My music playlist - psychoanalysis?

My music playlist - psychoanalysis?

Hi.

This started when my friend was over and playing music, and loaded my main playlist.

She knew i hadn't been in a recent relationship, and she called out "who died?".

I said 'what?'

She said 'Your playlist, you must have lost someone, did someone die?'

Eventually i could only say, 'yeah . . . me.'.

She laughed.

But I didn't, cos i realised it meant it.

So i showed the list to a diff friend. She said god that's depressing.

But i find it comforting. It fills a hole.

But now i'm worried it might be depressing me, or indulgent self pity or something.

I never really thought past the fact that I just like the songs, before...

i don't think it was an issue with the artitsts, as they al sing a variety of styles.

but almost all those songs are about loss and breakup though, which i hadn't really realised before, and now i see it, wonder why, because i havent lost anyone.

except my life, and future. my dreams, myself .etc...

(P.S.) don't get me wrong, this isn't my only listening choice.

I'm currently enjoying the band 'Collide' , Jack White and a lot of Sia's older albumns.

but that sad list is my 'go to' list, especially when i'm depressed.

I figure sometimes we choose to listen to music that resonates with us, that reflects our own feelings, as a way of going 'I'm not alone in this'. The trick is not to let it turn into wallowing.

The only artists I recognised @Former-Memberwas Crowded House, Bob Dylan & Nick Cave.

Some of us need more sad music .. I like Leonard Cohen .. too .. but mostly classical, world, blues and jazz

If you have up music thats great too ... I use it sometimes to get things done

Mostly what I think is to DO music ... at any level ... of any kind ... any instrument .. drums voice whatever

But some people dont know how to get started ... Good Luck

I find what I listen to follows my mood. A lot of EDM/pop when elevated and stuff similar to yours when I'm low. There's a thread on music floating around here somewhere maybe you would like to take a look?

Good choice on Ellie Goulding. Huge fan. Really good technically (especially rhythm).

Hi @Former-Member,

Our emotions tend to go where our thinking points us.

Years ago in my 20's when I first was getting off drugs and alcohol, before I knew i lived with myriad MI, I had a walkman (LOL! How old am I?) I was deeply lonely, longing for relationship and grieving the loss of the myriad lovers and friends I had lost along the way. So I listened incessantly to love-lost, heartbreak and dwelling on loss music.

A wise friend (my first mentor in a 12 step programme) said to me when she asked what I was listening to all the time and I shared the music with her said to me, this is not helping yourSELF, I want you to try something...
I want you to listen to different music for two whole weeks, put this music 'in the glass'; that's a saying that means "put it down and don't pick it up like your life depended on it." She said "Listen only to music that speaks to hope, and energy and life. Then come back to me and tell me how you are feeling."

I did that and the change in my thinking and outlook was undeniably positive.

So, as you have "had the thought'" that this playlist, and your friend also confimmed that this playlist might well be contributing to darkness and down-ness - why don't you set yourself a test/trial to see if this music is harming you?

As familiar and resonant as it is as it 'matches your mood'. But what comes first - the mood or the music?
Is the music enveloping you in mood?

Create a playlist with 62 new bits of music/songs - make a new playlist (or buy or download new songs) by artists you like that have threads of hope in them. Listen to ONLY those songs for the next fortnight and then analyse if you are feeling any less oppressed and darkness validated over and over.... by your own mood/thinking.

What goes in, comes out.

I feel like an utter Nanna here because apart from ONE song which is a Rolling Stones cover I have no clue about any of these songs or who the artists are. Still, I do know the experience and it is universal....

I think people like to think of it as depressing when in reality it shows that you need something relatable or just something that speaks to you, happy music doesn't...............well it just doesn't translate it is more likely to make a person feel worse due to the fact that the song is happy it's not relateable and you can't feel it. I got many similar playlists with some of the same songs
