How to support my partner?

How to support my partner?

I have been with my partner for 18months and she has been suffering from some form of mental illness for over 2 years. She shared this with me after seeing each other for a couple of months. Across our time together we have tried various modes of support, she has seen several psychologists but none of which have been able to make a difference. I attended one of her sessions with a psychologist and it became quite apparent to me that the psychologist wasn't taking the scale of my partners depression/anxiety seriously, she virtually told her that she was doing fine and offered no thoughts on the matter. I am not sure exactly what she is suffering from but at times she does appear quite fine, she is very high functioning but she is easily triggered into an incredibly dark state, much more than appropriate. She seems to rapidly lose a sense of rationality and becomes extremely distressed. This has continued across our time together and does not appear to be getting any better but there is an increased strain on our relationship. She does not have any other avenues of support, she comes from a broken family who have treated her terribly and have been emotionally abusive and negligent. She struggles to trust anyone, including myself, despite my continued support. I'm am starting to come to a loss though, as she is becoming more regularly distressed and quite often directs this at me. I feel as if we go to sleep on one path and wake up on another. She does need help but is feeling increasingly hopeless. She is a lovely person but feels that noone else values her and is easily let down by others. She doesnt think she can rely on anyone and doesn't have any close friends. I have tried to encourage her into different social networks but she always seems to be let down and becomes increasingly depressed. She often complains about not feeling like her old self and can often shift this blame on to me. I sometimes worry that by caring for her I have had a negative impact but she has noone else and I am also fearful of her feeling abondoned if I stopped supporting her. I feel like I am often put in unwinable situations. I feel like I really need her to show me support as I feel I have just given for the entirety of our relationship. Im not sure where to turn to next but without some help I dont feel like I can provide any answers when she has her next struggling moment. It's a really hard situation as she is not always completley negative and I think this makes her scenario appear like an illusion to those who aren't with her when she is struggling. When she is distressed it is very concerning.

Re: How to support my partner?

Finding a group sound like a plan..there are many types in Victoria, some need no referral such as Voices groups or Grow groups, others you may need to be referred into..depending on where you live your partner may be eligible for some outreach support through PHAMS. Personal Helpers And Mentors, run through community health services or eligible in Victoria under our new model, Mental Health Community Support Services, MHCSS. You would need to ring a centralised intake and assessment service for MHCSS. Some community mental health services run peer-led programs like PeerZone, Pathways to Recovery and Partners in Recovery.
Then there are community based groups such as bipolar babes and other types..
Nikon k and other members may have other suggestions too, and also if you are not living in Vic.
Good luck!

Re: How to support my partner?

It was a tough day tuesday. My partner didnt feel that the doctor was understanding the severity of the situation and didnt feel overly understood, but we managed to get some things in place such as booked in with a psychiatrist and potential support groups. Unfortunately my partner had a go at me, saying that I hadnt been supportive and I was really struggling to maintain composure but we did get through it and had a follow up with the GP today. Today went a lot better and I think we both feel their are some options in place, including some medication. As we are looking down the psychiatry path, was wondering whether anybody did have some advice on health insurance and what type of cover would best suit? as I do not want costs to be a limitation in her seeking mental health support.

Thanks as always, this forum has been a real help.

Hi Nhoj,

It's great that you guys went to the GP and got some things sorted out, especially regarding psychiatric treatment. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction.

Even though it was a tough day, if you try to think that the tough times are all part of the recovery process, then you can at least say you are on that recovery process. So therein lies hope - you are doing it!!

I think @zipper might be able to give you some good advice on health insurance, and also I see @Alessandra1992 has been giving you some great support as usual.

Other than those two lovely people, is there anyone else that might be able to offer some advice to Nhoj?

For the record, Nhoj, I can see from this discussion thread that you are thinking and moving through all this stuff rationally, and I think that shows some great strength and determination. Good on you.

Hi

My recommendation in regard to private health insurance is get it now. You can do it online. There is a 2 month waiting period and you dont want to wait around for that if you are in trouble

  1. If you are already covered, you should be able to upgrade but check on the waiting period, it may not apply
  2. When looking around ensure that UNLIMITED private psych hospital is included. It must be unlimited. We were caught out and had a mad panic mid hospital stay. I know Medibank do this. I also know CGU do it as well. So it is top hospital cover you will need
  3. The fund will cover everything in hospital and sometimes it is more economical to be in hospital than see a private psych twice a week
  4. Medications, if I remember are paid for as well, but, not things like chemist items like painkillers
  5. My husband had a stay costing $38,000 which the fund paid for. Imagine having to pay that out of your savings ..

If you go down the private route, things happen faster, not necessarily better. You see your psych all the time, not a team, so a trust can develop between psych and patient. Also, the psych can get to understand the partners role in the process

If you arent happy with the first psych, change, there is no harm in it. Finding one that suits is most important.

Take care

ZZ

Re: How to support my partner?

I'm mooching in on this thread just to say how wonderful all the advice and support has been for Nhoj...

I am currently looking at taking out provate health cover as my psychiatrist wants to hospitalise me... I have found the advice very helpful.

I would like to congratulate you Nhoj for supporting your partner. I know I sometimes say unkind things to my husband as he is the one I love the most and trust the most. I know i can say things to him and trust that he will be there for me. Not that I really mean to either... sometimes venting (loudly) is very theraputic!

Thank you Zipper for your forthright information. Very helpful. 🙂

All the best..

Hi @Nhoj

Well it's been a while 🙂

I thought of you and your experience today when I came across new member @Lucy12 's discussion about caring for their partner.

It made me wonder how things are travelling for you now.

There's some great advice here - perhaps useful for you Lucy12?
