Stopping medication

Stopping medication

Hi All,

I feel like I am losing myself and my little fighter inside me with all the meds I've been put on. I've stopped the "take as needed" meds, first day today, as I feel I want more and more and it does not change the storms in my mind. I'm also on two sets of antidepressants and I want to discuss with my psychiatrist to wean off them. I don't feel better, I sometimes feel I am worse since on meds since I am too tired for my healthy stress relieve things like running and my motivation to even get out of bed is in the negatives. My psychiatrist will probably want to change meds next week - saying that the highest dose was still not efficient, I want to discuss getting off them and monitoring how I feel. I want to die with meds, I never wanted to die before. Ok perhaps sometimes, but now it's often. And I have lost all my drive and feel they are lying to me saying it's the depression, what if it is what the meds do to my head? I've gone down constantly downhill since starting meds last year.

Anyone else have these negative effects with meds and felt better off the meds?

Hi @Former-Member

I am sorry to hear how tough things have been for you, it sounds like you're really struggling right now. I'd really like to encourage you to speak to your psychiatrist about how you're feeling, and to be as honest as you can about it. You said you started meds last year? Can I ask - has your usual medication changed just recently? Just sometimes this can leave people having such thoughts, so it's really important to be aware of changes to how you're feeling (which you seem to be, so that's really good).

Although the Forums are unable to offer crisis-support, please remember you can contact the following organisations if you need to anytime 24/7 -

Re: Stopping medication

Oh @Former-Member you sound like you're in a bad spot tonight 😞

I feel for you. I would love to come off my meds but I don't think my psych would allow me to. Actually i have stopped them a few times before and it wasn't too good.

I don't want to be on them forever; I do want to stop them one day but for now I guess i need them to help me.

You really need to discuss this with your psych next week. Tell him everything you are saying here.

Thinking of you, hope you can get through this. We are here for you xxxooo

Re: Stopping medication

Hi @Former-Member and @BlueBay

I will keep myself safe and I have told my husband that I stopped one kind of meds - so he will see if there is a problem.

The other meds I will discuss with my psychiatrist next week. I am just so angry. I think he should support me in my wish to try and stop and see what it does. Surely we can agree on a way of monitoring? I just want to try it. I don't see the meds have helped and I can only see how I get more and more lethargic and can take less and less stress. I can always go back on meds if it doesn't work.

I think if I would be able to implement some more relaxation and grounding techniques it will help me more than popping pills long term. But I am just empty and dead inside. I feel like nothing matters. I have never felt like this before. I don't need to do anxiety challenges anymore as I would welcome the worst outcome, surely that's not how they're supposed to work?

Again, I will keep myself safe and I have a safety plan in place. But it should be my choice to take meds that mess with my brain or not.

Sorry only angry posts in my mind tonight...

I had my last and final increase with one of the meds about a month ago. The psych said the next move is to change meds. I don't want that. I don't want to be a Guinea pig going through all sort of shit meds. Surely there must be other ways? I'm not myself anymore and I rather try get back to myself.

Re: Stopping medication

Hi @Former-Member,

As far as I understand it, unless you are on a community mental health order, it is up to you whether you take your prescribed meds or not. Your psychiatrist can make strong recommendations, but it's you who decide whether you take that advice or not. Correct me if you think I'm wrong about that in your situation. I'm saying this in the hopes of reducing some of the anxiety you seem to be feeling about this.

Having said that, there are a couple of things that might be worth considering:

  • why you started taking meds in the first place: if there were unlivable aspects to what you were experiencing then, those are likely to return again.
  • it often is a bumpy ride until we find the right meds for us: during this time it is quite often the case that we may become very anxious and frustrated about the experience and question everything about the process.

The most important thing from my experience is that any withdrawal from medications you may or may not decide to do is done very gradually, preferably under medical supervision.

Kind wishes with it all, @Former-Member.

I like the way you describe your little fighter within. It can be our spirit or fire in the belly that gives us meaning. Your posts are very responsible even if you do feel down or angry. That says a lot about you. I have always gone with the minimum amount of medication necessary. I am on more now (last 9 months) than I ever have been. I use prn meds rarely but am doing it more to start being kind to myself rather than endure distress. I have posted about my reservations about medication before. It is good to talk, be informed and work with your psychiatrist to maintain the best situation.

Take care

Re: Stopping medication

Can I ask @Former-Member how long you have been on the meds and for what MI diagnosis. The reason I ask is that sometimes a higger dose is needed before a change can occur.
Depending on the MI diagnosis, sometimes even a chage of medication may be needed. Itcan be very ffrustrating not getting the right dose or the right meds first time around. Talk to your Dr & explain your reasonings and any fears you have. Then hear what the Dr has to say.
Good luck

Re: Stopping medication

10 months of medication.

Problem is, that I don't feel they are helping. I still have major lows and I am feeling more isolated and disconnected than ever in my life. I have no energy. I still "leave the room" during therapy, I still can sit there for 60min staring angrily at my psych. My focus and goals have evaporated. I personnally think my mental health has deteriorated since starting the meds. I've gone from bouncy ball to flubber toy in 10 months.

I am just so angry.

Re: Stopping medication

I'm sorry that your health has deteriorated in the past 10 months @Former-Member. I can imagine how hard that must be.
Being isolated can feed our depression and make us so much worse. And I know it's hard to find that right balance, if you don't want to be ariund others.
I truly wish there was something that I coukd say to help you.
Are you able to write down your feelings? Maybe you coukd show that to your psychiatrist.
Whatever you decide, I hope this weekend is peaceful for you.
