist tends to see it as CPTSD with a mixed type personality disorder (meeting traits from a few personality disorders), depression and anxiety. She watched my personality come more disordered from the trauma a few years back. I guess it doesn't matter what the label is I know I'm a dysfunctional mess on most days.

Back to my elephant. When I'm with someone and they know about my elephant (DPD) she behaves herself (mostly my therapist and best friend) and I can grow and move on. When I'm in the room with someone who keeps treating my elephant as if she's bad (my mental health team frequently) she begins to fill the room until I begin to suffocate sometimes becoming suicidal. Sometimes I become paranoid about people finding out about my elephant and I let her take over and suffocate me, sometimes becoming suicidal. This is the other reason I have decided to disclose. On the forums I had been getting more and more paranoid that I'd show the traits and I was suffocating under it. This had nothing to do with anybody but me. So now my elephant is in the room here too and I'm hoping now that I've introduced her she'll behave😊.

Lastly for me DPD hasn't really shown its full colours until the last few years. Prior to that I've had a partner since I was about 16. The longest time without one is 4months. It's really common for someone with this to need to have to have a partner and really difficult to not have one. My goal is to be in control of me before I venture down that path again. I also don't meet the more common traits of not being able to chose clothes, or food or common things like that but decision making in general is something I struggle with, however I feel this is improving. I have huge issues with fear of criticism, rejection and abandonment. I am often very naive and fantasize frequently. There are many others too. Lastly the psychiatrists have said that DPD is the main reason I haven't worked since my first son was born nearly 22 years ago. This for me is a huge obstacle knowing I have to (and want to) enter the paid workforce again.

If anyone has any similar experiences please chime in. 😊💜

Thinking of you @Former-Member

Are you ok? Sorry to hear that you are struggling. You asked the question, How does one choose to live? When I feel really down and feel like I have no fight left, I just think of my daughter and that keeps me going. I know she needs me.

I dont know what to say to help you feel better. I wish I did. Sending you love and hugs.

@Former-Member

I think you are busy with sports commitments on Saturday mornings. Hopefully the weather is nice where you are, and a nice cup of coffee is a part of the equation ...

Thinking of you this morning.

It will feel a little strange, I am sure, with so many bodies in the house, but I went to boarding school at 12yo, and uni accommodation at 17yo ..... and you find your own hearth within the greater one ....

Everyone in an adult household just needs to be a bit respectful of the needs of the "body corporate", and you can be non-verbal about these things if you start to get tired of the sound of your own voice ....

One of my favourites is a thin roll of masking tape and a black marker pen. I leave little "mum notes" like - no food refuse in this bin please (laundry) - and labelling colours for the different wash baskets I keep in the laundry.

Here are some more "mum notes" ....

Please let me know when the milk is running low - fridge door

Please let me know when the bread is running out - on the wall next to the bread basket

Please let me know when the butter is running out - on the pantry door

Please let me know when the soap powder is running out - on the door of the laundry cupboard

I have labelled spaces in the fridge, and in the linen cupboard, with kids names.

And my big bug-bear is labelling left-over food with the date it goes into the fridge.

I leave the tape and pen available for others to do the same. Any form of communicating the basics that works is good ❣

That sounds excellent @Faith-and-Hope

I have never been that organised - but then I have never had adult children in my household

Everyone needs to pull their weight

How are you going @Former-Member - I have been thinking of you

Thanks so much @Faith-and-Hope, @Decadian, @Former-Member, @Former-Member, @Appleblossom for all your thoughtful responses and concern. I'm going to return this thread back to dependent personality disorder now and for that matter for all personality disorders as I feel that me being in crisis on here perpetuates the idea that DPD is life threatening. That was never my intention. I've started a new thread to deal with the crisis part. As far as DPD goes my therapist has an appointment on Monday to see my parents to deal with some of their behaviours that are keeping me stuck and that undo me. It is also for my therapist to hopefully encourage more appropriate ways for my parents to help me than what currently happens, just another complexity in my life.

@Faith-and-Hope I'm really glad your last post will be here because this is where it belongs. I'm going to come back to it when I'm more in control

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

That sounds like a positive move @Former-Member, your parents seeing the therapist ... it was something I have been meaning to ask you more about, but I have been concerned about how that sort of conversation would affect you.

I have mentioned before that my husband's family are bound in control issues and power-plays that stand in for relationships, or heavily influence them.

I have had to work hard to keep myself beyond those dynamics, and caution my kids about them. At a guess there's something like that going on for you ... but please don't feel obliged to respond, I hope It's okay to be saying this.

It's ok @Faith-and-Hope, it doesn't trigger me so much although I feel shame and I guess am more guarded about this on the forum. It's more about me protecting them a bit still too. I'm worried somehow any of this could get back to them and it would hurt them a great deal. Thanks for asking though.

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

i understand that fear very well @Former-Member.

While I stand by everything I have shared here, I am also very mindful of how much it would hurt WH most particularly, but others too, at least at this stage ....

God willing, once we reach a point of getting him sorted it would throw a very different light over it all, but at the moment that is not our reality ....

Thinking of you ....

Wow! I really like your comment and it struck a personal chord with me as I too refer to the elephant in the room. And a great quote i heard along the way asked "How do you eat an elephant? "
"One bite at a time"
Although at times this principle can be hard to apply it is a helpful metaphor
