Stopping medication

Stopping medication

Hi All,

I feel like I am losing myself and my little fighter inside me with all the meds I've been put on. I've stopped the "take as needed" meds, first day today, as I feel I want more and more and it does not change the storms in my mind. I'm also on two sets of antidepressants and I want to discuss with my psychiatrist to wean off them. I don't feel better, I sometimes feel I am worse since on meds since I am too tired for my healthy stress relieve things like running and my motivation to even get out of bed is in the negatives. My psychiatrist will probably want to change meds next week - saying that the highest dose was still not efficient, I want to discuss getting off them and monitoring how I feel. I want to die with meds, I never wanted to die before. Ok perhaps sometimes, but now it's often. And I have lost all my drive and feel they are lying to me saying it's the depression, what if it is what the meds do to my head? I've gone down constantly downhill since starting meds last year.

Anyone else have these negative effects with meds and felt better off the meds?

Re: Stopping medication

Hi @utopia

I have so much to learn.

I've decided to have a grown up discussion with my psychiatrist, so this weekend I will go through my notes and prepare the appointment. It is so easy for me to shut everyone out, but then I'm pretty much wasting time and money.

I feel a bit like a client who has all these magic dreams of what he wants to build, and no idea that it is structurally not possible.

I have nothing planned for the weekend, so I might just as well use it to think.

Re: Stopping medication

That sounds like a great idea @Former-Member. Write down what you feel you need to disagree with you though about dreams.
Yes your dreams need structures to hold them up, they need structures as part of your dream. Unfortunately we can just go straight to Z. We have to go through A & B & C etc first. We just need a plan on how to get there.
And it sounds like you already have a plan in place when you see your psychiatrist. That's the new starting point. From there you just keep adding blocks til you have a sound base. Once rhat is done you can start building up. Heading towards your dreams.
I wish you well in this. You're on your way!

I love your attitude and mention of 'grown up discussion'. It is the best way to make progress in health issues. They will also have personal experience of your together side which will help you integrate better long term.

Thinking of you.

Re: Stopping medication

Please dont ever stop your meds with out first consulting your dr. I did and it messed me up found myself in a mental crisis... so please consult a dr. Also if you have been on antidepressant medication over 6 years they say you will always need medication .

Re: Stopping medication

That is a good idea to post @Shirallee

I guess that medication doesn't solve all the problems - back in the time when I was in a deep hole my psychiastrist only gave me what I needed to sleep - I learned better techniques with no medication from a psychologist

I was on medication from a different psychiatrist for a while - but with the help from a psychologist I quartered down - from two tablets to none a quarter of a tablet a time

I think we all need to talk about it with the same person - preferably with a psycho-therapist - but then - some depression is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain - reactive depression needs a clear head -

Life can be so tricky at times

Re: Stopping medication

I was put on anti depressants by my old gp almost 11 years ago. When I came off them myself I got so sick. New Dr told me I would be on them for life.
Got my first psychiatrist when I went to hospital 2 months ago. He has halved my antiddepressant with the aim of coming off them fully as he said I have 'situational depression'. & I don't need those meds. Made me feel good as I had been well for over 6 years on the minimum dosage before workplace incident. So I was going well because I was well. I'm now on a sleeping tablet for a while as I relearn coping techniques and learn to feel my feelings again.
Not sure if my 'learnt' behavior was due to growing up with an undiagnosed dad who was sick with ptsd. Or I was just not exposed to so called 'normal emotional' behavior.
Anyway. Am doing a lot of CBT & meditation etc. So far so good

@Former-Member
I know how you feel. Similar circumstances. If we were taught ways to cope rather than with a pill. ❤️ love to you
