Topic Tuesday // Managing expectations during The Holidays // Tues 10th Dec, 7pm AEDT

For our final online event of the year @Former-Member as well as the LE and Carer communities, will be discussing one of the most common challenges throughout the holiday period!

Expectations

We will be strategising some different approaches to this time of year including realistic expectation setting, maintaining perspective and executing on self-care.
Look forwarding to seeing you all there

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

What time does this event start in my timezone?

  • AEDT- 7pm
  • AEST- 6pm
  • ACDT- 6:30pm
  • ACST- 5:30pm
  • WST- 4pm

What are some ways that we can minimise the pressure we put on ourselves during the holiday period?

Ignoring other people's expectations ..

. adding some humour helps.

reminding ourselves that we cannot please everyone around us

to be happy and content with our plans

Very true, it's impossible to please everyone. I think this is a bit of a key mantra for the coming holidays actually @Adge Thank you so much.

@Shaz51I agree with Mr Shaz, medication!

I will be relying on it to get through the holiday period.

I will be spending it with my family and husbands family. I don't want to but it is what is needed to be done. I especially find my family a big trigger.

I will put on my mask and pretend that nothing is wrong. It really is exhausting.

I know people will think "at least I have someone to spend it with" but I would rather go into hiding.

I do it for my kids sake. They should enjoy this time.

Alright crew - thank you so much for these responses, really incredible work.

Second last question

It can be easy during this busy period, to start to feel some underlying stress or anxiety. What are some techniques we can use when we notice ourselves feeling stressed around the holidays?

Scheduling in some time out from family ... getting in a siesta of needed ... being intentional about being kind to our inlaws as an act of love to our partners (or as I call them ... the outlaws).

Yes absolutely! How does it look scheduling time away from the fam? What are some strategies there? I am a fan of the frequent walk around the block 🙂 @Former-Member
