My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I'm going to apologise in advance that this post will probably go in circles as that is how I often think😬.

I have thought quite deeply about posting this for a long time. One of the reasons for doing so is for any others who may be feeling so alone with this too. There seems very little support and information for it. I had desperately tried when first diagnosed to look for support but there is very little around specific to DPD.

Currently this label causes so much shame but it's not really just the label. I think because I always saw myself as a strong fairly independent person the reality that I matched many of these traits has shamed me to my core. My current diagnosis from a few psychiatrists is DPD with BPD traits, anxiety, dythsmia and probable adult ADD. My current therapist tends to see it as CPTSD with a mixed type personality disorder (meeting traits from a few personality disorders), depression and anxiety. She watched my personality come more disordered from the trauma a few years back. I guess it doesn't matter what the label is I know I'm a dysfunctional mess on most days.

Back to my elephant. When I'm with someone and they know about my elephant (DPD) she behaves herself (mostly my therapist and best friend) and I can grow and move on. When I'm in the room with someone who keeps treating my elephant as if she's bad (my mental health team frequently) she begins to fill the room until I begin to suffocate sometimes becoming suicidal. Sometimes I become paranoid about people finding out about my elephant and I let her take over and suffocate me, sometimes becoming suicidal. This is the other reason I have decided to disclose. On the forums I had been getting more and more paranoid that I'd show the traits and I was suffocating under it. This had nothing to do with anybody but me. So now my elephant is in the room here too and I'm hoping now that I've introduced her she'll behave😊.

Lastly for me DPD hasn't really shown its full colours until the last few years. Prior to that I've had a partner since I was about 16. The longest time without one is 4months. It's really common for someone with this to need to have to have a partner and really difficult to not have one. My goal is to be in control of me before I venture down that path again. I also don't meet the more common traits of not being able to chose clothes, or food or common things like that but decision making in general is something I struggle with, however I feel this is improving. I have huge issues with fear of criticism, rejection and abandonment. I am often very naive and fantasize frequently. There are many others too. Lastly the psychiatrists have said that DPD is the main reason I haven't worked since my first son was born nearly 22 years ago. This for me is a huge obstacle knowing I have to (and want to) enter the paid workforce again.

If anyone has any similar experiences please chime in. 😊💜

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I am not sure that it is a fair commitment if it is demanded by a therapist or done to placate them and you cant really get behind it.

I just wonder if there have been any activities or hobbies in your life that have been fulfilling. If you can start back into something old or find something new that might eventually give you satisfaction .. then the commitment grows out of sustainable experiences that you value .. not just a statement ... what do you think @Faith-and-Hope

Sorry @Former-MemberI am not 100% myself today and have been downing tranquilisers and called CATT team today ... the first time since 2007 apparently.

@Former-Member life is a precious gift. You choose to respect it, and use it for yourself, but also for others.

I think of my life as not only mine. My life belongs to my family too, and to not only all those who love me, but to all those who know me as well. We have a higher level of connectivity than perhaps you realise. You mean something to people who interact with you everywhere in your life.

You matter.

💜❣

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

Oh @Former-Member, its a good question, how do you commit to living? I guess it would be like any commitment - yo pick a goal & whatever is not compatible with achieving the goal is abandoned. As long as its there to sidetrack us we dail to progress properly. Trashing the stash sure would FEEL like going out on a limb, but @Former-Member, you've been on that limb a long time anyway. Time to forget the drop and ground yourself like a tree in good soil sou you can heal & grow into the best version of you. You're getting there. Deep breath, hold yourself kindly :)💕

Thanks for replying @Appleblossom especially since you are having a rough time. I'm thinking of you. Do you know I'm not allowed to call mental health triage. I'm expected to work it out myself to break the dependent part. Go figure. It doesn't help when I'm in crisis and I end up in hospital. 😔😞

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I did not realise that they do that @Former-Member. no it doesnt help when in crisis ... and they dont have an interim protocol for you to follow. I am also shocked at the amount of times you have gone into hospital recently.

I thought of calling lifeline but dont get any satisfaction there .. maybe just bad luck only tried a couple times ... havent called them for about 5 years ....

I just try and struggle on alone ... joining the forum helped break down my sense of isolation.

Are there any activities that have ever meant anything to you @Former-Member ... sport cooking craft ... the bush??

@Former-Member

Breathe.

That's fundamental.

Regulate your breathing by doing it well - deep, regular breaths.

This will calm you down and help you clear your mind of unwanted thoughts.

Stay within the boundaries.

Life with a family the ages of your lot is not about controlling everything. Its not about doing everything right. It's about co-existing in loving relationships.

Stuff gets done. Daily living happens. The kids keep practicing life skills. We keep practicing life skills. We all get there ....
