A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Dear @eth

I actually had that very conversation this morning with my psychiatrist about learning my limitations in some aspects of my life ...as in yes standing up for myself...also accepting that I cannot take on the whole world...have taken issues to the nth degree over years...currently dealing with higher management with previous work and also another large corporation..

the other side is recognising when not to set limitations on self....

quite a difference in the two areas ....am making headway...

lovely that you connect so well with what I am saying at times...

as does @Mazarita I can relate to the dreams and talking out loud at times of huge stress in my life...also medication adaptations...changes...

not 3 different dreams over the span of 12 hours....are you waking up then drifting off and a new dream commencing? ...would definitely mention that with your specialist to keep an eye on..a good idea to note every symptom that you notice as different with date and time...this tells a story and your specialist has all the facts...this I know that you would already know..

I am a listmaker!! a note taker...I write write write....pen and paper...

still have not had scan...quite an ordeal with drinking a litre of water and whole scenario over 2 hours...body clock upset before causing domino affect...unable to walk and be active ...dominoes....so now booked for a week tuesday...

yeah for the pool tomorrow!

Hi @eth, @Sophia1 and anyone here.

I've been at my friends place all afternoon, had dinner, watched tv (the gruen transfer), funny and interesting on her brothers big tv.

Finally in bed after midnight, on mobile. Tired but don't feel like sleeping yet after a good day.

Eth, I understand how your journey over the past long time might make writing difficult. It will flow again when you are ready.

Now I'm really sleepy.

Good night. And good morning for after sunrise.

Re: A long rave

Well, now it's 2.15am. Tried to sleep earlier but was basically lying there in pitch dark with wired tense muscles I couldn't relax (and still can't). Brain going too fast from thought to next random thought. Anxious about boogy scary nothings. Breathing exercises just not cutting it to ease this.

So up I got for some weetbix and a smoke. Outside. In the dark. Quick half smoke and back inside, lock the door.

Slightly less uptight sitting up in bed with the bedside lamp on, writing here. But this will come to an end unless @outlander or @Faith-and-Hope happen to still be around and wanting to chat.

I think I'll post this and see if anyone replies just now.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @TAB @Sophia1@Bunniekins @outlander @Faith-and-Hope @Appleblossom @Former-Member @utopia @Teej @CheerBear @Shaz51 and any one else who's around this morning. Cold and windy here brrrr. Hoping today gets off to a good start and things go according to plan for you all.

I'm now the owner of a new iphone 7 having only ever had android phones in the past. Things went well in the shop with my old provider releasing my no. quickly so I can keep it the same, and all my contacts being transferred successfully (and message history and photos as it turns out). I got a case and a screen protector for $20 off the normal price and a $10 a month discount on the plan fee. But it's still going to cost $20 a month more than I've been paying. Being on the DSP and already paying for non-PBS meds and $75 a fortnight more for the psychologist due to a different type of referral my budget is going to be very tight indeed. But bro says to look on it as only $5 a week more for a much better set-up - which is true. It's important to bro and sil that I have tech that can sync. with theirs and also much better signal coverage with the new larger provider. So I'm not whinging really. Just hoping I can get enough skills on it this morning as bro and sil leave this afternoon until sun evening.

I see you were up through the night @Mazarita I had 6 short sleeps since 9.30 last night, none more than 2 hours. With stress high, hearing week after next and travel planning I have to monitor myself closely due to potential hypomania triggers. Hope you are snug as a bug now and get some refreshing rest before you start your day. Yesterday sounds good.

@TAB probably everyone was off-line (and most sleeping) 4 hours ago. Doesn't mean people didn't want to talk to you. I hope you're sleeping too.

Hope you make it to the pool @Sophia1.

Thanks for thinking of me @Bunniekins Things are somewhat challenging at the moment and I feel like I'm just barely keeping up with stuff.

Actually looking forward to some alone time this w/e. No doubt I'll be around here a fair bit.

Peace to all xx

Morning to all the ravers @Mazarita@TAB@outlander@Sophia1@CheerBear@eth Hi eth a nice quiet weekend maybe just the ticket for you this weekend. Cold here today too I have 3 layers on!!! and one of my thneed scarfs 🙂 Will be raining here so they say this weekend .... I hope so then I can snuggle back in bed as my ex will have my son this weekend. I have a fancy iphone which I use for basic things which is fine. I figure I am an old lady and dont really care about knowing how the whole thing works. As long as I can do the basics on it I am happy.

So thinking of you with the hearing .... so hope it goes well for you. At least you will be able to say you tried everything and didnt give up.

@TAB We are always here for you TAB just sometimes the timing might be out of wack. Never think we are ignoring you 🙂

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins I've got on 4 layers and a beanie! I'm looking forward to a couple of sleep-ins too. I think it's great that you and your ex have things worked out with your son's care so that you get regular respite. Do you have anything planned for today?
