Whether you have a pet that makes a huge difference to your wellbeing or you have the pleasure of connecting with animals in wildlife on walks or nearby you! There are lots of ways animals impact our mental health and we have decided to do a whole Topic Tuesday dedicated to talking about just that! We may even share some funny animal memes??! Come along and get involved.

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

What time does this event start in my timezone?

  • AEDT- 7pm
  • AEST- 6pm
  • ACDT- 6:30pm
  • ACST- 5:30pm
  • WST- 4pm

Also welcome @Scoo sorry I missed you earlier! Great to have you along and sounds like your cat is really an important part of your life and that she has stolen your heart after a history of dogs! So sweet

Yes @Former-Member It can be grounding to have pets, although also a source of stress (fear of losing them etc).

Jelly cat often comes up the driveway to greet me, when I drive in from work - really lovely.

My Cockatiels (Weeros) & some of my canaries - come right up to the wire (of aviary or cage) to say hello, as I look in.

They're not afraid, they know I'm safe (not a predator).

Unfortunately my canaries lack of fear & inquisitiveness - has lead to some zipping out the aviary door (when I'm in there), & being gone for good.

It's making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking of all the animal love around the forum ❤ I would tag everyone here but am also having trouble remembering everyone here now too @frog!

So cool to hear of lizards, goats, alpacas, birds, cats, dogs, fish... awesome

I think thats a very valid point @frog and @CheerBear around animals helping to be circuit breakers and also reminding us of stillness.

I love the entertaining factors too- sometimes if animals aren't around it can even be soothing to watch a cute or funny animal video!

What a cool story @cutiepiekitty about your pet lizards! Having any kind of pet or animal around when we are growing up can also really help us feel that sense of companionship.

Love alpacas too!

My cats have been doing double time lately with all I have had going on. At the moment I am lying in bed with them both trying to get under my chin. They try to help me on my worst days

@Adge that's something else - the sense of trust and safety that some animals can have in us! It's taken so long for my Mouse cat (the scaredy cat) to trust me enough to let me touch her, sit on me, sleep with me etc. The reward for patience and persistence with her has been huge. It's a great feeling

Hi @Maggie and welcome!

Loving all the great vibes of animals in here and I dare say there are a lot of them following this discussion along at home (or maybe trying to get involved or get your attention too haha)

@Adge I love that your birds come up to you and I am sorry to hear that sometimes they do fly away- that would be tough too.

The reward of earning trust is a good point too @CheerBear
