Misdiagnosis?

Misdiagnosis?

Hi, I'm wondering if you can have a misdiagnosis that has lasted for the past 7 years? I've been heavily medicated on my script and recently with advice from my psychiatrist I've reduced my meds by a third. Unknown to my psychiatrist though is that for the past week I've reduced it to 1/5 of my original dose as I enjoy being more alert and awake throughout the day. It's for schyzoaffective disorder. I'm still taking my antidepressants as per normal. Any ideas about this as I've had nothing but positive results.

Re: Misdiagnosis?

@Alacarte @Bunniekins hello sorry I am so late to reply it is a busy time of year.

It is completely possible to be misdiagnosed with a mental illness, especially with illness like schizoaffective disorder as it actually requires multiple episodes to be able to be diagnosed so if your diagnosis came from a one off with a psychiatrist you didn’t see often then it is often a good idea to get a second opinion. @Alacarte You also mentioned alcohol was a large problem for you. Alcohol use can lead to many things including brain damage and it is not really possible to get a reliable diagnosis when drugs and alcohol are regularly on board as they can be the cause of many symptoms.

I have had a huge improvement OFF meds. While it has taken a huge amount of effort and work on my part I wouldn’t go back on them being on them is one of my biggest regrets. Of course be safe but if you are doing and feeling better off meds then there is nothing wrong with not being on them meds aren’t for everyone.

Re: Misdiagnosis?

@Eden1919 hi eden. I'm off meds since last night and have felt a bit off all day. I think I'll take a bit longer than a week period to wean off them. Back on them at the lower dose tonight. How did you go about it. If I was on 2 mg a day then I am now on .4 mg. Quite a drop and I may have been a little optimistic to go so quickly and not have any last night. Did you space it out over more of a time period?
