My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I'm going to apologise in advance that this post will probably go in circles as that is how I often think😬.

I have thought quite deeply about posting this for a long time. One of the reasons for doing so is for any others who may be feeling so alone with this too. There seems very little support and information for it. I had desperately tried when first diagnosed to look for support but there is very little around specific to DPD.

Currently this label causes so much shame but it's not really just the label. I think because I always saw myself as a strong fairly independent person the reality that I matched many of these traits has shamed me to my core. My current diagnosis from a few psychiatrists is DPD with BPD traits, anxiety, dythsmia and probable adult ADD. My current therapist tends to see it as CPTSD with a mixed type personality disorder (meeting traits from a few personality disorders), depression and anxiety. She watched my personality come more disordered from the trauma a few years back. I guess it doesn't matter what the label is I know I'm a dysfunctional mess on most days.

Back to my elephant. When I'm with someone and they know about my elephant (DPD) she behaves herself (mostly my therapist and best friend) and I can grow and move on. When I'm in the room with someone who keeps treating my elephant as if she's bad (my mental health team frequently) she begins to fill the room until I begin to suffocate sometimes becoming suicidal. Sometimes I become paranoid about people finding out about my elephant and I let her take over and suffocate me, sometimes becoming suicidal. This is the other reason I have decided to disclose. On the forums I had been getting more and more paranoid that I'd show the traits and I was suffocating under it. This had nothing to do with anybody but me. So now my elephant is in the room here too and I'm hoping now that I've introduced her she'll behave😊.

Lastly for me DPD hasn't really shown its full colours until the last few years. Prior to that I've had a partner since I was about 16. The longest time without one is 4months. It's really common for someone with this to need to have to have a partner and really difficult to not have one. My goal is to be in control of me before I venture down that path again. I also don't meet the more common traits of not being able to chose clothes, or food or common things like that but decision making in general is something I struggle with, however I feel this is improving. I have huge issues with fear of criticism, rejection and abandonment. I am often very naive and fantasize frequently. There are many others too. Lastly the psychiatrists have said that DPD is the main reason I haven't worked since my first son was born nearly 22 years ago. This for me is a huge obstacle knowing I have to (and want to) enter the paid workforce again.

If anyone has any similar experiences please chime in. 😊💜

When you say 'freaking myself out' do you mean
(1) running away with crazy thoughts &
(2) anxious you might act on them?
2 separate things you know

@Former-Member

That was just plain unlucky - in my bad moments a get someone who doesn't understand - but for the majority - yes - they do

But I have had times when I have rambled uselessly - and that's not a good start - so I think about the problem and pick a place to start

But we can always ring Life Line again - and again - and again - and we will find someone who will be really great - after my mother died I had Life Line of redial - and they were fantastic when I got a good person and there are many good people there

However - I did not see enough on that page to know what the trouble is - or was - a few hours back - so I guess I will read that when I find it

It happens - I am glad there always seems to be someone here who will take over in the meantime

All the best @Former-Member - try again - and again and again - and tell them the problem - that not everyone is good at it

I'm still all over the place but more just sad again @Faith-and-Hope I can't keep doing this. I think I might start a new thread for this stuff for me. It seems to make sense to have somewhere where you go when everything is so dark, like your own home and those who support you know things are not so good. My cry for help thread. I'm really I didn't get to respond to your last long post on night shift last night. 😔

Thanks @Former-Member and @Decadian. It's good to know that persistence can pay off too.

I certainly understand @Former-Member

I have those times when I am just plain frazzled - and usually this is not because of anything I have done

It's just life getting to me - and that's life I guess

So - thinking up a name for a new thread that will draw more people into the convo will help more - the elephant is understood by some - not my everyone

But I certainly pick up your dark moments - I was not always this ancient - passing years to bring a small light into the darkness - at times

Thinking of you

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

I guess my thinking @Decadian was not necessarily about more people but I want this thread to stand more on its own for issues about DPD. More of a journal over time maybe about successes and struggles with that rather me in crisis dribble. I really thank you for your support though💜💐

Re: My elephant in the room - Dependent Personality Disorder

@Former-Member, this is your thread, and if you want to post here, it's away from Night Shift (if that feels more appropriate to you) and your online friends will get flagged to find you here ....

Please don't feel that you have to respond to every post .... especially if something is a bit triggering for you. A lot of what I am mentioning is really background for me .... I am going up and down a bit, but for the most part I'm okay.

I acclimatised to carrying my family almost solo across a long period of time, and now as much as the kids are difficult at times, it's really just teen-20's stuff, or them getting a bit scatty under our circumstances with their dad, then getting a grip on it again.

My stressors are external to me. I am living within them. It's very different from your struggle, but I feel so much for you and hope it helps you that I am here too ... so glad there are others who are riding roller coaster experiences who can relate to your path more completely .... And they can tell you in their own words how to persevere, and that it is worth it .... so worth it .... when you need to hold on ....

Can you journal and see what happens ? You might find that you journal during these episodes you are having, and it might help you and your team understand better what is happening .... and perhaps why ....
